If the clot become dislodged, the nerves and bone underneath can become exposed, leading to delayed healing and potentially a dry socket.

What Foods To Eat After Wisdom Teeth Removal Oral Surgery Or Tooth Extraction & How To Recover Quickly

Those of you who have been following my health journey know that 2020 was a whirlwind year of dental issues that culminated in having a molar extracted.

It had been almost a decade since I had my wisdom teeth removed, and I had either forgotten or blacked out what the aftermath was like. Like a fool, I had a full week of meetings and interviews scheduled for my book, not realizing that I would look like a chipmunk and barely be able to open my mouth for 24 hours.

My oral surgeon of course sent me home with a one pager on how to care for my mouth and what not to eat in the days and weeks that followed. But having lived through it in the real world, I thought I could put the instructions into more useful terms with recipes and meal plan guidance.

More importantly, the food suggestions left a lot to be desired from a nutrition, not to mention, a pleasure standpoint. Below Ive put together some liquid foods that will fit the bill in the early days following wisdom teeth removal and some softer things that you can transition to as you heal.

It took me 4 or 5 days before I was able to eat a real meal with solid foods that werent pureed. But moreover, I stuck with mostly soft foods for a total of two weeks, which meant I needed quite a few ideas in my arsenal.

Read on for my best tips for what to eat after wisdom teeth removal and what foods will limit inflammation and keep your wounds happy.

Why Is Protein Important

Keeping it Real with Joy

Because you wont be able to eat many whole foods while your mouth heals, its a good idea to choose foods that are high in protein and other nutrients. Protein aids recovery, and plays an important role in rebuilding healthy new tissue.

When it comes to choosing foods that are protein-rich, yoghurt is a great option. Besides its high protein content, its also full of calcium. The texture also makes it easy to consume while your mouth still feels tender.

Another great source of protein is scrambled eggs, which are easy to chew, especially as your mouth starts to heal. If you feel ready to start eating more solid foods, try a soft fish like cooked salmon, which is generally easy to chew and swallow with minimal effort.

Ice Cream And Milkshakes

Ice cream might not be something you usually eat, because its high in sugar and calories, but hey, you just had to undergo surgery, so its OK to treat yourself a little bit. Plus, ice cream is an ideal post-tooth extraction snack, since its soft and easy to eat without chewing. Just make sure you skip the ice cream cone.

A milkshake can also be a good treat after your wisdom teeth are taken out, with one big caveat. Youll need to skip the straw. Sucking on a straw creates pressure in your mouth, which can cause the blood clot in the surgical area to come loose, leading to a dry socket. At Gallardo , the use of growth factors is part of every surgical procedure that is done, including removal of wisdom teeth which reduces the chances of dry socket.

If youve been scheduled for wisdom teeth extraction, you may be wondering how youre supposed to go about eating and drinking after surgery. The wisdom teeth are close to nerves that can be injured during removal. An injury may lead to paresthesia, which refers to the numbing of the lower jaw, lip, and tongue.

The risk of permanent numbing is very low. However, a person may experience temporary numbing for several weeks or months, which can make eating and drinking difficult.

If the numbness lasts for longer than a few months, it is important to contact the dentist or surgeon.

How To Eat After Wisdom Teeth Removal

In addition to knowing what foods to eat and when to eat them, you also need to know how to eat after wisdom teeth removal. The empty sockets left behind after the extraction will need a few days to form blood clots so they can heal properly.

When eating, make sure to chew away from the extraction site so you dont disrupt the healing process. Its also important to avoid warm or hot foods and liquids for the first few days after your surgery, because heat can also impact healing.

You need to stick to a soft food diet for as many days as your oral surgeon recommends. Eating hard, sticky, and crunchy foods too soon can prevent blood clots from forming, or pull a blood clot out of the socket. This leads to a condition called dry socket, which can cause significant pain and will require further treatment from your oral surgeon.
