Easy French Onion Soup = Quick Caramelized Onions
It wouldnt be French Onion Soup without onions. I love the combination of yellow and red onions because it gives you the best of both worlds in terms of flavor. Plus, the red onions just look pretty when they caramelize.
Traditionally, caramelizing onions takes at least 45-60 minutes. Which is fine. But who wants to wait any longer than they have to for delicious soup? Not this girl! Heres my favorite hack for speeding up the caramelization process in this easy French Onion Soup:
Seasoning the onions with salt as they cook over medium-high heat adds flavor AND makes them sweat and caramelize faster. Just make sure youre using a pan with a tight fitting lid so the liquid doesnt evaporate too quickly. Stir the onions every couple of minutes so they cook evenly. Lower the heat to medium if you notice the onions browning too quickly.
If theyre still browning too quickly after lowering the heat, you can always try out the hack I use for caramelizing onions when I make In N Out Copycat Animal-Style Burgers.
The onions should look like this when youre done cooking them uncovered for about 15 minutes. The liquid will evaporate and create silky, soft onions.
Add your stock, soy sauce, red wine vinegar, herbs, and spices and simmer for an additional 15 minutes.

Then I made Popcorn Shrimp, by coating the shrimp in mayo to adhere the bread crumbs. This was a new recipe for me and I’m happy to report success. I’ve included directions to make the shrimp in either a standard oven or air fryer. The shrimp only took ¼ cup of my jar to make.
I decided the shrimp would go great with some Yum Yum Sauce. So, I made a nice big batch of the sauce/dip. It is also known as a shrimp dip, but it’s nice alternative dip for vegetables as well. The sauce took 1 and ½ cups of my mayo jar.
Peeking into the jar, there was still quite a bit of mayonnaise in there. I knew I had to make another dish pronto, before my daughter started making her famous mayonnaise sandwiches with it. Jalapeno Popper Dip was my deliciously addictive grande finale! I used a cup of mayo in that recipe. Now there was just a little left at the bottom of the jar and I decided to let my daughter slather it on her multigrain bread, as she loves to do.
Mission accomplished and a scrumptious food fest to show for it!

Is Onion Dip Low Carb
Before I was on a low carb diet I would make Onion Dip with sour cream and Lipton onion soup mix, a very popular way to make it. But I came to realize that the soup mix, although delicious, is full of high carb items. So I had to go to the drawing board and find something else that would be acceptable and delicious at the same time.
The nice thing is that there are no different ingredients needed to make Onion Dip low carb, it already is that way normally. What makes it low carb is that there are virtually no carbs in sour cream, and the scallions and spices have a minimum amount too.
After trying many varieties, this is the best French Onion Dip! It will compliment your low carb crackers or fresh veggie sticks like celery, or cucumbers or pepper strips.and the list goes on.
This easy recipe for homemade French Onion Dip is without all of the carbs from sugar and corn syrup and corn starchetc that is in the popular Lipton onion soup mix that is used a lot in onion dips. That means its guilt-free, so dig in!

French Onion Dip, or sour cream and onion dip, has always been a staple appetizer of so many picnics, parties and game days. Sometimes homemade, sometimes from a plastic tub at the store, but almost always at the party.
While I dont mind munching on the store bought variety, we all know homemade party dips are much betterand this French onion dip is so easy that it basically takes less work than going to the store for the already prepared kind!
This is a sour cream and onion dip using French onion soup mix. While you can use a store-bought packet, I highly recommend using a homemade mix. Its easy to make and keep on hand for recipes like this and usually more flavorful than a packet from the store.
The Worcestershire sauce is the secret ingredient in this French Onion Dip recipe. While I know of people who will whip this up using only the French onion soup mix and sour cream, I find that to be a little boring and by just adding a tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce. So much extra flavor is added.
This party dip literally takes 3 minutes to prepare its THAT easy! Just remember to prepare it a few hours before party time as it should refrigerate for 2-3 hours. If youre short on time, its also a great dip to put together the night before.
Kettle cooked potato chips are my go-to for party dips like this one because I love the crunch and subtle flavor but of course you can serve this French onion dip with your favorite chip.

Can I Use Mayo In This Recipe
Though they arent traditionally used to make onion dip, if you arent crazy about sour cream you could always use plain greek yogurt, cream cheese or mayo.
You can also make a combination of any of the above ingredients, including mixing them with sour cream and low-fat sour cream. You can even try mixing regular sour cream and low-fat sour cream if you are looking for good taste but also watching your calories.

California Onion Dip History
As the story goes, in 1954, two years after Lipton introduced its dry onion soup mix, a now-unknown housewife in Southern California stirred a dry soup packet into a pint of sour cream and made a savory potato chip dip.
Her recipe was reprinted in newspapers countless times, and by the end of the 1950s, it had become a house-party classic, perfectly suited for mid-20th-century Americas new style of informal entertaining on the patio or in the family room.
French onion dip is often served at parties and as a classic holiday party offering. It has also been described as an American classic. Try this dip as a spread on hamburgers, sandwiches, tacos, or top a baked potato.

What Goes Into Homemade Onion Soup And Dip Mix
I think youll be happy to learn that this soup and dip mix can be made with ingredients you probably have on hand in your kitchen cabinet and spice drawer.
Its a mix of beef bouillon combined with dried minced onion and onion powder, granulated garlic, parsley flakes, salt and pepper, a little sugar, celery seed and paprika. We also added corn starch which acts as a thickener in recipes, and it also helps prevent the mix from clumping together.

Directions To Make Spinach Dip:
Its really as simple as mixing all your ingredients in a large bowl until theyre well combined.
You can either serve this dip cold or heat it up in a 350 degree oven for about 20-25 minutes until its hot the whole way through.
I like to take a round loaf of bread and hollow out the center, fill it with dip and serve it that way. If you remove the center of the bread carefully enough, you can cube up the extra bread pieces as your dippers too! Tortilla chips also go well with this healthy spinach dip.
If you do serve it this way and want to heat it through, just cover the outside of the bread loaf with foil so it doesnt get hard and dried out.
- In a large bowl, mix all ingredients together until well combined.
- To serve: You can serve this dip cold and enjoy immediately.Or you can heat at 350 degrees for about 20-25 minutes until heated through.

Copycat Lipton French Onion Soup Mix
If you are concerned that youll need exactly the same amount as you would get in one packet, then just measure it. Then store in snack baggies instead. 3 Tbsp. should go into each one if you want to measure it out and store that way. That is easy enough to remember and you can save bags by just writing a note about this on the jar.
Whole reason to do this would be to save money and to save all that excess packaging. All those bags are not necessary and just ends up in a landfill so Tupperware works better because you can wash it when you need to make another batch of it.

Can You Use Low Fat Alternatives
A common question when there is a lot of mayonnaise, sour cream, or other fatty ingredients in a recipe is whether or not you can use some lower-fat alternatives.
While there are plenty of surprisingly decent low-fat mayonnaise and sour creams out there, this is not really one of those recipes that you want to try and save calories on.
If you are making a French onion dip, you are probably hosting a party or, at the very least, making a bit of a treat for yourself.
This means that you probably dont want to be making a sub-par dip imagine the shock and horror when other people taste the dip and discover it is low fat?
While this dip will obviously be a lot of calories and probably be more than your entire days amount of recommended fat, it is sometimes worth it to splurge a little bit and enjoy something that is a bit too rich and fatty.
If you are going to have this dip, enjoy it infrequently, but when you do make it, really try and enjoy it this means use the full-fat versions and just accept that might need to take it easier for the next few days when it comes to fat and calories.
Does Lipton Soup Mix Contain Msg
When you read a label looking for MSG you might be able to find it that easily, but it doesnt mean that its not in there. There is a whole list of ingredients out there that have MSG in them but have different names on the labels. Its kinda confusing so I added a link for you to check out that breaks down the different fancy names for MSG.
But yes, according to the label ingredients for the Lipton soup mix, it contains Disodium Guanylate and Disodium Inosinate which are 2 of the fancy names for MSG.

Homemade versions of store-bought staples can be really useful. Sometimes, the DIY version is healthier, cheaper, and/or allows you to swap out off-limits ingredients. Most times, they taste better too.
This copycat version of the well-known onion soup packets is something I often use in a super-easy, fall-apart-tender recipe for chuck roast.
While the sodium content in this recipe will be better than the name brand packet, bouillon is still high in sodium. Keep in mind that the following recipe makes the equivalent of 4½ packets. There are sodium-free beef bouillon options if this is a concernorganic options exist as well.
So if you have recipes tucked away for meatloaf, French onion dip, or your moms classic chicken and rice casserole that call for these pre-made packets, this might be reason to revisit them.
- ¾ cup dried minced onions
- cup beef bouillon powder
- 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ¼ teaspoon celery seeds
- ¼ teaspoon freshly ground pepper
- teaspoon paprika
- I use Herb-Ox granulated beef bouillon. If needed, Herb-Ox has a sodium-free option and organic options are available.
