How Much Sodium Is In Low

A food can be technically considered low sodium if it has less than 140 mg of sodium per serving according to the Food and Drug Administration.

If a client who is restricting sodium chooses a canned soup that contains less than 20 percent of the FDAs 2,300-milligram sodium limit, I am happy with that, says registered dietitian nutritionist Brittany Scanniello, RDN.

She encourages clients to stick to a maximum of 460 milligrams of sodium per serving while choosing varieties that include ingredients that support heart health like beans and vegetables.

If you are managing your sodium intake and are looking for the best canned or pre-made soups, read on to find the 14 dietitian-approved top picks for low-sodium soup.

How Does Amys Light Sodium Lentil Vegetable Soup Taste

I heated this soup up in the microwave and had it for lunch.

I loved the flavor of the soup and on many levels it tasted similar to Amys Vegetable Barley Soup. There was a sweetness from the onions and carrots which balanced out by the earthiness of the lentils. It was nice to have all of the different colors and textures as it kept the meal interesting.

The flavor was just a little flat and I write that off as due to the low sodium content.

While the soup was good as it was straight from the can, it became completely delightful when I added a shot of Trader Joes Green Dragon Hot Sauce. The vinegar from the hot sauce brightened all of the other flavors and the lentils were awesome with the extra kick of heat!

Light In Sodium Lentil

Sadly, my first thought was, hmm, needs salt. Resisting the urge I reached for the pepper grinder instead. Both Tony and I thought this was a good move. While I often find Amys Chili a bit too spicy, this soup was on the bland side and lacked zing. Even after the peppering, the soup was still shouting for an additional herb or spice, but I couldnt quite make out which one. Cumin? Paprika? Rosemary? Perhaps some future experimentation will tell. Beyond the flavor, I liked the heartiness of this soup. Rich with lentils, and light on liquid, I could easily fill up on a whole can. But instead, I served it over brown rice, making a little lunchtime meal for two.

The Gold Standard In Organic Food Since 1987

Amy

Amys Kitchen is one of the first companies to make organic, healthy food popular and accessible. They use sustainably-harvested, organic, and non-GMO ingredients for their ready-made meals, soups, and sauces. Why? Because its not only better for people, its far kinder to our planet. Amys sources from local California farms whenever possible to support the community and keep their carbon footprint low. Plus, they were one of the first to use BPA-free, recyclable aluminum cans for their products. These common practices are only common because of Amys. In fact, the USDA looked to Amys when they were setting organic and environmental standards.

  • recyclable packaging

One of the first companies to use recyclable cans without BPA lining, you might say Amys is the gold standard in sustainable packaging.

  • responsible sourcing

The ingredients in Amys products are sourced from local organic farms when possible. Their meals are always vegetarian because eating and farming meat has major environmental consequences.

Other Reviews From Target Customers

Great Diet Meal- Amy’s Lentil Soup | EpicReviewsHealth Binaural

Lets take a look at what other customers think about this soup.

When I checked out the reviews for this soup on Targets website saw that there were just a few number of reviews and 85% of them were 5 Stars.

There were also a few reviewers, 10%, who really disliked this soup and left it a 1 Star review.

Some of the positive comments reviewers left include:

  • The best. We love this soup. Its so easy to make and tastes great. Loaded with veggies and perfect with grilled cheese!
  • If your expecting a super salted and wildly seasoned soup, this just isnt for you. BUT. If you like soup that tastes like it was made at home, with love, not too much salt, and alot of hearty vegetables, this is for you.

Some of the negative comments reviewers left include:

  • Youd think a soup called Lentil Vegetable would have lentil as its first ingredient. Wrong. First ingredient is ONION. And since onions naturally have such a strong flavor, when you taste this, it tastes like onion soup with a touch of lentil, which is simply absurd.
  • I normally do not go out of my way to review food products but this soup is so bad I felt compelled to share my experience. It tastes like someone chopped vegetables, mixed them with lentils and water and called it soup. Completely devoid of flavor. Im all for healthy eating but whats wrong with a little seasoning???

Do Canned Soups Have A Ton Of Sodium

Canned soup has gotten a bad rap over the years, namely for its high sodium content. But there were reasons for all that salt initially, the first being preservation. Canned foods are better preserved in a salty or sweet medium. However, vacuum packing has eliminated the need for sodium as the sole mineral to inhibit bacterial growth. explains Stoler. The second reason is to please the typical Americans palate, which tends to prefer saltier foods.

But the most interesting tidbit of all? Despite Americans concerns over high-sodium soups, food companies had significant trouble getting low-sodium soups off the shelves. An industry secret is that most larger companies have reduced their sodium content over the years without notifying consumers, says Stoler. When canned soups were labeled as low or no sodium, they didnt sell well because consumers assumed the taste would be compromised.

Nowadays, there are tons of low-sodium soups on the market, many of them legitimately delicious. But if youre worried that a low-sodium soup will have less flavor, remember that you can always add your own ingredients to prepare it more to your liking. The truth is, if someone wants more salt, they can always add it. If a soup is too salty, add more water. Its really that simple, says Stoler.

Here are 18 healthy canned soups to look for the next time youre grocery shopping.

Guidelines For Sodium Consumption

The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that we should not exceed 2,300 mg of dietary sodium each day.

Despite these recommendations, only 10% of Americans actually stay below this limit.

One study published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that the average daily sodium consumption in America is around 3,850 mg and this can have a lot of negative impacts on our physical health.

In particular, regularly exceeding the recommended amount of dietary sodium is closely linked to heart disease, high blood pressure, and chronic kidney disease . On the other hand, decreasing sodium consumption has been shown to lower blood pressure and improve kidney function.

Family Owned Fiercely Independent

After the birth of our daughter Amy in 1987, we started Amyâs Kitchen to produce delicious, nourishing organic convenience foods for health-conscious people who are sometimes too busy to cook. Amyâs is a family-run business, and we supervise every aspect of our business. All the fruits, vegetables and grains we use are grown organically, without the use of insecticides, GMOs and other harmful chemicals. We prepare these natural ingredients with the same careful attention in our kitchen as you would in your own home.

We were organic before it was a national certification. So when the U.S. Department of Agriculture decided to create standards for organic, they looked to us for guidance. Together with other industry leaders, we helped pioneer the organic food industry and, more importantly, we helped make organic food available to more people.
