Is Lentil Soup Good For You

Now that you have seen the calorific values of lentil soup, you may be wondering if lentil soup is good for you? Besides being low in calories, lentil soup also has some very interesting nutritional values, but nowhere near as many as if you were to eat lentils on their own, boiled. High in vitamin A, protein and iron, as well as providing small amounts of several other vitamins and minerals, lentil soup is definitely something that you can class as good for you. It is low in sugar, and fat, as well as having no cholesterol in it. The only sour point is that lentil soup has quite a high level of sodium, and this is something that you should be limiting in your diet.

Sodium In Canned Soup

When you make lentil soup yourself, you can control the amount of sodium that’s added by decreasing salt in the recipe and using low-sodium broth. However, when you purchase pre-made or canned soup, it’s often high in sodium. For example, lentil soup from Target has 720 milligrams of sodium per one-cup serving, according to USDA’s FoodData Central.

Although some sodium is essential for your body, you should consume less than 2,300 milligrams per day, recommends the Mayo Clinic. The average person, however, consumes about 3,400 milligrams a day, often from prepared foods, and certain people are hyper-sensitive to too much salt in the diet. Too much sodium on a regular basis increases the risk for hypertension, or high blood pressure, notes the Linus Pauling Institute. Chronic hypertension also increases the likelihood of developing heart disease or having a stroke.

Place in an air-tight container and keep in fridge for up to 5 days. To freeze, place in a freezer-safe Ziploc bag and freeze. You can keep this in the freezer for 4-5 months.

How to reheat Lentil Soup?

If frozen, place in fridge to thaw overnight. To reheat, place in pot and cook on low-medium heat until heated through and ready to serve.

Can you add meat to lentil soup?

Of course! We like to add chicken or sausage to this lentil soup. Just be sure to have this cooked up before making your soup and add it right before simmering.

This soup can be kept warm and served later or refrigerated and reheated throughout the week for lunch or for dinner on a busy weeknight.

How to reheat: If reheating the entire pot of soup, add an additional cup of water, stir and reheat on the stovetop. If reheating individual portions, place in a microwave safe container and add 1 tablespoon of water, stir and heat until warm throughout.

Ingredients To Make Lentil Soup

If you follow my blog, then you know Im a huge fan of quick and easy recipes that bolster a lot of nutrition. This recipe is another example of that. Soups and stews, in general, are great because you can get a wide variety of nutrients in just one pot. Not only does that make for an easy cleanup, they are easy to store and reheat for a quick meal during the week. If you have a busy family like me, thats a win for everyone!

Heres what you need to make this hearty lentil soup.

Lentils

The huge benefit to using dried lentils instead of dried beans is that they dont need to soak. You simply open the package, pour the lentils into a colander, rinse then cook. I do recommend sifting through them and discarding any loose skins or discolored pieces. But even if you dont, your soup will turn out! This recipe calls for 2 cups of dried lentils.

Vegetable Broth

Adding broth adds lots of flavor. I use vegetable broth for this recipe but you can use chicken broth if you prefer. You could also substitute water and bouillon, but that adds an extra step. Its easier to open a box of broth and pour it into your pot. If you are watching your sodium intake, I recommend using a reduced sodium broth.

Onion

Youll need one medium sized onion for this recipe. I dice it into small pieces so that it blends into the soup well. If my kids bite into a large chunk of onion, they wont bother having another taste. Its a personal preference, though.

Garlic
Olive Oil
Diced Tomatoes
Spinach

This Carrot And Lentil Soup Is So Good

It’s so easy with minimal ingredients. Admittedly, some of the ingredients are kind of trendy “healthy” ingredients, like ginger, turmeric, lemon, and garlic. But don’t let that scare you away, it totally doesn’t taste overly “healthy”. It’s still creamy and hearty, but with all nourishing ingredients.

With so few simple ingredients, it’s also a great soup for those with dietary restrictions. This soup is totally plant-based and is free of the top eight most common food allergens .

One cup of lentil soup contains 159 calories, 22 grams of carbohydrates and 4 grams of fat, according to USDA’s FoodData Central. However, the canned or pre-made lentil soup calories can be much higher or much lower, depending on the brand purchased. For example, 1 cup of lentil soup from Whole Foods Market has just 100 calories, while a cup of Saor lentil soup has 350 calories.

The majority of lentil soup’s calories and carbs come from the lentils themselves, which, according to USDA’s FoodData Central, contain 114 calories and nearly 20 grams of carbohydrates per 100-gram serving. However, there is also plenty of plant-based protein and fiber in lentil soup, both of which are a beneficial part of a healthy diet. Like all types of legumes, or pulses, lentils are high in both nutrients, with each 100-gram serving of legumes containing 9 grams of protein and nearly 8 grams of fiber.

Protein plays a vital role in your body by providing 20 types of amino acids, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. These amino acids are an essential component of every cell in your body and help to build and repair cells and body tissues, including muscles.

Which Lentils Are Low In Calories

  • Lentils in a yellow color The addition of some olive oil and salt transforms this recipe into a delectable meal that is loaded with protein.
  • Yellow lentils provide 0.0796 grams of protein for every calorie, placing them in third position when compared to other types of lentils.
  • When compared to other kinds of lentils, they have a caloric and carbohydrate content that is on the lower end of the spectrum.

How To Make Red Lentil Soup

  • Sauté the aromatics and spices. Sauté the onions and garlic over medium heat in a little bit of olive oil. Give them a change to soften and turn translucent. Then add the spices. Sautéing the spices is the fastest, richest way to build flavor. No amount of simmering will extract as much flavor from spices as frying. Take your time sautéing all the ingredients it will add layers of flavor.
  • Caramelize the tomato paste. One trick Ive learned from Geoffrey Zakarian, a chef in New York City, is to let tomato paste brown in olive oil together with the aromatics and spices. This can boost the soup flavor in a big way. Letting the tomato paste heat through and then deglaze the pan caramelizes the sugars, making the soup smoother and sweeter.
  • Add the carrots, lentils and vegetable broth. Add the rest of the ingredients and bring it to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to low, season with salt , and simmer, partially covered, until the lentils begin to break apart into a smooth, velvet-like texture.
  • Blend . If the soup is not creamy enough for you, you can always purée half of the soup in a blender.
  • Stir in the lemon juice and spinach. Finish the soup off with a squeeze of lemon juice and a handful of fresh baby spinach.

    Is Lentil Carrot Soup Healthy

I absolutely consider it healthy. It’s full of nourishing ingredients, vegetables, antioxidants, fiber, and plant-based protein. Meeting recommended amounts of fiber can help achieve better digestion and regularity, better balanced blood sugars, and creates more filling meals, which can also help with weight loss and weight maintenance.

Know, too, that âhealthyâ is subjective. The foods that help one maintain their health may or may not work for you – and thatâs okay! Honor the body you have. As a registered dietitian nutritionist, I suggest eating a variety of nourishing foods that help you feel good and achieve or maintain your health, balanced with the foods you love. Remember – an election isnât won with every vote, but the majority. Your health is the same way – the overall dietary pattern is what matters most.

Top Tips To Make This Recipe

    • Save yourself some time and don’t worry about peeling the carrots. Just give them a good scrub and you’re good to go!
    • Need to save a little time? Chop the carrots into smaller pieces. The smaller the pieces, the faster they cook.
    • When you’re sauteing the onions and garlic, be sure to stir regularly so the onions and garlic don’t burn.
    • If you don’t have an immersion blender and you’re using a blender while your soup is quite hot, see if there is a small, center, removable piece in your blender lid. Remove it, and instead cover the lid with a towel. This will still prevent anything from splattering out, but the towel can let small amounts of steam to escape to prevent too much steam from building up in the blender, potentially creating too much pressure. As soon as you’re done blending, remove the lid.
