What Is Matzo And What Is It Made Of

Matzo, also sometimes spelled matzah or matza, is an unleavened bread made from flour and water. Its crunchy, very mildly flavored, and resembles a giant water cracker. The matzo we see in America is of the Ashkenazic tradition Sephardic matzo is softer and thicker. After the ingredients are mixed, no more than 18 minutes can pass before the dough is formed and baked. If the dough sits any longer, the matzo is not considered kosher for Passover. You may see flavored matzo, such as onion and everything bagel, at the market, but they arent appropriate for Passover. The Torah specifies that only matzo consisting of wheat, barley, oat, rye, or spelt flour and water should be used at a Seder, the ceremonial meal held at the beginning of Passover.

In New Orleans A Restaurateur Reinvents Bubbes Matzo Ball Soup

NEW ORLEANS There are certain foods that are so traditional, so charged with emotion, that it’s almost sacrilegious to toy with them. Matzo ball soup is one of these. But chef Alon Shaya feels no trepidation when it comes to turning something on its head. And in this case, that’s a good thing.

Shaya, the restaurant he opened 10 months ago, bills itself as serving modern Israeli food. When the traditional soup arrives at your table, the server pours a small white porcelain teapot of duck consomme over a bowl of slow-cooked duck pieces, chopped escarole leaves, dainty fresh herbs and, of course, matzo balls, which have just the right degree of fluffiness. Within moments, matzo ball soup is transported from your grandmother’s kitchen to a culinary temple. Or the bayou.

A wood-burning oven also plays a central role at Shaya, which is situated in a nondescript white storefront in the quiet residential neighborhood Uptown. Inside, the oven is an imposing domed structure covered in blue tiles that dominates an open prep station in the back of the dining room, a study in elegant and warehouse-chic minimalism with its exposed white-washed brick walls, blond-wood floors and furniture, and Art Deco-esque lighting fixtures.

The pita is engrossing, to be sure, but not enough to overshadow the elaborate hummus plates, artfully arranged with different components. Options include, but are not limited to, curried fried cauliflower and seared scallops .

Easy White Chicken Chili

boneless skinless chicken breasts, chopped medium onion, dicedchicken broth white beans frozen corncontainer of salsa, fresh or jarred fresh cilantrosalt

Toppings: Shredded Cheese , Sour Cream, Corn Chips or crushed Tortilla Chips, Cilantro, Lime Wedges

How to Make the White Chicken Chili

In a Dutch oven or heavy bottom over low heat, sauté onion and garlic in the olive oil until the onions are somewhat translucent. Add in the raw chopped chicken and cook until the chicken is cooked through.

Stir in the broth, salsa, beans, and corn, and a handful of cilantro bring to a boil and then reduce heat to low.

Season with salt and allow to cook on low until youre ready to serve and eat. I love soup that has plenty of time to simmer, so I typically let the soup cook on low for about 1 to 2 hours before serving.

Can you freeze white chicken chili?

One of the great things about making a big batch of chili is that you can freeze it! Sometimes Ill double this recipe when making it just to have the leftovers for another night of dinner.

Chili is a great dish to make ahead and freeze. Just be sure to store your soup in an airtight container before freezing. Just re-heat it on the stove top and youll have your favorite soup in no time!

What Does Matzo Symbolize

Matzo is eaten to commemorate the end of Jewish peoples enslavement and their subsequent exit from Egypt. The bread of affliction is a reminder of the haste in which the Jewish people left. Customarily, all of the chametz , or fermented or leavened grains, in the house must be removed for Passover, so matzo is eaten instead of leavened bread. Passover requires strict diet modifications for all foods, from packaged snacks and condiments to cooking oils. What is and what isnt considered kosher for Passover depends on regional and familial food traditions.

Easy White Chicken Chili Recipe

November 5, 2020 |

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Star Market. All opinions are 100% mine.

Of all of the chili recipes out there, this white chicken chili is our familys most loved. Not only is this healthy white chicken chili super flavorful and a total crowd-pleaser, its easy to make and is pretty much foolproof. And the resulting rich broth, tender chicken, hearty white beans and corn, plus a bright tang from the lime and cilantro, makes this soup a total winner.

For me, cold weather and soup go hand-on-hand. The temperatures start dropping and I dream about hot bowls of soup, cuddled up under a pile of blankets. I have a few favorite soup and chili recipes in my arsenal like my moms matzo ball soup, the easiest ramen noodle soup, and this healthier protein-packed classic tomato soup and I realized, one of my familys favorite recipes is one I have yet to share here on the blog.
