How To Make Honey Baked Ham

Bean soup with honeybaked ham bone

I prefer my ham to be warm, so thats what Ill be detailing here.

  • If warming in the slow cooker, trim ham to fit . Depending on your ham and your slow cooker, you may need to shave off a little bit to make the ham fit. If youll be warming your ham in the oven omit this step.
  • Combine butter and honey then massage into ham. I like to get some of the honey butter mixture in between the slices.
  • Cover and cook on LOW for about 4 hours. Again, this is for warming the ham in the slow cooker omit if warming in the oven.
  • Combine dry glaze ingredients.
  • Pat half of the sugar mixture on the warmed ham, then broil. Just for a few minutes, until bubbly and a little caramelized. Then remove from the oven.
  • Add remaining sugar mixture to saucepan with water or ham juices. Heat this mixture to a boil, and boil for about a minute, then remove from heat and brush or pour the glaze over the ham.
  • Broil ham again. Just for a minute or two, being careful not to let it burn!
  • Let ham rest at room temperature for 5-10 minutes. This allows the glaze to fully harden and get that classically crackly crust.
  • How To Make Ham And Bean Soup

    • Empty one can of drained and rinsed Great Northern beans into a large bowl or flat baking dish. Mash the beans with the back of a fork or a potato masher. Set aside.
    • Heat a large saucepan or stockpot over medium high heat while you chop the garlic, carrots, and onion.
    • Melt the butter into the pan and immediately add the chopped onion, and carrot. Once the onion has started to soften, add the garlic.
    • Let these sauté in butter until the onions are translucent and the carrots have started to soften. Make sure to move on to the next step before the garlic starts to brown.
    • When the veggies are ready, stir in water, ham, thyme, salt and pepper, and one can of whole along with the mashed Great Northern beans. Stir gently to combine you want the non-mashed beans to retain their shape in the final soup.
    • Once the soup is heated through, ladle into dishes and call the crowd to the table!

Of course, some of us cant have soup without lovely crusty bread. I try to choose a day-old loaf because the slightly drier bread is perfect for absorbing broth. If its a fresh baguette, I turn it into crunchy 10 minute Parmesan Cheese Bread.

You can also try changing this up by serving it as an open-faced sandwich. Start with a piece of your favorite flat toasted bread I love this with hearty whole wheat bread. Spoon soup over the toast and go at it with a knife and fork.

If youre watching calories and carbs, this ham and bean soup also pairs well with green salads topped with a tangy vinaigrette recipe, or a simple vegetable side dish like pickled asparagus.

Once you give this ham and bean soup recipe a try, I think youll be coming back to it again and again. You just cant go wrong with a quick and easy soup dinner everyone will love!

Slow Cooker Ham And Bean Soup

Winter and soup are a classic couple. Growing up, we had soup quite a bit, often times chili or chicken noodle. But anytime we had a holiday gathering that featured a big ham, I knew that a pot of ham and bean soup was in our near future. My mom and grandma would always use the ham bone to season what would become a fabulous pot of soup with a favor like no other.

Over Christmas, we were visiting my husbands side of the family and for our large family get together, we had my favorite: Honey Baked Ham. I just love that stuff and have never had a ham that tastes quite as good. My sweet mother-in-law wrapped up the bone, froze it and sent it home on our 8 hour long car ride home with us, telling me that she knew I would make a great pot of soup with it. That giant ham bone was precious cargo and magically stayed frozen the entire ride home. The following week I made the most delicious batch of slow cooker ham and bean soup Id ever had. I slightly adapted this classic Hurst Beans recipe, which is the method that my family always made growing up. It fed us for a week and we talked about it for the next two. It did a lot to help us shake off the post holiday malaise that often sets in when the Christmas tree comes down and the Advent wreath gets packed up. Its comfort in a bowl to the utmost extent.

    Its seriously that good.

Good luck and Ill see you on Friday with my special cocktail soup recipe!

    Happy Wednesday!

What To Do With Leftover Ham

    Ham Bone Bean Soup

When winter is dragging on, and the entire household seems like they have the sniffles, I pull out my stockpot and make soup.

Broth soups are so easy to throw together, I tend to rely on them a lot. Lately, one of my favorites is a leftover ham and bean soup recipe that uses up both extra ham I have in the freezer and those endless cans of beans I got on sale at some point.

One of the other things I love about this soup is the unassuming texture but rich flavor. While kids can shy away from soups with a lot of textures they have to decipher, I find that even really suspicious eaters will give this one a try.

As you might guess, my love for ham brings this one to the top of my mind a lot. For those less ham-obsessed, its a delicious leftover holiday ham recipe. So, pull out your pot, and take this leftover ham and bean soup recipe for a spin!

Can you use canned beans in this soup?

Yes, you can. Im not against using canned beans when that is what you have on hand. Just make sure you rinse the canned beans thoroughly before adding to the soup. You also will not need to cook the beans so that decreases the cooking time. If using canned beans, cook the broth and veggies until carrots are fork tender then add the beans and ham.

However, I highly recommend using dried beans. It takes some planning because you need to soak the beans. But it is worth that extra effort.

Tips For Making Ham And Bean Soup

    • Dont feel limited by the Great Northern Beans, use whatever white beans you have on hand.
    • In a hurry? You can substitute canned or frozen carrots for fresh as theyre precooked, so you dont have to wait for them to soften in the pan!
    • If youre going for a quick dinner with fresh carrots, give the carrots a few extra minutes on the sauté to be sure theyre soft when you serve the soup.
    • To have the flavors meld and deepen even more, you can let the soup simmer on the stove for about 20 30 minutes. If you do this, move on from sautéing when the carrots are still somewhat firm. Theyll continue cooking while the soup simmers.
    • If youre a thyme lover, I like to sprinkle a few leaves of fresh thyme on the top if I have them in the fridge or in my herb garden. The bright flavor works well with the more mellow dried thyme and adds lovely green to the top of the bowl. Fresh parsley works well too!
