Bean And Bacon Soup Recipe With Simple All

Bean and Bacon soup Ahhh, nostalgia at its finest. Campbells® Bean with Bacon Soup was a staple in my diet for many, many years. I was able to recreate this soup with simple all-natural ingredients, less sodium, and packed with bacon.

Packed with bacon? Sounds like heaven, right?

There are a few conclusions Ive come to in my cooking escapades, one being that bacon will always make something one billion times better. This bean and bacon soup is no different, packed with bacon and the flavorful bacon juices that send me right into childhood bean and bacon heaven.

All you need are 6 simple, natural ingredients and in as little as 2 hours you can have a protein packed, delicious, warm hearty soup.

Were taking another break from the dessert train this week. Lately Ive been on a roll with cookies chocolate peanut butter cookies and healthy chocolate chip cookies have pretty much been a necessity as I pull together my cookbook. Join me as we switch tracks from the dessert train to take a ride on the nostalgia train.

Im going to tell you my deep dark secret when it comes to this canned soup. Campbells® Bean with Bacon Soup and I go way back. Back in the days I would go as far as opening the can and spooning out spoonfuls of the beans-with-bacon-orange-ish-sludge that would miraculously turn into soup after adding water. Who had time to add water? Well, I did, but chose not to. That highly concentrated bean and bacon stuff was my favorite growing up.

How To Make This Recipe Your Own

  • Make it in your slow cooker with dry great Northern beans. Rinse the beans well, and brown the bacon, then add everything to your crockpot. Cook on low 8 to 9 hours, or on high four to five hours, or until beans are tender.
  • Use a different type of bean. Red beans, white beans, pinto beans, or black beans all work well.
  • Replace the bacon with diced ham. You wont need to brown it.
  • Vegetarian? Omit the bacon and sauté the veggies in olive oil instead. Add a teaspoon or two of smoked paprika, if desired.

How To Make Bean Soup In A Dutch Oven

Campbell

When I first developed this recipe I made the soup in my Dutch Oven. I like the Dutch Oven because of the way it distributes heat and how it will keep the soup warm for serving.

I pre-soak the beans before cooking the soup to help it cook faster. Still it will take about 2 ½ to 3 hours. You bring the soup to a boil and reduce to simmer with the lid on for that time.

How To Make This Soup

Begin this easy soup by browning thick cut bacon slices until crisp. Remove the bacon and most of the grease and in the same pan sauté carrots, onions, and celery until they soften a bit. Add garlic and a couple tablespoons of tomato paste, and cook, stirring a minute more.

Add broth, beans, bay leaves, and thyme and simmer the soup. Put half of the bacon back in, too. Reserve some bacon for garnishing the soup, or just put it all in, totally up to you.

When the beans are tender and the soup is done, remove about half of it and puree it with a stick blender. Stir the pureed soup back into the pan. This step is optional but it does add a nice creamy texture to the soup. Truthfully, youll love it either way! If you dont want to blend the soup, just mash some of it against the side of the pan with a large spoon. Mission accomplished.

Serve bean and bacon soup in a soup bowl or mug, steaming hot, with crackers or bread. Its pure comfort food, especially on a cold day.

How To Make Bean With Bacon Soup Like Campbell’s

The soup is pretty easy to make. The ingredients is what makes it special, and a little bit of technique.

For the soup to be mmm mmm great…

  • Use dried, not canned
  • Puree some of the soup after cooking
  • Eat it leftover!

Seriously about the leftover thing, the soup is actually better the next day, as it will thicken when chilled and still be thick when you re-heat it.

There are a few different ways you can make this soup. I am going to address three of those – slow cooker, dutch oven, or Instant Pot.

Cook The Carrots Separately

Campbell’s Bean with Bacon Soup (1994 Commercial)

Same thing applies to the carrots. Unless you don’t mind your carrots being super soft, I like to chop the carrots and cook them in a pan with a little oil. This caramelizes the carrots giving them incredible flavor.

I like to use different colors of carrots, that each have a different flavor. They also make the soup look prettier!

Add them to the finished beans after the 8th step.

Quick Note: I updated this post on 12-October-2019 to fix how the recipe was posted. It originally used a combination of canned & dried beans which was confusing. Since the original publication of this post, I switched to using only dried navy beans because I found a good source of inexpensive bulk beans. I buy them here: . When I bought them the last time, it came out to roughly $0.70 per lb. of beans. Walmart and other stores charge approx. $1.14 $1.49 for 1 lb. of dried beans. Amounts and cook times have been updated.

One of my fondest childhood memories involved Campbells Bean with Bacon or Campbells Chicken Noodle soup. You can check out my great non-Campbells Chicken Noodle soup recipe later. But this post is all about the Bean with Bacon soup!

Ive always loved Campbells Bean with Bacon soup but I have to share something with you I really dont like HATE bean soup. For me, there is a big difference uhh, taste, hello one is yummy and all the others are truly gross! My Mom used to make bean soup and I have to admit I tried to run away from home before she could serve it. I love you Mom!!

Any time I needed a good dose of quick and easy comfort food, Id open a can of the Campbells I had stashed away and it was like being wrapped up in a warm, cozy blanket by a crackling fire.

So lets get started! Gather all of your ingredients together.

Peel and chop up your onions and carrots. Chop up your ham.

Cook The Bacon Separately

While it may be tempting to just throw everything into the pot at once, I choose to cook the bacon separate and add it when the soup is done. The way you are getting the best flavor out of the bacon.

I cut the bacon in half and place it into a non-stick pan. Cook it over medium heat so that it cooks more evenly and doesn’t burn in spots.

Once cooled, cut/chop into pieces and add to the finished beans after step 8.

How To Make Bean Soup In The Instant Pot

Campbell

The newest way I have made the soup and now my go-to method is with my Instant Pot. What I like about this is speed. 35 minutes of cook time is all you need to cook the beans to the perfect doneness for the soup .

No soaking again needed with this method and I can tell you then it came out wonderful this way. The best batch I ever made was with the Instant Pot.

What You Need

  • Bacon: We love a thick, center-cut bacon for the most amount of meat with the least amount of fat. Ham will also work, and you wont need to brown it first.
  • Great Northern Beans: Cooking time will increase if you use dry beans , and youll have to plan ahead and soak them overnight. We love the texture and flavor that comes with dried beans, but canned beans also make a great soup and turn this recipe into a perfect weeknight meal, ready in 40 minutes.
  • Vegetables: Onion, celery, carrots, and some tomato paste give this soup so much flavor and provide added nutritional value.
  • Flavor: Flavor is added to this soup with fresh garlic, bay leaves, and thyme. It tastes so similar to the store-bought version!
  • Chicken Broth: We always recommend using a salt-free or low-salt chicken broth so that you can control the salt in your final recipe. Bonus points for making homemade chicken broth. You could also use a bone broth.
