Tips For Crunchy And Golden Grilled Cheese Sandwich

The Ultimate Grilled Cheese Sandwich and Tomato Soup Recipe

The perfect grilled cheese sandwich is when the outside has a golden, toasted, almost crispy crust that, when bitten in, results in softer bread and melted cheese in the middle. Here are some tips for making perfect grilled cheese sandwiches.

  • For a nice, golden crust, sliced white bread is the best to use on grilled cheese sandwiches. My favorite Island toasts are the Portofino European Bakery, or the Island Bakery premium white bread.
  • If youve baked your own white bread or purchased an unsliced loaf for a sandwich, cut it to the same thickness as the store-bought sliced white bread. If you cut too thickly, the cheese will take a long time to melt and youll overcook the bread.
  • Cover and coat the bread with butter to ensure that the entire slice turns golden brown as it bakes. Some people really like the toast to be toasted with mayonnaise instead of butter. That mayonnaise makes the bread yellow when its baked, but Im old and still prefer butter.
  • Cook the bread in a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Moderate heat will ensure that the outside of the bread slowly browns, while the cheese in the center has a chance to heat up and melt.

Add The Other Ingredients

Canned tomatoes Add in one can of whole tomatoes. I recommend buying organic if you can.

Chicken stock Add 36oz of chicken broth. Personally, I think homemade tastes so much better but store-bought will do too.

Salt, Pepper and sugar Salt and pepper to taste and add in your sugar.

Parmesan cheese Sprinkle in the parmesan cheese and stir everything together.

Roasted Tomato Soup And Grilled Cheese

Perfect sweater weather Roasted Tomato Soup and Grilled Cheese combination. Made with love and enjoyed with family.

This is probably one of my favorite soups to make. Its so easy and makes a big ole pot that you can enjoy for days of freeze. We prefer having lots of friends over and making it a night of it. Gathering around the table is one of my favorite things and traditions to have with my family. We often have friends over for dinner parties and this is the perfect way to enjoy some time together and eat some yummy soup.

A few years ago, we used to get together for soup nights with 6 couple friends and their kids. Whoever was hosting was in charge of making a soup or two and everyone else covered the salad, appetizers, dessert and drinks. How fun is that? We would rotate each month of who hosted the soup night and it was such a blast. This was one of my faves to make and share with our friends.

Dressing it up with some homemade grilled cheese takes it up a notch for sure. You can keep it healthy and enjoy it as is or make it sinful and serve it with the grilled cheese. the ball is in your court or should I say the BOWL is in your court hahah ok fine Ill stop.

The great thing about this soup is its vegan, gluten free if you dont do the grilled cheese on the side, Whole30 approved, paleo and all the healthy things out there. Make this soup for your family and let me know what you think in comments after. I hope they love it as much as we do.

How To Make Homemade Tomato Soup

  • Roast the tomatoes: Roasting the tomatoes with aromatics before blending into the soup builds serious flavor. Its a quick and easy step that means your soup goes from good to great. If you dont have access to ripe, in-season tomatoes, using whole canned tomatoes are perfectly fine. Flavor the soup with ingredients that compliment tomatoes. Balsamic vinegar, basil and garlic are always a good idea where tomatoes are concerned. A little sugar tempers the acidity of the tomatoes but is completely optional.
  • Make the soup: Cook onions, garlic and basil in a little olive oil or butter until soft and translucent. Add the roasted tomatoes to this base along with stock. Cook until all the ingredients are soft then transfer to a blender and blend until smooth . Season to taste with salt and black pepper and add cream. Bring back up to a simmer then serve hot with bread of your choice or grilled cheese sandwiches.

    Grate The Gouda Cheese

Start by choosing your cheese. It is a really important step in achieving a mouthing watering grilled cheese. You want to look for one that has a sharp flavor and is somewhat creamy so that it melts nicely.

In this recipe, I chose to use Gouda. It melts well and has a crowd-pleasing flavor. You can also use Monterey Jack, cheddar, or Havarti really there are so many choices! If you really wanted to you could go all American and do some American cheese, it does melt well.

Using the larger grating side of a box grater is the way to go so that you have bigger pieces that will melt easier than a slice of cheese.

I hope you all are recovering from Thanksgiving. I obviously ate way too much than I could actually handle and then had a second round of Thanksgiving leftovers on Friday where we had the most amazing turkey ham sandwiches with cranberry sauce and gravy-drenched boxed stuffing. Yeah, you heard right, boxed stuffing. We all devoured the chestnut-pancetta stuffing that was made for Thursday so we had to resort to Mrs. Cubbisons classic dressing. And surprisingly enough, the boxed ones are actually pretty good!

I am so grateful to be spending Thanksgiving with such an amazing family and to be surrounded by such awesome food. Although it saddens me that there are still many Hurricane Sandy victims left homeless on this holiday. With $50 billion in damages, the deaths of over a 100 people and thousands left homeless or without power, todays #SundaySupper is to lend a helping hand to those affected in the Northeast.

We were told to cook from our hearts and with that in mind, I couldnt help but make a huge batch of creamy tomato soup. Tomato soup brings such comfort, especially when some grilled cheese croutons are thrown in there. It has that soothing effect and definitely serves as the ultimate feel-good meal!

Eric Akis: Tomato Soup With Grilled Cheese A Match Made In Heaven

Like bacon and eggs and burgers and fries, grilled cheese sandwiches served with tomato soup is a classic and popular combination.

I was enjoying this classic combo recently and began to wonder who first served them together. I did some research and was surprised to learn that making a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup was first of all about creating a more balanced, healthy meal.

Food historians say humans have been eating cooked bread and cheese combinations for eons. But the North American-style grilled cheese sandwich is something that did not hit griddles until the 1920s.

According to the food history website foodtimeline.org, it was in that era that affordable, sliced white bread and inexpensive processed cheese hit the market in the United States. Not long after, folks were sandwiching them together and grilling them.

During the Second World War, grilled cheese sandwiches were noted in government-issued cookbooks, and U.S. navy cooks prepared them for their fellow sailors. They were easy to make, inexpensive and at that time met government nutrition standards.

After the war, standards were updated and in institutional foodservice situations, including school cafeterias, it was decided that, to make a more rounded meal, grilled cheese sandwiches had to be accompanied with something else. That something else became tomato soup, which provided a vitamin C component.

    • Add minced garlic and fresh sprigs of thyme stir for about a minute until fragrant.
    • Pour crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, tomato paste and chicken broth into the pot and stir. *I LOVE San Marzano tomatoes and really strongly recommend them for the tomatoes in this recipe.
    • Add sea salt, bay leaves, dried basil and sugar
    • Once soup begins to simmer, lower the heat and cover the pot . Let the soup simmer anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes occasionally stirring so nothing is left to burn at the bottom of the pot.

Tips For A Thick Tomato Soup

Let the soup simmer and reduce the water to thicken, but if you want a thicker result, mix 1-2 teaspoons of cornstarch with a few teaspoons of water and stir into soup. Leave on low heat until thickened.

Alternatively, you can add some cubed potatoes to the onions and let the onions cook completely. The mixed potatoes will thicken the soup without adding any thickeners.

    • Always freeze before adding ice cream. Let the mixed soup cool to room temperature. Transfer to a freezer-safe jar, box, or bag and seal. Freeze for up to 4 months. Thaw completely before adding cream and reheating.
    • This soup can be made 3 days in advance. Store chilled soup in the refrigerator and reheat over medium heat before serving.

    • Use sourdough bread or another type of artisan loaf or crusty bread. Great bread makes the sandwich!
    • Combine shredded smoked gouda and cheddar cheese. The hint of smoky cheese makes this sandwich taste incredible! Shredded cheese is great for a grilled cheese, because it makes the gooiest, meltiest interior .
    • Add a sweet element. Pairing sweet with the savory takes it to another level! Try tomato, fig or apricot jam, or a thinly sliced apple or pear.

Roger begins by making the tomato soup for dunking, but its potatoes, not tomatoes, that start things off. The spuds, when pureed, add dairy-free creaminess to the dish without feeling too heavy theres a lot of cheese on the way, after all.

An amazing tip here for roasted tomato soup flavour without spending the time roasting tomatoes, Roger uses smoky chipotle peppers in adobo, which lends great depth and a little kick. Finally, fresh tomatoes are stirred in to add brightness and umami punch. After simmering the vegetables until tender, its time to blend.

Post-blend, Roger strains the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve, creating that faux canned tomato soup vibe . A finishing dab of butter adds silkiness and brings out the natural sweetness of the tomatoes and onions. Basil, another time-honoured tomato soup partner, garnishes the bowl.

How To Make The Best Grilled Cheese Sandwich

I think its important that theres only very few elements from the grilled cheese, right? says Roger, who opts for minimal ingredients. Theres bread, theres butter, theres cheese. So whenever youre doing a recipe that has very limited ingredients like that, every ingredient really matters.

We know its tempting, but dont be stingy with the butter, its a core ingredient in the grilled cheese sandwich, making both quality and quantity count.

Butters are not created equal, and you get some really pale watered down butters and theyre not great, says Roger.

Irish and French butter is more expensive, but worth it here. While not absolutely necessary for the best grilled cheese sandwich ever, it certainly helps take it above and beyond.

Seasoning is also crucial and often skipped when making a grilled cheese sandwich.

Make sure you season the layers internally, says Roger. You season when you stuff it with the cheese. And on the outside, on the butter, you season it with salt and pepper as well.

For the bread, Roger reaches for sourdough because of its tangy taste. So theres a complexity of flavour in it, he says, noting that you should look for a loaf with nice aeration and a nice crust on the outside.

Medium-low heat is the temperature youre after on your stovetop griddle or skillet. This allows the cheese to melt slowly while the sourdough bread becomes golden brown, never burnt.

    Grilled Cheese Sandwiches 101

I know Ive made the perfect grilled cheese sandwich when the outside has a golden, toasted, almost crunchy crust that when bitten into, yields to more tender bread and a molten cheese middle. Here are some tips to make that kind of sandwich.

For a lovely, golden, toasted exterior, sliced white bread is the best type to use for grilled cheese sandwiches. The Island-baked breads I like to use are Portofino European Bakery white pan loaf, or Island Bakery premium white bread.

If youve baked your own white bread or bought an unsliced loaf to make the sandwich, cut it about the same thickness as store-bought sliced white bread. If you cut it too thick, it will take forever for the cheese to melt and you’ll over- toast the bread.

Evenly and generously coat the bread with butter to ensure that the whole slice turns golden brown when grilled. Some folks actually like to spread the side of the bread that will be grilled with mayonnaise instead of butter. That mayonnaise does turn the bread golden when grilled, but Im old school and still prefer to use butter.

Cook the sandwiches in a pan or griddle set over medium heat. This moderate temperature will ensure the outside of the bread slowly browns, while the cheese in the middle has a chance to heat up and melt.
