Tips For Making Burgers
Dont overwork the patties. This is the most important thing to keep in mind when making burgers.
Mixing breaks down the proteins in the beef, pushing the juices out of the meat. The more you handle the beef, the drier the meat gets!
The warmer your hands, the faster the proteins will break down. Wash your hands before working the beef so they stay cold.
The best meat for burgers is ground chuck steak. For the juiciest burgers, youll want the ratio to be 80-85% lean, 15-20% fat.
Be as careful as possible when forming the patties. This will ensure juicy burgers. Again, you dont want to overmix or mash the beef!
Form an indent at the center of the patty using your thumb. This will prevent the burgers from puffing up.
As the patties cook, the heat pushes the juice towards the center, causing the burger to bloat. But if they have a dent in the middle, the burgers will be flat when cooked.
Chill the patties for 10 minutes before cooking. This will seal all the beefs juices in!
Grill on high heat. This will give the patties that nice, crusty, seared surface.
Do not touch the patties once theyre on the grill. Dont press them with a spatula and dont flip them over and over. Just let them sit there, covered.
Otherwise, again, they will be tough and dry.
To check for doneness, gently press the surface. A medium-rare burger will be slightly springy. But for more accuracy, you can use a meat thermometer to test. Heres a simple guide:

How To Make Homemade Dry Onion Soup Mix:
Measure all of the ingredients into a bowl or a lidded container.
Mix together well. Use as a substitute for a 1-ounce envelope of dry onion soup mix.
You could certainly make extra and pop it into an old container to use for later!
To make soup: Place this mix into medium saucepan. Stir in 4 cups water and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes. Makes about 3 ½ cups.
To make onion dip: Combine this mix with 1 container sour cream.

The ingredients in Liptons onion soup mix include onions, salt, cornstarch, onion powder and salt. Some of the other main ingredients are autolyzed yeast extract, caramel color, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, monosodium glutmate and corn syrup. The mix also contains disodium inosinate, disodium guanylate and sulfur dioxide.
Lipton also carries beefy onion, onion mushroom and golden onion soup mixes, all of which have varying ingredients. For instance, beefy onion soup mix has wheat flour while onion and mushroom soup contains mushrooms.
Lipton onion soup mix can be used to make a variety of dishes ranging from soups and dips and can also serve as a primary ingredient in beef pot roast. To make beef pot roast, combine a pot roast and 2 envelopes of Lipton onion soup mix in a slow cooker. Top with baby carrots, new potatoes and 2 cups of water, and cook at low heat for up to 10 hours.
To make rather than purchase onion soup mix, combine 3 tablespoons of dried minced onion, 1 teaspoon of onion powder, 1/8 teaspoon of celery seeds, 1/4 teaspoon of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of celery flakes in a container. Add 4 teaspoons of beef bouillon granules, and season with freshly ground black pepper. Use the mix in place of 1 envelope of Liptons onion soup mix.

How To Use Onion Dry Soup Mix
I have never used onion soup mix to actually make soup. I always use it as an ingredient in other things.
I always use some in my meatloaf. Everyone loves my meatloaf, and this is my secret ingredient.
I also sprinkle some onion soup mix on top of a pork roast and slow cook it all day in my Hamilton Beach slow cooker. We have that for dinner, and the next day it gets turned into BBQ pulled pork. Yum!
Side note: I love my Hamilton Beach slow cooker! I’ve had it about 10 years and am on my third crock. I’ve been lucky enough to find extra crocks at thrift stores for $2 each. It locks the lid down, so it gets hotter than other slow cookers.
I use it at least once a week and sometimes up to four times a week, so it’s been used a lot over the years. I have four slow cookers, but this is by far my favorite of the four.
If I’m cooking a beef roast, I’ll add some onion soup mix and some brown gravy. Then I let it slow cook for several hours. It’s the best way to make a roast in my humble opinion.
Tonight, I’m making beef tips with this onion soup mix recipe and cream of something soup in my Instant Pot. It’s one of my favorite Instant Pot meals.

When you read a label looking for MSG you might be able to find it that easily, but it doesnt mean that its not in there. There is a whole list of ingredients out there that have MSG in them but have different names on the labels.
