Unique Book.
My 20-month old loves this book. It is simple, yet gets her imaginative juices flowing. Some of the illustrations are quite odd, but the rhymes about chicken soup for each month are delightful. This book is small, so little hands can hold it without trouble. This is a charming book for adults as well.

I admit though, that was not the first Maurice Sendak book I was ever introduced to. It was a cute little thing called Chicken Soup With Rice. I still remember exactly where I was and who I was with when our teacher read that book to us.
I was hooked from the first page. The illustrations enchanted me and the imaginative verses enthralled me. I have loved it ever since. Ive kept a copy all these years. The book is very well-loved and I have shared it with my children as a bedtime story too many times to count.

Pierre was a super contrary, disrespectful kid who had an unfortunate encounter with a lion who didnt play that. His main line in the book is I Dont Care! I remember the whole time being like How is he getting away with acting like this to his parents?! What is this nonsense?! I was seven and I knew better. So, when his little behind got eaten by a lion I was like AS IT SHOULD BE! No mercy! I wasnt getting away with that and I didnt know anyone that did either. Spoiler Alert: Pierre had a lifestyle change after his near-death experience with the lion. After he was spat out that boy CARED about everything.

Sendak delivers a charming little book of poems and creatively maintains the chicken-soup-with-rice theme all the way through. Each poem is well crafted, and the artwork gives the book a warm feeling, much like chicken soup itself. There is a child’s sensibility at work in the notions of a whale spouting chicken soup and of floating down the soupy Nile.
After a few readings, the words “chicken soup with rice” become like good-luck pieces that can be deployed on many occasions: Anything that’s genuinely worthwhile, anything that sees you through — that’s chicken soup with rice. When a feverish 4-year-old asks for chicken soup with rice, a parent knows he or she is in the presence of something elemental.
Instructions For Chicken Soup With Rice
First, put your chicken breasts in the pot. I used frozen and they worked great. If you dont use frozen you may need to adjust the cooking time accordingly.
Second, pour in your water and chicken broth. You can vary the water a little bit depending on if you want a thicker-type stew or more broth in your soup.
Third, add garlic, onion salt, salt, and pepper.
Fourth, stir in peas and carrots.
Next, add in rice.
Then, mix to cover everything with the broth.
Next, set your pot and let it cook. Then, let it do a natural release first, before doing a quick release.
Finally, remove the lid, shred the chicken, and serve right away.
Cook on manual at high pressure for 12 minutes.
Let pressure release naturally for 12 minutes. Then turn the valve to quick release.
Remove lid. Shred chicken with a fork.
Serve immediately.
I loved eating the soup for dinner tonight. I loved, even more, sharing a piece of my childhood with my son. Specifically, as we read Chicken Soup With Rice. But also reading Presto and Zesto in Limboland, and many other books by Maurice Sendak. Really, it was a walk down memory lane all while creating new memories with my child! I cant wait to buy some more to add to our collection. My kids are going to love getting these as gifts this year.

We each had a month to memorize and we had to perform it at an assembly.
