Chicken Soup for the Soul: Family Matters

For Janet, the book offers an opportunity to share a story about her son and offer comfort to those grieving the loss of a loved one.

My whole goal in writing stories is to help someone see hope through the darkness, she said. If I can help somebody through their grief by offering words of hope, then I should do it.

She tenderly remembers Brian and his vibrant life.

In high school, Brian was involved in the arts, theater and music. He was president of the Thespian troupe at Fremont High School and lauded for his commanding stage presence.

The funny, outgoing young man had many friends.

At 18, he had the world by the tail, his mother said. He was a smart kid. He was a wonderful writer.

Earlier in his life, Brian was diagnosed with high anxiety disorder and was taking medication, which he said helped. He also was on medication for severe migraines.

He had a migraine on the day he died, but spent that evening visiting friends.

Then in the early morning on Sept. 18, 2005, Brian took his own life.

Family and friends were devastated.

Friends would describe Brian as caring and compassionate, something he demonstrated even when selecting fireworks.

He always loved Fourth of July, Janet said. We gave him money and he picked out the fireworks.

The last summer before his death, Brian couldnt find one type of firework that had been a family favorite.

One of Brian Todds favorite holidays was the Fourth of July.

The Fremont teen liked going to fireworks stands to choose the best selections for his familys celebration.

After his death in September 2005, the holiday was very painful for his parents, Tim and Janet.

But something happened in July 2006 that brought them comfort.

This year, she submitted her short story for inclusion in the Chicken Soup for the Soul Miracles and the Unexplainable book. Her story, One Missing, was among those chosen to be part of the book published this month and available for sale.

The new book includes 101 true stories, which it states are designed to prove that miracles happen every day to people from all walks of life.

Get A Great Editor Before You Self

If you are going to spend any money on your project, spend it on editing. That was one of Jack’s biggest pieces of advice. He explained that you could spend a significant amount of time and money on launching and promoting your book, but if the book is not a real page-turner, it will be a big waste. Most authors never get a good editor involved.

Basking In The Kindness Of Strangers

Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Miracle of Love

Hey, its Amy Newmark with your Chicken Soup for the Soul, and today were talking about how the kindness of strangers can turn around a bad day and make into a memorably good one. Ill be sharing two stories from our new bestselling book, Chicken Soup for the Soul: Kindness Matters. I think the lesson I take away from this collection of stories is that if you have an impulse to do something unexpected for a stranger you should just go with it and not overthink it.Learn more about your ad choices. Follow The Rule Of Five

Jack said, “Do five things a day toward the achievement of your breakthrough goal. Our breakthrough goal was to get this book to be a bestseller. It took us 14 months to hit our first bestseller list, The Washington Post. Then it hit the New York Times list. The book slowly climbed up the list but when it got to the top, it stayed there for three years. Twenty-five years later, we’re published in 47 languages. But it was a lot of work. It was a lot of calling up newspaper editors and sending free books out and calling military bases and saying, ‘Do you have this book? Can I send you a copy?'”

Jack continued: “We’d call up multilevel companies and see if they would recommend it to their downlines. We get, ‘No, no, no.’ I’d get hung up on. And then one guy bought a thousand books. Then another person at Discovery Toys bought some books, and then she hired me to be her keynote speaker at a company convention. For every 50 nos, we would get one lucky break.”

Free Media Is The Key

My favorite tip from this chat with Jack came when I asked him, “What would you do differently if you were starting again today?”

Jack said that he would take advantage of all the free media that is out there today. Podcasts are one of the top choices for consumption in media, so get yourself on as many podcasts as you can. Search Google for podcast show hosts. There are millions of them and they are all looking for more guests.

Jack also suggested looking for influencers on YouTube, Instagram and Facebook. Offer to be on a live video with them. If you push these free media options hard enough, it could take you to a bestseller list.

When Do You Think Someone Is Sent An Angel

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Stories of Faith

Siweck says that throughout the Bible, God sent important messages to Earth via angels.

“He said he sent an angel to announce the birth of his son and he sent a Prophet to David to tell him that he was living in sin,” she said. “He did all kinds of things throughout the Bible to get peoples attention.”

She believes that God will send a message or angel to someone when they need it.

“I just think that hes God and if he thinks you need an angel, I think he would send one. He would do whatever he thinks that you need. Ultimately it is up to him how he wants to solve your problem, or how he wants to speak to you, or get your attention, or help you,” Siweck said. “Whatever the situation calls for. And maybe he felt like I was going to share this story so that I could have this experience. I dont know but I just feel like hell do whatever he needs to do to take care of his children, I really do.

Religion has played a huge part in Siweck’s life. She said she felt “very honored” that God sent her an angel.

“After the death of my husband I had so many experiences that were just unexplainable,” she said. “But every time I was really needing something, I got the answer.”

Ask Yourself Who You Want To Help

Jack explained that he rarely thought about the money that he would make, in the early days. He focussed all of his attention on the people that his books could help. The journey to becoming a bestselling author is not easy. It’s that focus on the people that your book will help that will keep you going!

Jack told me: “I always wanted to be wealthy. I mean, who doesn’t? But I never set out to make money. That wasn’t my top goal. My goal was to make a difference. I’ve always been someone who loved to learn, so if I can learn something and turn around and teach it to someone else, I’m really happy.”

What Made You Decide To Write About Your Experience

Siweck’s daughter found out that Chicken Soup had a call out for stories about angels.

She called me on the phone and said, Mom have you ever thought about writing a story about that angel visitation you thought you had? and I said, Well no,” Siweck said. “And she said, Well Chicken Soup has a call out so why dont you write your story up and Ill send it in for you? Which she did. We got it sent off almost at the last minute so I felt really honored then when I found out they had a thousand stories sent in and they still picked mine.

Siweck has been writing for over 20 years. She said being featured in this book was “quite an opportunity.” Hers was chosen amid thousands of entries.

“They told me when they called me, Congratulations youre one of the very few that have made it this far,” Siweck said. “And I didnt realize how much of a very few I was until I found out how many stories they have submitted. But I just felt honored that I could share that story.

This is not her first time being published or even her first time being published in Chicken Soup for the Soul. Her first story was published in 2008 and featured in “Chicken Soup for the Grandma’s Soul: Stories to honor and celebrate the ageless love of Grandmothers.” But she hopes to publish more.

How Did Your Encounter With The Angel Go

    Gracie’s Choice | Official FULL MOVIE | 2004 | Kristen Bell | Drama

Siweck’s angel encounter happened one night she was experiencing a wave of grief.

After she got dressed up and went to church choir, Siweck and her friend got coffee. She confided in her friend about how she was feeling, and how she specifically missed being complimented by her husband.

Just as they were leaving to go home a woman came directly up to them in the parking lot and said, “I just came to tell you that you look really nice tonight” and disappeared into the night.

At first, Siweck wasn’t sure it was an angel.

But it was the hat that really threw me. And when I looked down and saw her legs I swore they were my husbands legs. He had very hairy legs. But the hat it was kind of like a pillbox hat, the kind that Jackie Kennedy wouldve worn I think it was mauve color if I recall,” Siweck said. “She was kind of dressed in navy blue, she had a Bible under one arm or a book of some sort, and she was carrying a purse. But the hat, it was so out of place in Montana any time of year, but especially that time of the year in the early fall. I kept looking at that hat thinking This is really strange and in my spirit I just sort of had a feeling that this was an awesome moment. That this was a supernatural something.”

Siweck explains in her story that many angels on assignments usually have something about them that leads you to wonder whether or not what you experienced was actually an angel.
