  • Its Not The Answer Its The Question

As the doctor pointed at the blue, shape-shifting blobs moving across a darkened screen, I tried to be analytical even as I was feeling devastated. I tried to appear hopeful, while all I heard was one word: malignant. Ever since my doctor had said the c-word along with my name, both in the same sentence, all I really saw was my life slipping away, vanishing before my eyes.

My thoughts raced in a hundred directions. Im only forty-four, too young to leave behind the people who love me. And my five Labradors, my Jack Russellwhat about them? Would they feel as if Id abandoned them? Wonder what theyd done wrong?

For the past year, Id been dealing with my mothers battle against her own inoperable cancer. Then, a week before my surgery, my father was rushed to the hospital for an emergency procedure, a complication from his colon cancer.

Id blinked, and suddenly we were all struggling for our lives.

I wondered: Why me? A ridiculous question when you think about it, really, because theres no logical answer. Cancer is what happens to other people, people who dont take good care of themselves, people exposed to insidious carcinogens or deadly asbestos, people living under power lines. People just like me.

Was I going crazy? Had the stress from my diagnosis forced some sort of break with reality? It seemed possible. On the outside, my world was in turmoil. It would have been easy to fall apart, but instead, I did the opposite. I pulled everything together.

Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul

Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Cancer Book,

Everyone by now is familiar with the series, the brilliant books of essays where people tell their own stories of hope and inspiration concerning whatever demographic they inhabit my daughter loved , but you can read about the golfers soul, the cat lovers soul, and even the middle schoolers soul. Their latest for cancer patients has just arrived in byJack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, and David Tabatsky

I like the Chicken Soup approach because you can find something for everyone in the 101 stories of Courage, Support & Love as the cover says. The essays come from people ages 11 and up, with 25 states represented as well as four foreign countries. Essays touch on around 30 kinds of cancer and include essays by and about nurses, doctors, caregivers, patients, and friends.

The table of contents divides the stories into categories that make it possible to skip those issues you dont want to readlike family issues when you are going through cancer solo. My favorites are probably the kids approach to cancer, which always seem to be mystical, magical, and hysterically funny compared to adults.

In the foreward, Tabatsky quotes one woman who finally responds to someone asking if she has lost her hair with, No, its just invisible. Darn, wish I had used that one when I was bald.
