One of the downsides of stocking up on dry soup mixes is in their packaging plastic bags that arent designed to protect the food inside for more than just a handful of months, if that.

If the packaging is transparent, it allows in light, which deteriorates food over time, and all the packaging that Ive seen doesnt exclude oxygen, another problem for long-term storage.

In addition, microscopic insect eggs can get a free ride into the packaging right along with the soup ingredients! Over time, these eggs do what comes naturally they hatch and you end up with tiny bugs!

Other insects and rodents can chew their way through the plastic packaging, giving you one more headache!

If youre serious about stocking up on dry soup mixes, then youll also need to get serious about how you go about storing them.

My best recommendation is this: Empty the soup mixes into canning jars and add an oxygen absorber. Then, place the canning jars in the freezer for at least a week to kill any insect eggs. The glass jars are rodent-proof.

Youll only need to store the jars in a dark, cool location to provide the optimal storage environment. Be sure to label the jars with the soup flavor and brand name. Cut out the soup ingredient list and cooking instructions and tape that to the outside of the jar.

Your primary concerns are to protect the soup mixes from light, heat, humidity, pests, and oxygen.

Customizing Dry Soup Mixes

In my opinion, most dry soup mixes seem to function better as a base, rather than as a stand-alone meal, although they can work for that as well. Its just based on personal preference. Here are some ways to change things up a bit:

  • Use broth instead of water. Vegetable, chicken, beef or mix them.
  • Vary the spices and seasonings.
  • For added creaminess, mash some of the soup or puree briefly.
  • Add additional vegetables. Fresh, frozen , canned. If using freeze-dried, youll need to add more water to allow for the rehydrating process.
  • Add pasta or grain. Again, you may need to adjust the liquid. Adding pasta or rice is an easy and inexpensive way to make a meal stretch.
  • Add/vary the protein.
  • Make them the consistency of stew and use as a topping. Putting them over rice, pasta, toasted bread, baked/mashed potatoes, etc, are also great ways to stretch a meal.
  • Add toppings. Bacon, green onions, oyster crackers, grated cheese, tortilla strips, croutons, sour cream/greek yogurt, you name it.
  • Check the package and the manufacturers website for recipe ideas. They want you to purchase more of their product so they provide suggestions in hopes of persuading you to do so.

How To Make Sense Of Manufacturer Dates On Packaging

Commercially packaged dry soup mixes are usually marked with one of three dates: Best By, Best If Used By, or Best When Used By. Those all say and mean the same thing, which is not necessarily, by the way, when its no longer safe to eat. In other words, theyre not expiration dates. Those dates merely indicate the manufacturers estimate of quality. Before that date, best product quality. After that date, product qualityits flavor and nutritional contentdeclines. The USDA has a pretty thorough explanation about food product dating if youd like to better understand it.

Generally speaking, the consensus seems to be that a properly stored dry soup mix stays at peak quality for approximately 18-24 months. The clock starts from packaging, though, not from when you purchase it. Keep that in mind.

Some examples of manufacturer dates

Per their website, Bobs Red Mill Vegetable Soup Mix, for example, has a 24-month shelf life. However, they also state that shelf life can potentially be extended by about six months from the best by date printed on the package if the mix is frozen or stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.

Both #10 cans of Augason Farms Cheddar Broccoli and Cheesy Potato Soups state the unopened contents are good for up to 10 years based on storage conditions. Few of us are able to consistently keep our food storage in ideal conditions long-term so dont ignore the up to part of that shelf life.

1 can cut okra
1/2 lb. of peeled, raw, and deveined shrimp.
1/2 lb. of cooked frozen crawfish tails.
2 teaspoons file’

Steps:

  • Bring 8 cups of water to a rolling boil. Whisk in bag of gumbo mix lower heat and simmer for 20 to 30 min. stirring frequently. Add 2 teaspoons of file’. Add can of cut okra. Add shrimp and crawfish. Stir in and continue to stir frequently until shrimp and crawfish are done. about 5-7 minutes. Mixture contains rice and other ingredients needed. Dip into bowls and serve hot. Add hot sauce if desired.

Do Dry Soup Mixes Make Sense To Add To Your Food Storage

Soups can be a comforting and filling option for the average meal and especially in an emergency the warmth and the aroma can boost spirits.

Right now where Im at in my prepping journey, I would purchase pre-packaged soup mixes that include seasonings and also the ingredients to change them up or increase protein levels. This makes the most sense for me.

That might not make the most sense for you, though. You might want to just keep individual ingredients on hand, or whip up some of your own mixes to store. Or you may like to keep something unseasoned as a quick base for your recipes. You should do what works best for you.

Regardless of what you choose, it makes sense to have some way to make soup in your preps.

  • This product was NOT labeled Gluten Free
  • It was not certified Gluten Free
  • The product is not labeled gluten free. But the ingredient label does not mention any obvious gluten-containing ingredients. Therefore, we will expect it to contain less than 20 PPM of gluten to be considered gluten free

Based on the combined results of all tests, as of September 25, 2019:

  • Despite not being labeled gluten free, this product’s gluten content appears to be below 3 PPM
  • One Nima Sensor test has been performed. That test indicated the product was gluten free.
  • One GlutenTox Sticks Plus test has been performed. That test indicated the product contained less than 3 PPM of gluten.
  • Indications are that this product contains significantly less gluten than the generally accepted 20 PPM maximum gluten threshold, which is considered by many to be a safe level for consumption by most people who are sensitive to gluten.

These are just a few ideas to get you thinking how to customize dry soup mixes for improved flavor and increased calories and nutrients.

A Nice Inexpensive Addition To Your Prepper Pantry

Bear Creek Country Kitchens Cheddar Broccoli Soup Mix

I know some of you have probably already tried these soup mixes. But, today, I finally broke down and tried one for the first time. I tried the Cheddar Broccoli flavor, and, I found it to be pretty awesome! I also noticed that the best buy date is 2 years out , which would make the soups good for my prepper pantry! I don’t want to overload on them because I do have healthier foods stored away. However, these soup mixes would be a good filler for “those” times, you know, whatever “they” might be.

So, since I pack our emergency/survival meals up into individual servings, I thought I would test this bag of soup mix in the same way. So, what I did was put the dry soup mix into a dry bowl. Then I used a wire whisk to mix it well. Once it was mixed, I divided it into 8 separate single servings . I put the individual servings into plastic baggies . I just used zipper baggies because I will be using them up within a couple of months or so. If I were doing this for long term food storage, I would put the individual servings into mylar bags with O2 absorbers and seal the mylar bags.

I know there are going to be those who say that these soup mixes aren’t all that healthy. And, you’re probably right. But, as I said…as a filler they would be just fine it’s definitely not something I would recommend eating every day.

Easy Chicken Tortilla Soup

I love using the Bear Creek Soup mixes and adding whatever extra ingredients I can find in the cupboard or fridge.

1 pkg bear creek tortilla soup mix
1 c chopped onion
1 lb cooked chopped or shredded chicken
1 can black or pinto beans
1 can chopped tomato mexcian style or chili style
1 c thawed or canned corn
1/2 c fat free sour cream
1/2 c shredded low fat cheddar jack cheese
1/2 c crushed tortilla chips or nacho chips

Steps:

  • 1. Prepare soup mix according to package. Saute’ the chopped onion in 1 T of butter or olive oil. I like purple onion but you can use yellow or green onions as well.
  • 2. Add the canned tomatoes and the corn to the onion mix and heat through.
  • 3. Add the tomato/corn mix, the canned beans , and the cooked chicken to the soup base. Cook until all ingredients are heated through. Pour into bowls and top with the sour cream, cheese, and crushed chips.

Mighty Good Minestrone Soup

I bought a package of dry minestrone soup mix and didn’t care for the taste. This is my doctored up version and it is very good!

Provided by Chris L.

1 pkg bear creek minestroni dry soup mix
1 lb hamburger, cooked & drained
1 large yukon gold potato, peeled & diced small
1/8 c diced celery
1 can petite diced italian style tomatoes
1 can dark red kidney beans, rinsed & drained
1 sprinkle dried onions
1/4 c beef broth granules
other veggies if desired, shredded napa cabbage, frozen green beans, etc.

Steps:

  • 1. Bring 8 cups of water to a boil. Add diced potato and celery and cook until almost tender but still firm.
  • 2. Lower heat. Whisk in dry soup mix. Add remaining ingredients.
  • 3. Slow cook until pasta and veggies are tender.
  • 4. Serve with good crusty bread. You can sprinkle top of soup with shredded parmesan cheese too.

Most of these soups are pretty low in calories per serving. Thats a significant limitation. While it may be fine for the occasional lunch on an average day, in an emergency situation that isnt going to cut it. Youre going to have to beef up the calorie content. This is simple and easy to do with a bit of planning. Experiment with additions to the mixes to provide variety AND to increase the calories and nutrients. Then be sure to store those additional items as well.

The bean soup versions typically did well in protein, which is easily increased by adding your own meat, and fiber is decent. Unless its a cream soup, fats are a big fat zero or close to zero, and since fat is flavor, it makes sense that the seasoning packets are loaded with salt. Augason Farms has an eye-popping amount of sodium in their chicken noodle soup mix.

Therefore, you can increase their nutritional content by adding ingredients, but if seasonings are pre-mixed in the package, you cant remove something to make the soup healthier. So lets talk about ingredients now.
