What You Should Know
As of the most recent test, performed on September 25, 2019:
- This product was NOT labeled Gluten Free
- It was not certified Gluten Free
- The product is not labeled gluten free. But the ingredient label does not mention any obvious gluten-containing ingredients. Therefore, we will expect it to contain less than 20 PPM of gluten to be considered gluten free
Based on the combined results of all tests, as of September 25, 2019:
- Despite not being labeled gluten free, this products gluten content appears to be below 3 PPM
- One Nima Sensor test has been performed. That test indicated the product was gluten free.
- One GlutenTox Sticks Plus test has been performed. That test indicated the product contained less than 3 PPM of gluten.
- Indications are that this product contains significantly less gluten than the generally accepted 20 PPM maximum gluten threshold, which is considered by many to be a safe level for consumption by most people who are sensitive to gluten.

Customizing Dry Soup Mixes
In my opinion, most dry soup mixes seem to function better as a base, rather than as a stand-alone meal, although they can work for that as well. Its just based on personal preference. Here are some ways to change things up a bit:
- Use broth instead of water. Vegetable, chicken, beef or mix them.
- Vary the spices and seasonings.
- For added creaminess, mash some of the soup or puree briefly.
- Add additional vegetables. Fresh, frozen , canned. If using freeze-dried, youll need to add more water to allow for the rehydrating process.
- Add pasta or grain. Again, you may need to adjust the liquid. Adding pasta or rice is an easy and inexpensive way to make a meal stretch.
- Add/vary the protein.
- Make them the consistency of stew and use as a topping. Putting them over rice, pasta, toasted bread, baked/mashed potatoes, etc, are also great ways to stretch a meal.
- Add toppings. Bacon, green onions, oyster crackers, grated cheese, tortilla strips, croutons, sour cream/greek yogurt, you name it.
- Check the package and the manufacturers website for recipe ideas. They want you to purchase more of their product so they provide suggestions in hopes of persuading you to do so.

Are They Nutritious Enough For Emergency Food Storage
Most of these soups are pretty low in calories per serving. Thats a significant limitation. While it may be fine for the occasional lunch on an average day, in an emergency situation that isnt going to cut it. Youre going to have to beef up the calorie content. This is simple and easy to do with a bit of planning. Experiment with additions to the mixes to provide variety AND to increase the calories and nutrients. Then be sure to store those additional items as well.
The bean soup versions typically did well in protein, which is easily increased by adding your own meat, and fiber is decent. Unless its a cream soup, fats are a big fat zero or close to zero, and since fat is flavor, it makes sense that the seasoning packets are loaded with salt. Augason Farms has an eye-popping amount of sodium in their chicken noodle soup mix.
Therefore, you can increase their nutritional content by adding ingredients, but if seasonings are pre-mixed in the package, you cant remove something to make the soup healthier. So lets talk about ingredients now.
The Results Of Test Driving Some Dry Soup Mixes
I experimented with two different brands of soup mixes. Here are my results:
Bobs Red Mill Vegie Soup Mix
Ok, right off the bat, I noticed that the packaging date is included under the best buy date. And not in some hard-to-decipher code, either. Therefore I know that this bag was packaged seven weeks ago, and the best buy date is still about two years out. Freshness, taste, and nutritional quality should be excellent.
Do you think this should be called a soup starter rather than a mix? Im unsure. Its just peas, grains, and vegetable pasta. No seasonings were added so that makes it a good option for low-sodium diets, or if you just want control over the seasonings. But that also means the flavor is all up to you. Im not exactly a fearless cook so I found this a bit intimidating. However, I read a few reviews stating they liked the mix as is, or just made with broth and a little onion. I like simple, so thats the route I went.
I combined one cup soup mix with a four-cup combo of garlic and vegetable broth, 1 tsp. salt, and tossed in 1-1/2 teaspoons dried onion. The result? This produced a flavorful soup with some tooth that actually felt hearty.
I was actually surprised enough I decided to put it through a more rigorous test I made a second batch using only the basic instructions provided on the package: water and salt. The result? Color me quite surprised. I thought it was good. If all I had was water and salt, I could definitely eat this.

What Is The Shelf Life Of Dry Soup Mixes
Thats the million-dollar question, isnt it? If you want to add soup mixes to your prepper food storage, shelf life is important.
Unfortunately, there is no hard and fast rule. As with any other item in your food storage, there are many variables at play. Of course, there are the 5 enemies of food storage. Even one of those falling outside of optimum can negatively impact a foods longevity to varying degrees.
But the product itself or its ingredients, if there are multiple, also play a part. For example, if the dry soup mix contains an oil, that oil can go rancid. So, if you open a mix and it smells off, tastes off, or looks off, discard it. Or if its moldy, of course. Yuck. But thats not a lot of help if youre wanting to use them before they go bad and need a rotation schedule.
The simpler the mix, the longer its shelf life dried veggies, some seasonings, and freeze-dried meat or chicken. Those ingredients naturally have a longer shelf life.
If youre reading this article, chances are you really like soup! So do I. My recommendation is to stock up on the brands and varieties you like best, make note of their best by dates, and plan to use the soup mix within a year or so of that date. Store them in small bins categorized by similar best by dates to help you know which mixes to start using first.

Weve all seen the dry bags of soup in the canned soup aisle, and youve either taken the plunge, or decidedly took a hard pass. Can soup really taste good out of a bag with 8 cups of water?
Uh yes?
But, it can also taste better.
Im going to transform Bear Creek Creamy Potato soup into Shrimp, Potato and Corn Chowder. Were going to change that bland bean tortilla soup into a Meaty Taco Soup, and finally, well level up that Broccoli Cheese to a Broccoli, Cheese & Chicken soup with Garlic Croutons.

Creamy Potato Soup Recipe
This soup is very easy to make. I use a lot of Bear Creek soup mixes as a base for my soup, as they are nice and spicy. It is a dressed up soup mix. My GRANDSONS love it.

Bear Creek Country Kitchens Cheddar Broccoli Soup Mix
I know some of you have probably already tried these soup mixes. But, today, I finally broke down and tried one for the first time. I tried the Cheddar Broccoli flavor, and, I found it to be pretty awesome! I also noticed that the best buy date is 2 years out , which would make the soups good for my prepper pantry! I dont want to overload on them because I do have healthier foods stored away. However, these soup mixes would be a good filler for those times, you know, whatever they might be.
So, since I pack our emergency/survival meals up into individual servings, I thought I would test this bag of soup mix in the same way. So, what I did was put the dry soup mix into a dry bowl. Then I used a wire whisk to mix it well. Once it was mixed, I divided it into 8 separate single servings . I put the individual servings into plastic baggies . I just used zipper baggies because I will be using them up within a couple of months or so. If I were doing this for long term food storage, I would put the individual servings into mylar bags with O2 absorbers and seal the mylar bags.
I know there are going to be those who say that these soup mixes arent all that healthy. And, youre probably right. But, as I saidas a filler they would be just fine its definitely not something I would recommend eating every day.
