Why Are Swedish Meatballs Called Swedish Meatballs

Swedish meatballs were long thought to have originated in Sweden, but turns out they might actually have been created in Turkey originally! Its not really the meatballs that set the dish apart from other types of meatballs, but the sauce. Swedish meatballs are served in a rich and creamy gravy instead of tomato sauce like Italian meatballs. So, the meatballs on their own are just meatballs add the gravy and then you can call them Swedish Meatballs!

My grandmother was actually from Sweden, so I have a great basis for her own Swedish Meatball Recipe, and I remember fondly sitting in her kitchen eating them. Today, I swapped out her homemade meatballs and made a copycat version using frozen meatballs. Easy and delicious. But if you want a great homemade Swedish meatball, feel free to replace them.

The directions are easy, and the ingredients you can purchase ahead of time and put in your pantry for a quick and easy meal when you have no idea what to make for dinner that night! I love those meals. So, much better than the drive-thru.

Tips And Helpful Hints For Making Swedish Meatballs

  • This is not one of those slow cooker recipes that can be cooking all day long and kept on the warm setting for a couple of hours. I have found that once you add the evaporated milk be ready to eat it soon after. The longer the meatballs sit in the slow cooker, the thicker the sauce gets, and you won’t have the super smooth silky gravy sauce like you did before.
  • I think it’s best to use evaporated milk because it makes the sauce so smooth! I tried using sour cream, which is the normal ingredient in Swedish meatballs, but I found that it takes forever for it to mix into the sauce and when it does you end up with these small white chunks of sour cream in your sauce. I prefer a smooth gravy sauce which is why I think it’s best to use evaporated milk.
  • Can I Substitute The Cream Of Mushroom Soup

  • I know not everyone loves this ingredient and I will be honest and say that this is the only recipe on my site that uses this ingredient. With that said, I don’t even like mushrooms but I love this ingredient in this meatball recipe. You could try making homemade cream of mushroom soup or try using a different creamed soup like cream of celery or cream of onion. It will probably change the flavor slightly so I can’t say for sure what the results would be if you used a different creamed soup.

The sauce to put your Swedish Meatballs in is so easy! Youre mixing together simple ingredients like cream of mushroom soup, beef broth, and salt and pepper to create the perfect Swedish Meatball gravy. The recipe is a simple and tasty one that anyone in your family can appreciate and best of all, you can either make it all and reheat leftovers for the next day or you could make half of the meatballs and save the rest for another meal the following week.

So you start by mixing together your meatball mixture: 2 lbs ground beef, 1/2 cup bread crumbs, and one can of Campbells rice and chicken soup. You can also add onion, salt, and pepper to your seasoning at your discretion. My family doesnt like onions, so I left them out of mine. After its completely mixed, I rounded it into small balls and set on a cookie sheet and then I bake for 20 minutes at 350 degrees. You can also decide to freeze your mixture at this point and save for later in the week.
