Game Day Mayo Jar Challenge
Hellmann’s Mayonnaise is made with cage-free eggs, is rich in Omega 3-ALA, and made with real, simple ingredients: eggs, oil and vinegar. That seems like great recipe inspiration to me and as I found out, a 30 ounce jar goes further than you might think.
30 ounces equals 3 and ¾ cups of mayonnaise. The Creamy Onion Dip used ½ a cup.
Then I made Popcorn Shrimp, by coating the shrimp in mayo to adhere the bread crumbs. This was a new recipe for me and I’m happy to report success. I’ve included directions to make the shrimp in either a standard oven or air fryer.;The shrimp only took ¼ cup of my jar to make.
I decided the shrimp would go great with some Yum Yum Sauce.; So, I made a nice big batch of the sauce/dip. It is also known as a shrimp dip, but it’s nice alternative dip for vegetables as well. The sauce took 1 and ½ cups of my mayo jar.
Peeking into the jar, there was still quite a bit of mayonnaise in there. I knew I had to make another dish pronto, before my daughter started making her famous mayonnaise sandwiches with it. Jalapeno Popper Dip was my deliciously addictive grande finale! I used a cup of mayo in that recipe. Now there was just a little left at the bottom of the jar and I decided to let my daughter slather it on her multigrain bread, as she loves to do.
Mission accomplished and a scrumptious food fest to show for it!
Super Natural Simple: Whole
She calls the mix French Onion Salt and deploys it first in a dead-simple breakfast strata recipe. Then she suggests sprinkling the mix over milk-washed biscuits before baking, or using it to top off a roasted sweet potato. I recently added about 1 tablespoon of the mix to the dough for savory hand pies that I then took along on a camping trip. Delicious.
Swansons recipe isnt an exact dupe for Lipton, but ½ cup of her French Onion Salt can be used as a substitute for a 1-ounce packet of dehydrated French onion soup mix. I made batches of dip with each to compare, purely for editorial reasons. Sour cream dip made with Lipton’s mix had richer, darker flavor. The one made with Swansons mix was brighter, and somehow more elegant. If Liptons dip was a robust winter onion, Swansons was a lithe spring onion. I could eat a whole batch of either in a single sitting. If you want to make a version with Swansons homemade mix thats closer to the Lipton standard, add a few dashes of Worcestershire or soy sauce when stirring everything together .
Or, if you want to go your own way, Swanson also suggests swapping out the dried chives for any other dried herb you love. Go thyme for an even more French feel or dried mint for something a little more zingy. Dill? Cilantro? Besobela? Really, whatever you like.
How To Make French Onion Dip
Got 5 minutes? Thats all you need to make this dip. Simply place all the ingredients in a bowl and whisk to combine. Make sure everything is well incorporated you dont want streaks of white from the sour cream, spots of brown from the beef paste, or clumps of seasoning.
Give it a taste and adjust the flavor, if necessary. Definitely taste with a chip. Most chips are pretty salty, so youll probably want the dip less salty than you think.

How To Make French Onion Dip From Scratch
Gather your ingredients and mix them in a small mixing bowl. That’s it! It’s simple, I know, but here’s the tip for the best French onion dip:
Cover and refrigerate your dip overnight. The flavors ‘marry’ and combine better after refrigerating. It totally makes sense, your dried onion takes in the moisture from the sour cream and releases the wonderful onion flavor!
In addition, all of the seasonings get a chance to release their flavors into the sour cream base as well.
Alternatives to sour cream that can be used include cream cheese, mayonnaise, and unflavored yogurt . All of these creamy bases will add their distinctive amount of tanginess to the dip. You can also combine any of these with sour cream or with each other to customize your onion dip flavors!
Great stir-in ideas include a touch of Dijon mustard or ground mustard powder, a splash of Worcestershire sauce, a pinch of paprika, some freshly squeezed lemon juice, fresh chopped chives, or a little bit of finely grated cheese.
Whichever base you use, or stir-ins you’d love to try, I promise that your party-going friends will devour this creamy onion dip! Or just snack with it on your own while curled up on the couch watching a movie! You can even enjoy my tangy French onion dip with some carrots and celery and call it diet food…

How To Save Even More
All of my recipes are affordable to begin with but there are some things you can do to make sure youre spending well. Here are some of the strategies you can;use to make this recipe more economical:
- Stock up on ingredients when they are on sale. When I find regular kitchen staples on sale, I buy a lot. Its a great way to save money on your groceries without clipping a single coupon. Im currently using a price book to track prices;and thats saving me money. For this recipe, keeping an eye on sour cream and bouillon base is key. When I see them on sale, I buy a few extra.
- Buy spices in bulk. Instead of paying a few dollars for a small jar of garlic powder or onion flakes, I buy larger container for even less!
Homemade Sour Cream And Onion Dip
Sour Cream and Onion Dip is a great appetizer to serve with chips and a Veggie Tray at holiday occasions, parties, and other get-togethers, but those mixes are just junk. Good thing you can make it homemade without any packaged soup mix!
With just four ingredients, this homemade onion dip is great paired with other appetizers such as Healthy Spinach Dip and Homemade Seven Layer Dip. Be sure to serve the leftovers on baked potatoesfor a fun topping.
Everyone loves a good dip. Am I right? Dips make football games more exiting. Dips make backyard BBQs more fun. Dips make the world go round. Too bad the commercial varieties are full of junk.
Thankfully you dont need a dip mix. You can make sour cream and onion dip homemade!

I attempted a recipe for corn tortillas and while they tasted pretty goodthey were NOT easy to make, they fell apart and looked ugly. Im going to keep working on that one until I come up with a corn tortilla recipe that doesnt take the whole afternoon to make. 🙂
This new recipe in The Challenge was super easy to put together! Vicki, one of our readers, sent me an Onion Soup Mix recipe to try and WOW is it simple! I tweaked it a teeny tiny bit, but really, this recipe is more Vickis than mine.
What I love about this recipe is that I didnt have to look high and low for the ingredients. Many onion soup recipes I found call for some sort of bouillon. Almost always, bouillon has MSG. There are MSG free bouillon varieties out there, but what if they arent easily accessible to you? And soI was very happy to see this recipe that contained just dried herbs and spices!
Is Onion Soup Mix Low Carb/keto
You can use onion soup mix when cooking if you are on a low carb or Keto diet, just make sure not to go overboard and use too much.
It has 3.4 NET Carbs per tablespoon to be exact. But dont be too alarmed because when you add it to your recipes you are probably only going to add a few tablespoons. And then when you divide that up in your whole recipe you really arent adding in many extra net carbs.;

How To Make Soup
One of the most common questions is how to make soup from dry onion soup mix. The process couldnt be simpler! If you want to make soup, add 4 cups boiling water or low sodium beef broth and allow to sit for 5 minutes.
Add caramelized onions, frozen veggies or even thinly sliced beef or chicken to make a whole meal.
Whats In Onion Soup Mix
The base for dry onion soup, sometimes called French Onion Soup Mix, is fairly basic. A blend of:
- Dry onion flakes
- Black pepper
- Fine sea salt
I prefer mine to be extra onion-y , so I use more onion flakes than the store bought version and also add black pepper. Look for a very finely ground black pepper to make the smoothest mix.
You can even go a step further and use garlic flakes instead of onion or use both!

Different Variations On Dry Onion Soup Mix
Obviously, you cant have onion soup mix without dried onion flakes and onion powder. And beef bouillon is going to a very important ingredient as well. But you can add a few other ingredients to my recipe as well.;
Salt is something that can be added.
Another ingredient that some like to add is ground celery seed. If you chose to add some celery seed you only need a small amount, maybe only about ½ tsp.;

Homemade Dry French Onion Dip Mix
Ill admit it. ;I actually like the Lipton onion mix stuff. ;You know, the stuff in the envelope that can be used to make soup or dip? ;Ive never used it to make soup but as a dip it tastes pretty good. ;Tear open the envelope, pour the contents into a bowl of sour cream, stir, refrigerate for 30 minutes, pull out a bag of your favorite potato chips, sit back and *crunch, munch, crunch.*
BUT you know how it is with most pre-prepared food items. ;The list of ingredients always includes strange things that really just dont belong there. So if you can make the same thing without all the junk that tastes just as good or better, plus is way cheaper to make yourself, why wouldnt you make it, right? ;Right!
Heres a copycat recipe version of the dry French onion dip mix you can throw together in 2 minutes and youll love the results.
And it also makes a;cute little gift idea.
Its as simple as combining a few dry ingredients together and then mixing it in with the sour cream. ;It only takes a couple of minutes to put together, but you can also make a few dried dip mixes in advance to have on hand when you need them. ;This recipe is the equivalent of one envelope of dried onion soup mix.
Lets get started!
Combine everything but the sour cream in a small bowl. ;I use msg-free beef broth granules.
Add the dip mix to the sour cream in a medium-sized bowl.
Stir to thoroughly combine and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, preferably an hour, before using.

And while I always prefer cooking from scratch when I can. Some of my favorite easy dips are olive tapenade and;hot onion dip made entirely from scratch, youre missing out there are many times when I;simply dont have time to make it from scratch.
And this French Onion Dip made with French Onion Soup Mix has saved me many times. MANY times!
Even though its made using a French Onion Soup Mix, my twisted logic tells me that because I didnt buy it in a tub from the store, it is semi home-made.
And I can absolutely promise you, it is BETTER than store bought because its creamier. So many French Onion Dips sold at stores are rock hard when cold so the chips break when you try to scoop up dip. This French Onion Dip is soft even straight from the fridge no more broken chips!
There are versions of this made with just sour cream and French Onion Soup Mix. But I really feel that the addition of mayonnaise makes a huge difference adds richness and more layers of flavor.
Give this a try! I promise you will LOVE it. Seriously tastes just like store bought!
