Can I Make Holiday Green Bean Casserole In Advance

Holiday cooking is upon us and the questions have started but one of the most common questions I see asked is Can I make Green Bean Casserole in Advance? The short answer is yes!

Green bean casserole is one of the classic side dishes that can be prepped ahead if you are planning on making a casserole version for the holiday table.

The long answer is while you can make this dish and prep the night before, there are a few ways to make sure that your dish stays as fresh as the day of making.

The first thing you have to decide with green bean casserole is what KIND of casserole are you making. Many people grew up with canned green bean casserole that is made with Campbells soup and canned greened beans. This type of recipe is certainly the most well-known and the one you probably ate growing up. And trust me, I am not going to knock it! Its totally delicious.

But there are other ways to make green bean casserole depending on the type of bean you want to use fresh, frozen, or canned and if you want to use canned soup or create heavy cream.

Refrigeration and storage for make-ahead green bean casserole

  • As with all food, make sure the casserole dish is sealed tightly with foil or an airtight container prior to the fridge. This keeps smells and tastes out of the food as well as keeps it as fresh as possible.

This green bean casserole is easy to make, and doesnt require cream of mushroom soup, so you get great, from-scratch flavor but without extra hassle.

Green bean casseroles notoriously call for cream of mushroom soup. Do you know whats in that stuff? Okay, it tastes alright, but it is full of preservatives and texture enhancing chemicals that you cant pronounce. Why use it when you can make this casserole with better, healthier ingredients and create something even tastier? Youll never have to beg your kids to eat their green beans when theyre made using this delicious recipe.

This recipe is an easier version of my Old Fashioned Green Bean Casserole, which is all from scratch. In this version, you will use canned green beans and prepared fried onions, which makes it simpler, faster and easier than my traditional method. Even so, this recipe is far superior to the ones that use cream of mushroom soup in them.

Green Bean Casserole Is Perfect For 2020

This is a weird year and just about everyone knows that this Thanksgiving wont be a normal thanksgiving with lots of friends and family. Some people may be celebrating on their own, or with just one other person. But while you cant make a mini turkey or a single mashed potato , you can definitely scale this recipe down to make it for 1. It also adds a tiny bit of the feel-good nostalgia and normalcy we probably need this year.

Can I Use Frozen Or Canned Green Beans

Green Bean Casserole with Campbell

Fresh is best, but frozen or even canned green beans can be used for green bean casserole if youre in a pinch.

If using frozen green beans, follow the cooking directions listed on the package. You may want to reduce the cook time slightly, however, because you want to be sure your green beans have a little bite to them. Mushy green beans are gross!

If using canned green beans, youll likely experience a canned flavor and slightly mushy texture. Simply drain, rinse, and continue with the recipe as directed.

Tips For Fresh Green Bean Casserole

  • Ive already harped on this, but its worth repeating that fresh green beans are going to make a big difference in this dish. Yes, its kind of a bother to blanch them, but its worth it.
  • You could skip the french fried onions and just use all panko bread crumbs instead if fried onions arent your thing.
  • Chop your beans in half or in thirds for easier eating or leave them whole. Either approach works.
  • Even though Im a HUGE fan of mushrooms, I actually prefer green bean casserole without them so the fresh, bright green bean flavor can come to the forefront without being muted by the mushrooms. But there is a note at the end of the recipe with instructions on when and how to add the mushrooms to this dish if you prefer it that way.

How To Store & Reheat Your Green Bean Casserole

Despite the rather saucy texture of this casserole, it actually stores and reheats really well.

You just need to tightly wrap the entire casserole dish in plastic wrap and then store the whole thing in the fridge. When you want to eat some, just scoop out a portion and put it in a serving bowl, and microwave the whole thing for about 30-90 seconds, or until piping hot.

You can also put it in the oven at around 350 Fahrenheit for 15 minutes until bubbly, but you might start to see the milk sauce separating if you leave it too long.

This Green Bean Casserole Recipe

This Classic Green Bean Casserole is made with cream of ...

Why choose this recipe over the hundreds of others on the Internet and TV? Because its simple, pared down, and refined, while still being no-holds barred on taste and umami factor, using every tool at our disposal: parmigiano-reggiano cheese, fish sauce, soy sauce, and many mushrooms.

Ive replaced every component of the classic dish with an upgrade:

  • Mushroom soup + milk: make our own, even more mushroom-y. Mushroom++
  • Soy sauce: I recommend a 1-2 punch of dark mushroom soy sauce + fish sauce.
  • Canned green beans: switch out for very briefly blanched farm fresh green beans.
  • Frenchs fried onions: Actually you cant improve this, more on this later down.

Cream Of Chicken Soup

Cream of chicken soup is another great substitute for cream of mushroom soup. It is a delicious and satisfying base for casseroles in general. This will be no different in green bean casserole. The aromatic flavor of the chicken enhances the soups taste and aroma. However, when preparing it, the amount of salt should be reduced. This is due to the presence of salt while preparing chicken meat.

One serving of cream of chicken soup contains 5g sugar, 23g fat, 10g carb, 2g protein, and 0.9g of salt. It also contains about 347kcal, 13g saturates, and 2g fiber. Theres no hard rule when using the cream of chicken as a substitute. Just use it in the same way you would use cream of mushroom soup in your dish.

Heres How You Make It

Heres how you make this super easy homemade green bean casserole its easy, I promise!

  • Cook the bacon until its crisp and be sure to reserve the drippings. Allow the bacon to cool a bit, then chop it up.
  • In a large skillet, combine the green beans, mushrooms, and bacon drippings, sauteeing over medium heat for 6-8 minutes.

No Mushroom Green Bean Casserole Recipe

My family’s favorite green bean casserole recipe is always a must-have at my own Thanksgiving table and pretty much any Holiday. I won’t lie… I even make it as a side dish for a nice Sunday dinner. It’s that good.

There are only 3 foods I refuse to eat and mushrooms is one of them! Which is why I love this green bean casserole because there are no mushrooms in it.

It’s perfect for those that have mushroom allergies or if you’re like me and just don’t like them.

I have absolutely nothing against canned soup but when I can make something from scratch that just takes minutes, I happen to love that it can replace a canned ingredient in a recipe.

What Can Be Substituted For French Fried Onion

Easy Green Bean Casserole (No Cream of Mushroom!)

If you dont have or dont like French fried onions , then there are some things you can use as substitutes, because you absolutely have to have that crunchy top, even if you dont use fried onions.

    • Use plain, dried bread crumbs mixed with a little bit of butter.
    • Salad croutons can work too, just break them up if they are big cubes.
    • I admit, I have used crushed potato chips and cornflakes for casserole toppings with great results!
    • Crush up butter crackers and put those on top before baking.
    • Sliced and fried shallots.

Can You Leave The Mushrooms Out Of The Casserole

Now there are very few things that could make this casserole any better, but the addition of fresh mushrooms perfection!

Im a huge mushroom-lover, but if youre not a big fan, just go ahead and leave them out.

But seriously though you should leave them in and feel good about doubling your veggie intake for the day.

    To Prepare Ahead Of Time

This dish can be made up to 48 hours ahead of time. Prepare as directed except leave the crispy onion topping in a separate container so they dont get soggy. I usually place them in a sealed sandwich bag right in the dish and sprinkle before baking.

Remove the dish from the refrigerator at least 30 minutes before baking. If its really chilled, you may need to add up to 10 minutes extra cook time.

If youre heading to someone elses house for dinner, do everything except the last 10 minutes of baking and bring it along with you covered in tin foil! Top with crispy onions and bake until hot and bubbly!

When Did Green Bean Casserole Become Popular

Yeah, so Im not 100% sure how the original green bean casserole started, but my mom has some old cookbooks from the 50s and its in there! She seems to think it probably started by Campbells soup, as they used to put out recipes in the early 50s , so they came up with the recipe to come up with ways to use their cream of chicken and cream of mushroom soups.

    Soy Sauce Vs Fish Sauce

    Gluten Free Green Bean Casserole

Believe it or not, soy sauce was integral to this recipe right when it was invented in the 50s. Im personally in shock that it was a popular enough ingredient back then that they included it, but it sure adds a deep layer of flavor you cant get otherwise. It blows my mind how way ahead of her time Dorcas was with her use of soy sauce, which she chose over celery salt. Was soy sauce just that common in the 50s?

But you know, even though things can be too salty, sweet, sour, or bitter, Ive never heard anyone say something was too umami. So I included fish sauce in my version to really boost that umami off the umami chart.

If you are really well stocked , I recommend mushroom dark soy sauce for extra mushroom flavor. It goes great with anything else youd ever want to use soy sauce for too.
