Creamy Gluten Free And Dairy Free Tomato Soup
This Creamy Gluten Free and Dairy Free Tomato Soup is the perfect comfort food for those nights you need a quick meal. Some gluten free crackers or grilled cheese, and youre set!
As a child, my favourite soup was not one that my Mom had spent hours making, using herbs and vegetables that she had grown and harvested in her garden. Recipes passed down from her mother, who learned it from her mother. My favourite soup was tomato soup that came from the red and white tin.
Creamy tomato soup that perfectly paired with crisp salty crackers or a grilled cheese sandwich. Today, however, that red and white tin soup no longer loves me since wheat flour is the thickener used in that ready-in-5-minute soup.
That doesnt mean that I cant enjoy a quick, delicious bowl of soup. This vegan Tomato Soup actually starts with a can of tomatoes. Using whole ingredients, its also ready to eat in about 30 minutes.
In addition to being gluten free, this soup is also dairy free, getting its creaminess from the potato that is added to the mixture while it is cooking. But if you want to make it even creamier, you can add milk of your choice before serving. Coconut milk or cashew milk work great.
If you do not require a dairy-free diet, feel free to add 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream after blending the soup, just dont bring it back up to a boil once the cream has been added or it will curdle.

It is colder weather season and all I want to do is curl up with a good book and a nice warm bowl of this healthy creamy tomato soup. Well, that and maybe a grilled cheese sandwich to go with it.
I love this soup for its simplicity and smooth creamy texture without any added dairy. The creaminess comes from blended tomatoes with cooked onions, carrots, celery and garlic mixed with some coconut milk stirred in at the end. I added some vegan parmesan cheese and it melted perfectly on the top. So good!
We are also loving this creamy vegan asparagus soup that is also dairy free and super simple to make.

Which brings us to the recipe at hand.

What Kind Of Tomatoes Work Best In This Soup
For this recipe I use 3 lbs of tomatoes. Sometimes I like to use up the tomatoes I have on hand so I may mix medium sized tomatoes and cherry tomatoes. If you want to do something like that keep in mind that 15 20 cherry tomatoes equals about 1 lb and 3 medium tomatoes also equal 1 lb. So you could use 20 cherry tomatoes and 6 medium tomatoes or some combination that gets you to the 3 lb mark. Or just use a food scale to weight it all so you know you get it right.

How To Store Homemade Tomato Soup
This soup stores very well in the refrigerator and usually tastes best as leftovers in my opinion. Keep in an airtight container for up to 5 days in the fridge. Reheat using the stovetop or microwave.
You can freeze completely cooled homemade tomato soup for about 3 months. I usually use freezer bags to section out portions. I lay them flat so they can be stacked to save space in the freezer. Just make sure to label and date your freezer bag so you can keep track of them.

Dei Fratelli Condensed Tomato Soup And Three Bakers Bread
Its a two-for-one special here today on reviews, because what goes better with tomato soup than a grilled cheese sandwich?
Do you see that? Its a gluten-free CONDENSED tomato soup! Some of you might not think its a big deal, but I know some people that will be running-to-the-bathroom-crazy-excited. No, really.
I never really knew this because I grew up in a minimalist kind of family, at least when it came to food, but there is a whole population of people who dont know how to cook anything without a can of some kind of condensed soup. I clearly remember someone joining our local support group and saying that just about everything her mother taught her to cook involved condensed soup. She was so distraught because there were NO condensed gf soups at the time.
A few months ago , I received a sample of this, the first gluten-free condensed tomato soup on the market, from Dei Fratelli.
Corice said its really good! Its been a long time since I had any of Campbells soups, but it somewhat tastes like I sort of remember. In other words, I have no idea. However, it has a great, rich flavor and that smooth sipping goodness that makes you go mmmm.
Upon defrosting, the bread wasbread-like. Woot! Soft and pliable, not dry or crumbly. The Whole Grain White Bread tastes like white bread and holds together really well. All I could get from Carter was a Yum! as he stuffed his face with his grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup.
Is Tomato Soup Gluten Free
I mentioned before that canned tomato soup is generally not gluten free. The most popular canned tomato soup has wheat in it, likely used Of course, there are some brands that are gluten free.

What To Serve With Gluten Free Tomato Soup
With croutons: There are several gluten free brands where you can get store bought croutons. You can also make your own by chopping up gluten free bread and roasting it in the oven. Homemade croutons are best when you make them from stale bread, but you can still use the oven if you dont have old bread.
Gluten Free Grilled Cheese: Just use gluten free bread and your favorite cheese. Just a reminder, that any white cheese is better than orange in terms of being overly processed.
Salad: A simple salad goes great with tomato soup and is a good idea if you wanted to make a light lunch out of it.
Can I Use Dried Basil
I know fresh basil can be harder to find in the stores in the wintertime so you may want to substitute it for dried basil. I recommend using fresh basil for best results but according to this , the ratio is one tablespoon fresh herbs to one teaspoon dried herbs. So you should be able to substitute the ¾ cup fresh basil for 4 tablespoons of dried basil.
If fresh basil is hard to come by in your area, another option would be growing your own basil plant. I just recently started growing herbs indoors and it has been awesome to be able to pick my own herbs right from the plant. Its not only a money saver but also a great way to add herbs to dishes you might not otherwise have added.

How To Choose Gluten
When searching for your new favorite gluten-free soup, here are a couple things to keep in mind:
- Added sugar. Most pre-packed foods contain added sugars, and canned and packaged soups are not an exception. Take an extra look at the ingredient label to ensure youre not accidentally eating unexpected sugars, and consume in moderation to not exceed the daily AHA recommended value of 5-9 teaspoons a day .
- Sodium content. When it comes to canned and packaged soups, a lot of brands are loaded with salt. Processed soups account for one of several food groups that contribute up to half of the sodium consumed in the U.S. Many soup brands add high amounts of salt because its a cheaper way to add flavor than using whole fresh ingredients, despite increased risk of health problems like heart disease and stroke. The 20152020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that Americans consume less than 2,300 mg of sodium per day as a part of a healthy diet .
- Vitamins and nutrients. Pre-packaged soups arent just easy they can be a good source of vitamins and nutrients that support healthy body functions. Tomato soup, specifically, tends to be a good source of vitamin C, potassium, and other vitamins and antioxidants. Look for soups that are rich in essential nutrients to make the most out of your mealtime .
