Shark Tank Entrepreneur Pitches Soup Delivery Service
Spoonful of Comfort was the second pitch of the new season of Shark Tank. They came in asking for $400k for 10% equity in the business. They are a meal delivery services that will send out a large bottle of gourmet soup, fresh dinner rolls, and a box of cookies. Its enough to feed a whole family and sells for $69.99.
The founder of the company came up with this idea when her mother was diagnosed with cancer. Being thousands of miles away, she could not be there with her, but she wanted to send something that would bring comfort. As she sifted through all the flower, card, and candy delivery services, she just couldnt find anything that felt right. She remembered back to her childhood when her mother would make homemade chicken soup. After a long search, she could not find a single service that would send soup to a sick loved one. So she decided to fill that void.
I agree with Mark when he said that this is a marketing business. These people have just done a less than stellar job at marketing. After putting so much money into the business, they are still struggling to see enough sales to make sense of it and their customer acquisition cost is destroying their margins. As well, they saw early marketing failures when they underestimated the impact a coupon program would have on their bottom line.
Tom + Chee: Do The Math
Founders Drew Quackenbush and Corey Ward launched Tom + Chee, a grilled cheese and tomato soup concept, by investing $2,400 in a tent and a griddle, then setting up shop next to a Cincinnati skating rink. A year later, they had earned enough money to open one brick-and-mortar store in Cincinnati, offering unique items like a grilled cheese doughnut. Eventually, they opened a second store and sold one franchise, and gross annual sales climbed to $1.5 million. So when the duo came on Shark Tank, they could back up their pitch with some solid numberssomething the Sharks are understandably picky about. What Quackenbush and Ward wanted was an investment of $600,000 to expand the franchising side of the business. Shark Barbara Corcoran took the bait, offering the money and her expertise in scouting out real estate deals. Since the show aired in 2013, Tom + Chee has expanded to 19 locations and claims to have 170 stores under contract.

A Heartwarming Customer Story
My favorite story is still one from early on. There was a young girl 8 years old, the same age as my daughter at the time, who had a rare form of cancer. It required aggressive treatment and she had to have chemo once a week for nearly a year. A family friend of theirs had sent them one of our packages. Her mother emailed us letting us know that our soup was the only thing her daughter would eat. After going days without eating anything, she was asking for it for breakfast. After hearing that, we sent her soup every week for months. We had friends and neighbors step in wanting to help and took turns covering the costs. We are so pleased to say that she is cancer-free today and a vivacious teenager. What a gift for us to be able to contribute if even in the tiniest of ways to helping her feel better.

Will Sharks Want Soup
I almost want Souper Girl to not get a deal so I can hear one of the Sharks say NO SOUP FOR YOU!
Seriously though, I think they will do a deal with Mr. Wonderful if they can come to terms. Heres why:
Mr. Wonderful likes women run businesses and he tends to invest in them. Sara is not some wide-eyed wantrepreneur, shes the real deal. With mom Marilyn in there as a kicker, its a good team like the Wicked Good Cupcakes mother/daughter team.
The second reason this makes sense for both Souper Girl and Mr. Wonderful is existing infrastructure. Mr. Wonderful invested in Plated, a home meal kit delivery service. They have relationships with local food purveyors in different regions and they have centralized shipping facilities. All Sara would need to do is have a commercial kitchen strategically located near Plateds facilities and Mr. Wonderful could leverage both businesses.
Im betting on a deal with Mr. Wonderful.

Big Shakes Hot Chicken: The One That Got Away
Shawn Davis, who goes by the name Chef Big Shake, came on Shark Tank in 2011 looking for $200,000 to get his shrimp burgers into wider retail distribution. The Sharks passed on the deal, but deep-pocketed angel investors were watching the show and Daviss appearance generated interest and dollars. Gradually, he was able to get the shrimp burgers into 15 supermarket chains in 2,000 outlets across 26 states. Annual revenue hit $5 million, and Shark Mark Cuban admitted in an interview that passing on Chef Big Shake was a mistake. At the time, Davis wasnt thinking of launching a restaurant concept, but in 2014, he used some of his profits to open Big Shakes Hot Chicken in Franklin, Tenn.jumping in early on the Nashville hot chicken trend. Able to procure more venture capital, he aims to grow the fast-casual chain in 2017, although an indictment for tax evasion late in 2016 may hamper his plans.

How Her Appearance On The Tank Came About Through A Casting Agent
Our appearance on Shark Tank came about when we were called by a casting agent. I am a huge fan and was so shocked, I didnt believe it was real. Once I chatted with them and realized it was for real, my first response was no. I thought, There is no way I am going to put myself out there on national television to be chewed up and spit out by Mr. Wonderful. However, my husband talked me into it! So I talked my business partner into it and we moved forward with the process.

Cousins Maine Lobster: Practice Your Pitch
Maine natives and cousins Sabin Lomac and Jim Tselikis launched Cousins Maine Lobster as a single food truck in Los Angeles in 2012, serving lobster rollsa specialty along the New England coast. Authenticity and sustainability were the craveability points they pitched to the Sharks in 2013, including a direct connection to a Maine lobster supplier who could guarantee fresh product delivered to California within 24 hours. The pair watched all four seasons of Shark Tank to prepare and practiced fielding questions before they came on the showresulting in a $55,000 investment from Barbara Corcoran to expand their fleet of trucks. Corcorans marketing savvy and media connections helped spread the word, and the business took off. The company now has 20 trucks, including the newest in Nashville and San Antonio, and sales have reached $20 million, according to Cousins website. How The Idea Came About
It was October of 2007 when I received the dreaded call that my mother had been diagnosed with lung cancer. Of course, like anyone, I was shocked, scared and panicked. The hardest part about hearing the news is that she was living thousands of miles away at the time. I felt helpless being so far away. I needed to do something. So I jumped online, and there were tons of options for flowers, candy and fruit. But nothing felt appropriate for this situation. I wanted to show her how much I cared, and in some way comfort her. I immediately thought of chicken soup. Its what she, like many mothers, used to make to comfort me. But I couldnt find any to send. I lost her just six weeks later. Out of this tragedy, the idea for Spoonful of Comfort was born. I thought what better way to honor her than to help others in the same situation. To this day, its my promise to make and deliver each package with as much care as if I were sending it to my own mother.
Their Chicken Noodle Soup
Our signature Chicken Noodle is by far the bestseller. I dont think any flavor will ever compete with our Chicken Noodle soup and how it makes people feel. Our old-fashioned favorite is seasoned with roasted chicken, fresh thyme, parsley and oodles of noodles. Its so hearty and homey, youll never do dried ones again. Having said that, all of our soups are amazing. Our Tomato Basil comes in second! And we are launching a brand-new Cream of Mushroom next week.
