Ingredients For Creamy Tomato Soup:

  • Tomatoes This recipe calls for canned whole peeled plum tomatoes but fresh will work too. Be sure to prep them by peeling and coring.
  • Onion I love cooking with sweet onion which is especially good in this soup.
  • Garlic A must have when cooking with tomatoes!
  • Tomato Juice This can be found in a can next to the tomatoes or in bottles in the juice aisle. I like to use regular V8 tomato juice.
  • Chicken stock Use stock or water with bouillon.
  • Brown Sugar This helps to cut the acidity of the tomatoes.
  • Baking Soda Since tomatoes have a lot of acid, adding baking soda, a base, helps to neutralize the acidity.
  • Heavy Whipping Cream Makes the soup delicious and creamy. For a lower fat option, use half-and-half or fat-free half-and-half.
  • Butter Makes the soup creamy, velvety, and neutralizes the acidic tomatoes.
  • Basil Fresh basil leaves are best. They can either be pureed up in the soup or served on top and stirred in.
  • Parmesan Parmigiano Reggiano is the best quality parmesan. Use a vegetable peeler to create thin shaved pieces.

After Cooking The Soup For A Few Minutes It Was Piping Hot

Campbell

The color of the soup was the same nostalgic orange-red shade I remembered from my youth. The consistency was odd it was simultaneously watery and clumpy.

As the soup was cooking, I had attempted to use a whisk to completely combine the condensed soup and the water, but nevertheless found tiny clumps of tomato paste floating in my soup.

Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup

When you think of chicken noodle soup, we’re sure you think of this red and white can first. However, in our taste test, the iconic Campbell’s can placed fifth. It might seem tough to beat, but we found four surprising picks that really stood above this classic.

Eat This, Not That! Verdict

This one will always be a classic. One editor said, though, that it was “a little too salty now that we tasted it next to the others.” And another said “the salt was unbearable in this soup. Also, the lack of veggies was disappointing.”

A third person also said this soup was “so salty. Did not like the chicken in this one.” However, it received high ratings for nostalgia. It reminded some of their childhood, but others thought that the “only good part of this soup was the can.”

Still, the original Campbell’s soup had that classic taste, which led one editor to reminisce about their “childhood memories drinking this after a snow day.” They added that Campbell’s was a “go-to” when they were sick, saying you “can’t beat it” for the nostalgia factor alone.

Full Circle Market Organic Chicken Noodle Soup

Food Review: Campbells Well Yes Soup

Initially, we were excited about this soup because its noodle shape was so unique in comparison to the others, and the vibrant colors of the carrots were appealing. Unfortunately, the taste of this soup landed it near the bottom of our list. We might’ve loved the noodles, but that was it. Sometimes, things look better than they tasteand that was definitely the case here.

Eat This, Not That! Verdict

“The noodles? Fantastic. But the broth tasted like the cardboard box it came out of,” one editor said. Another thought it “tasted more like carrot noodle soup than chicken noodle. Very blah.”

One editor “liked the noodles, but sadly, the taste and flavor were severely lacking.” “Where was the chicken?” another taste-tester asked. Apparently, they got spoonfuls of only carrots and noodles.

“The noodles were fun, but that’s the only redeeming quality. The taste was nonexistent,” another individual said.

Annies Organic Chicken Noodle Soup

Sure, Annies Organic Chicken Noodle Soup stands miles above the lackluster and frankly disappointing Campbells options weve covered thus far but it still doesnt even make it to the middle of our list. Thats because, for all that Annies Organic Chicken Noodle Soup offers, it does so at a terrible price point.

This soup features egg noodles, chicken chunks, carrots, and celery. In terms of ingredient quality and ingredient-to-broth ratio, Annies clearly wins over the previous soups versus just garlic and onion, Annies infuses its broth with flavors from herbs and spices such as rosemary, sage, and thyme. The sodium content is slightly less than what youll get with the above soups as well .

However, Annies soup is much more expensive than some of the other soups that rank higher on our list and that offer comparable flavors. At the time of writing, an eight-pack of Annies Organic Chicken Noodle Soup was $30.89 on . Comparatively, you can get a 12-pack of Campbells Well Yes! Chicken Noodle Soup, which ranks at the very top of our list, for just $23 on .

Pacific Chicken Noodle Soup With Chicken Bone Broth

This boxed soup wasn’t so bad, but it wasn’t good enough to make the top half of the list. The variety of vegetables in the mix looked great, but the overall taste kept this soup from being one of the most enjoyed of the batch.

Eat This, Not That! Verdict

One taste-tester said, “This was reminiscent of chicken noodle soup but without any actual flavor.” Another said something similar: “I liked the pasta, but the broth was pretty bland.”

According to our team, the look of this soup was “very natural.” But one taster thought the soup from this box had a “metal aftertaste.” They wrote the soup left a bad taste in their mouth after trying the sampleand they weren’t alone.

“Whatever the box was made of was coming off into the soup,” they said. “I didn’t like this at all.”

Still, this soup did get some positive reviews from some of our tasters. One person noted they “loved the shape of the noodles, and the carrots provided a nice hearty flavor.” Another enjoyed the soup, writing they liked “the bone broth in here, and it tasted low in sodium. The texture of this noodle was also lovely.”

How To Make Chilled Creamy Tomato Basil Soup

Begin with the garlic. Place each clove underneath the flat side of a chefs knife and smash it with the palm of your hand the peel will come right off. You dont want to chop the garlic because it will burn if the pieces are too small.

Next, roughly chop the onions and carrots.

Cook the onions, garlic and carrots in olive oil until softened and just starting to brown, about 15 minutes.

Add the tomatoes, water, orange juice, sugar and salt.

Toss in some fresh basil leaves.

Then cover and simmer for about 25 minutes.

Purée the soup using a hand-held immersion blender until completely smooth.

Stir in the cream. Dont worry theres only a third of a cup in the whole pot. A little goes a very long way!

Finally, chill the soup in the refrigerator until very cold. Ladle the soup into bowls and top with fresh chopped basil, or garnish with whole basil leaves if desired. Enjoy!

Healthy Canned Soup Options

Campbell

These healthy canned soup options are not all in cans. I can be accused of false advertising but I felt I had no choice.

The world of canned soup has changed since I last took a look in 2011. Ten years is a long time in the food world and it was time to do a new review since the landscape had altered.

One of the big changes is that now there is soup in cans, jars, and plastic bags which I think is a good thing. Many canned soups taste like the can which is why I make my own Healthy Soup Recipes.

Sometimes, you dont have time to cook or you are sick to death of chopping vegetables. If it tastes good and it is good for you why not pour it out of a can?

The biggest problem with these soups is the amount of sodium. I would not call these amounts of sodium healthy especially if you have heart disease. Basically, I wouldnt eat these every day or even every other day. I would aim for once per week.

But, other than the sodium you have beans, vegetables, and no bizarro ingredients to turn you off of these options. The only problem is going to be taste.

I am going to go from worst to best in terms of flavor.

Annie’s Organic Chicken Noodle Soup

This organic brand was a dark horse in the race. Normally known for its snacks and mac and cheese, Annie’s surprised our team with a really great and uniquely-flavored chicken noodle soup, landing it a spot in our top three.

Eat This, Not That! Verdict

Editors raved about the “good, hefty chunks of chicken and fresh taste.” One taste-tester said they “loved the savory taste in this soupthe blend of spices was very pleasant,” and added they “would eat a whole bowl of this and feel comfortably full.” One editor thought this soup had the noodles with “the absolute best shape.”

Our only complaint? One person thought this soup “needed salt, but overall had a good healthy and clean aftertaste.” This healthy-tasting soup pleased many of our team members.

Can You Freeze This Tomato Soup Recipe

This recipe makes a whole big pot of soup so if youre not going to use all of it you can freeze it for another meal!

The best way to freeze any sup with dairy is to leave the dairy product out of the last step. If youre using heavy cream the soup will freeze fine but milk is better when added fresh to the recipe.

Once you defrost your soup just heat in a pot until warm, stir in the whole milk and serve!

How To Choose A Healthy Canned Soup

Soups are a wonderful way to get more plant-based foods into your body, like grains and vegetables, says Stoler. Even better, the proteins can be animal- or plant-based, meaning anyone can get in on the quickest, easiest dinner of all time, no matter their dietary preferences.

Stolers rules of thumb for choosing a healthy canned soup are pretty simple. First and foremost, take a look at whats actually in the soup before obsessing over the nutrition facts. My general guidelines include flavor, taste and ingredients, she says. And thats good advicewhy buy a healthier soup youre not going to genuinely enjoy? She also says broth-based soups are just about always a better choice than cream-based ones.

If youre intent on checking out the nutrition label, follow her lead: I like to look at the calories per serving and if theres any fiber in each serving. But before you keep yourself from your favorite creamy clam chowder, ask yourself: How am I going to eat this? One should consider if the soup is meant to be a stand-alone meal or part of a meal. This way calories and macronutrients can be factored into the meal or days calorie budget, says Stoler.
