    What Is Tomato Soup

    BEST Tomato Soup Recipe!

Tomato soup is a type of soup made with tomatoes as the primary ingredient. It can be made using fresh tomatoes, canned tomatoes, or tomato sauce. Tomato soup is usually seasoned with herbs and spices like fresh basil, and it often has a creamy or milk-based texture. According to historians, the first time tomato soup is mentioned was way back in 1857 when Eliza Leslie talked about it in her New Cooker Book. A few decades later, Joseph Campbell-the founder of Campbells Soup Company-made condensed tomato soup even more popular with his own version of Campbells tomato soup. And the rest, as they say, is history!

How To Dress Up A Can Of Tomato Soup

    Chelsea Coleon

Condensed soup doesnt have to be boring! Easily dress up a can of tomato soup with ingredients you have in your pantry.

Today, Im presenting you with a recipe that was truly born out of my college-student status . As with many American children, I have been eating grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup since I could handle solid food. Its convenient, easy, filling, and delicious.

But sometimes, it can be a bit boring. Lets face it, its simply a can of tomato puree and milk or water, depending on your preference. After a year of to-go Campbells cups of soup, I decided that I could no longer consume this boring tomato stuff as is, so I gave it a serious makeover.

Start by combining one can of tomato soup with a can full of milk, as you usually would. Were not using water here. I usually use 1% milk, but if you arent calorie conscious and have it on hand, of course it would be even better with half and half or heavy cream.

Now heres the fun part: add garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Taste and adjust. Let simmer for 10 minutes or so to release all that flavor.

Pour into bowls and top with a little bit of parmesan cheese and some fresh basil. Ta da! You are no longer eating boring old tomato soup.

If youre really feeling adventurous, make some homemade sandwich bread for your grilled cheeses. I used such bread for the sandwiches in these pictures.

This soup recipe is another way I like to use spaghetti sauce in recipes as a short cut and a boost of flavor. And probably one of my favorite ways, too. Also a jar of spaghetti sauce is usually something we have in the pantry so its an easy ingredient to use in recipes like this.

This beef and macaroni soup gets so thick its almost like a beef goulash. Some people have said that its similar to a homemade hamburger helper once the noodles soak up all the broth.

What You Can Serve Tomato Soup With

Here are some of our favorites:

    • Croutons: Add a little crunch to your soup with some store-bought or homemade croutons.
    • Grilled cheese: This classic pairing is always a hit! Serve your soup with a grilled cheese sandwich for a complete meal.
    • Fresh herbs: Sprinkle some chopped fresh parsley, basil, or oregano on top of your soup for a touch of flavor.
    • Parmesan cheese: Add some grated Parmesan cheese on top of your soup for a cheesy twist.

Why Homemade Tomato Soup Is Healthier Than The Canned Variety

To keep your ticker happy, skip the canned soup, which can be packed with sodium. For example, one can of condensed tomato soup comes with a whopping 1,110 milligrams of sodium, notes the U.S. Department of Agriculture . The American Heart Association recommends 1,500 mg of sodium as an ideal daily limit for Americans. A sodium-rich diet can contribute to high blood pressure, according to the AHA.

To help minimize your sodium intake, try whipping up one of these flavorful, nutritious recipes.
