Amos House is an independent, non-denominational, non-profit agency offering resources that help individuals achieve greater stability and self-reliance in their lives through our food, shelter and social service programs. Amos House is the largest soup kitchen in Rhode Island, serving breakfast 5 days per week and a full course noontime lunch 6 days per week.
More than 600 meals are served daily. An additional 500 meals are prepared by our chef and culinary education students and sent to children’s after-school programs and overflow emergency shelters daily as well. Amos House provides safe transitional shelter to hundreds of homeless people annually and a host of social services including medical and eye care clinics. Volunteers are needed to help prepare, serve and clean up for breakfast and lunch. Volunteers are needed for the following hours: 6:30 – 8:30 a.m. for breakfast and 9:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m. for lunch, Monday through Saturday.

A House Of Hospitality For Those In Need
Amos House is a place without judgment, a place of nourishment for body and soul.Nearly 70,000 Rhode Islanders live in deep povertymaking less than $9,601 per year for a family of three. Many of these working poor are among the 500+ people who come to our dining hall each day for a hot meal.
In order to continue serving our community in 2020 amidst the COVID-19 crisis, we instituted a number of changes to our Soup Kitchen program, including:
- adding a temporary evening meal for the months of March, April, May, and June
- temporarily suspending our volunteer service program in order to reduce exposure in the kitchen
- creating multiple staff shifts to prevent cross contamination
- delivering meals to area emergency shelters and tent encampments

Loaves & Fishes Rhode Island Ten Months Thru October 2021

While for the most part our traditional canteen truck runs, directly serving our homeless brothers and sisters in need, has been suspended during the Covid 19 epidemic, we still put donations and grant funds to very good use. Our twelve member churches have been meeting the need in a host of other ways. Here is a summary of what we have been up to in the past ten months:
Vehicle Runs LFRI Twelve Member churches, with the help of many loyal volunteers, have conducted 150 drop delivery vehicle runs. This includes homeless shelters, soup kitchens and schools in Providence, Woonsocket and East Providence providing food, clothing and other essentials for distribution to their clients. This includes the following:
Adopt a School Program 26 of above runs were to middle schools in the East Providence area, providing food, clothing and books for needy school children.
Back Packs for the needy. Over 500 back packs containing food and other essentials were included.
Youth Center Deliveries. 8 Friday summer volunteer family lunch deliveries were made to youth centers in Providence.
Soups for the needy. In 13 of the above runs, we delivered 806 4lb frozen soup bags to some 10 homeless shelters and soup kitchens in Providence.

PAWTUCKET Amid closings, shutdowns and social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pawtucket Soup Kitchen has remained a constant, churning out meals for the homeless in huge numbers.
Were actually doing better than I thought, said Director Adrienne Marchetti. We made over 5,200 meals in April compared to 3,900 last April.
The need grew when places that normally provide food in conjunction with the soup kitchen shut down.
Weve taken on extra stuff doing dinner on Saturdays and Sundays, Marchetti said. And we distribute lunches Sunday through Friday in Pawtucket at 11:30 a.m.
Volunteers dont distribute lunch on Saturday because they hold a brunch. People who used to rely on getting food at Park Place Congregational Church on Saturdays found out after Easter that the church was no longer open. After hearing the news, Marchetti spread the word about meals being available at the soup kitchen.
We are trying to make sure everyone has a place to eat and doing our best to look for people, she said.
Donors have been quite generous in giving individual-sized snacks and other items, she said. The Soup Kitchen has also received some grants to supplement the food budget, which is out of whack, she said.
Despite having many more orders to place, Marchetti said their food supplier, Rumford-based Thomsen Foodservice, has been sensitive to their needs and done an excellent job of providing what is needed.

How Do Drive
There are lot of volunteers help at Drive-thru food pantries. While not all drive-thru pantries operate in the same way, here�s how most work:
Staff and volunteers direct visitors to the parking area.
Visitors pull up to the pantry in their car and are usually guided into a clearly marked queue. As people move through the pantry, staff will continue to move the cars forward to get everyone through as quickly and safely as possible.
Checkin.
You are required to fill some information for Pantry’s recording keeping.
Food is loaded into the cars.
Pre-packed bags of food, usually full of shelf-stable items like pasta, canned fruit and peanut butter, as well as fresh produce and meats are loaded by volunteers into the trunk of the car.

Who We Are
The creation of Love, Lauren was made possible by a longtime volunteer of Judys Kindness Kitchen, Lauren Smith. Lauren grew up with a passion for addressing widespread hunger. At a very young age she dreamt of establishing soup kitchens. In 2008, Laurens mother, Cindy, started bringing her and her brother to Judys once or twice a month. Theyd prepare soup, sandwiches, and snacks with a large group of people from all over RI. But the best part of all was when they brought the food over to Crossroads and personally handed it out to the folks there. On account of the special moments Lauren shared with these individuals, she realized that there is no greater way to make an impact than to see the joy it brings to someone other than yourself.In addition to recognizing the need through her time at Judys, Lauren has resided in Providence for most of her adult years she understands the ubiquitous food insecurity in her community. Given the difficult times were all experiencing now, it just felt right to take a stab at seeing her vision through.
