The cream of mushroom base is Campbells® canned condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup. Since its condensed, it is richer and thicker than a traditional soup. If you were preparing this as a standalone soup, you would add one cup of water to one full can of soup.
However, for this recipe and many other casseroles or bakes, it is best to use the soup without additional liquid.
I add sour cream and chicken stock to the Campbells® Condensed Soup and mix it separately before pouring it over the chicken.

Can I Use Chicken Thighs Instead Of Chicken Breasts
Yup! It depends on which type of meat you prefer. If you like all-white meat, then I would recommend using the chicken breast. If you like darker meat, then chicken thighs are the way to go!
With both cuts of poultry, make sure to remove the outer skin off the chicken before you place them into the crockpot. If you leave them on to cook with the chicken, they will just be very soggy and it probably wont taste as good as it would if it were crispy.

How To Make This Recipe For Smothered Chicken
Before you start adding all of the ingredients into the crockpot, spray the sides of the slow cooker with some non-stick cooking spray or use a slow cooker liner.
Place the chicken breasts in a single layer at the bottom of the cooker and season them with some fresh pepper.
In a separate bowl, mix both condensed soups, onion soup mix, fresh sliced mushrooms, and water. Gently fold the mixture together until it is all combined.
Pour the mushroom gravy mixture evenly over the chicken breasts. Use a spatula to help spread the gravy evenly over all of the chicken.
Cook on HIGH for 4 to 4 1/2 hours or on LOW for 7 to 8 hours. Be sure to adjust cooking times according to how fast/slow your cooker cooks.

If youve ever made french onion soup, you know two things. One, its really pretty straight forward and theres nothing too complicated. Two, the onions take a second to really caramelize down. It can take a little more time than the usual thirty-minute start to finish dinner, but its worth the wait.
And I dont know, something about caramelizing onions on the stove is very relaxing and cozy. However, I am weirdIm probably the only one that feels that way.
Anyway, Ive made a lot of French onion soup over the years. Sometimes Ive taken shortcuts with the onions, but with this soup, I wanted to deeply caramelize them to ensure they make for the most flavorful French onion soup.
So, start with sweet yellow onions, butter, a touch of honey, and dry white wine.
The butter is used for obvious reasonsfat, flavor, and deliciousness. The honey helps to cook and caramelize the onions faster. I always find these ingredients to be key when trying to achieve perfectly caramelized onions. Now, the wineuse a dry white wine, which is pretty traditional in most French onion soups. Youll cook about half of the wine into the onions. Not only does this help the onions to caramelize quickly and evenly, it also infuses the onions with incredibly rich flavor.
If you prefer not to cook with wine, I recommend using about half a cup of apple cider or apple juice to caramelize the onions. For the remaining amount of wine , use chicken or vegetable broth.

Saut Mushrooms Before Baking
Mushrooms are one of my favorite casserole ingredients. They are so versatile, meaty, and take on any flavor with ease.
In the same skillet you seared the chicken in, add sliced mushrooms, a little bit more butter, and season with black pepper. Cook them for about 3 minutes to sauté them and make them more flavorful.
How Long To Bake Cream Of Mushroom Chicken
The total baking time will vary depending on the size, weight and type of chicken pieces that you choose. If using a whole cut-up chicken or bone-in, skin-on chicken breasts or thighs, you will need to bake the chicken in the sauce for about 1 hour. You can reduce the cooking time for boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, which will likely only need about 30-45 minutes in a 350° F oven. For best results, always use an instant-read thermometer to know when you chicken is done. It should reach an internal temperature of 165° F.

Cook on high for 4 hours or low from 6-7. Server over rice, egg noodles or mashed potatoes. You could also top with Swiss cheese. Serves 4-6.
Note: You can easily shred the chicken in the crock pot and serve shredded too.

HOW TO MAKE SLOW COOKER SMOTHERED PORK CHOPS
Spray slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray. Place pork chops in cooker season with salt and pepper if you like. In a large bowl, mix condensed soups, onion soup mix, mushrooms and water. Mix well. Pour mixture over pork chops. Cook on high for 4 to 5 hours or on low for 7 to 8 hours.
*Be sure to watch out for bones when using bone-in pork chops. Make sure the pork chops reach a safe minimum internal temperature of 145 degree F. with a 3 minute resting time. Each slow cooker cooks at different rates, adjust cooking times according to your cooker.
Serve with mashed potatoes, rice or noodles, your favorite veggies and a salad.
