If you need to remain on a liquid diet for a longer duration, but a clear liquid diet is no longer necessary, your healthcare provider may advance you to a full liquid diet. Full liquids are those that you can’t see through, like milk, nectars, cream soups, and melted ice cream and sherbet.

Full liquids require a bit more work to digest and they do contribute some residue to your colon. A full liquid diet is still low in calories and nutrients, but not as low as a clear liquid diet. It also provides more variety and is higher in protein. It’s considered a bridge between a liquid diet and a soft or puréed foods diet.

Do not change to a full liquid diet without your healthcare provider’s OK.

What To Eat During A Flare

All of the diets above are intended to be temporary and followed during a flare-up. Working with a dietitian can help prevent deficiencies in certain micronutrients, which is common with IBD.

During a flare its helpful to eat four to six small meals per day rather than fewer larger meals. Its also very important to drink fluids because diarrhea can occur with a flare and cause dehydration.

Considerations For General Nutrition

The clear liquid diet does not adhere to the 20202025 USDA Dietary Guidelines from the Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture it will not meet your nutritional needs. You should advance your diet to full liquids, a puréed or soft diet, or a regular diet as soon as you’re cleared to do so.

If you need to follow the diet for more than a few days, your healthcare provider may recommend adding additional supplements or high-protein gelatin to boost your caloric and nutrient intake.

Leftover Roast Chicken Soup

  • 2 carrots, peeled and cubed
  • 1 cup butternut squash, peeled and cubed
  • 1 small sweet potato, peeled and cubed*
  • ½ yellow onion, quartered
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 4 cups chicken stock, store-bought or homemade
  • 2-3 cups leftover shredded chicken or 1 pound uncooked chicken breasts
  • ¾ teaspoon dried parsley

Directions:

  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
  • Toss the vegetables in the olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast for 20 minutes, until the vegetables are tender.
  • Meanwhile, bring the chicken stock to a simmer in a large stockpot. Add the chicken, herbs, and salt and pepper. Cover and cook while the vegetables are roasting, about 15 minutes. For raw chicken breasts, cook for about 45 minutes, until chicken is cooked through and tender enough to shred with a fork.
  • Add half the vegetables to the soup, and place the other half in a blender. Make sure to put all of the onions quarters into the blender. Puree the vegetables with the 1 cup of water.
  • Add the vegetable puree and baby spinach to the soup. Simmer for 5-10 minutes, until the spinach is wilted and the soup is hot. Adjust seasonings to your taste.

    When you have a gastrointestinal issue like UC, you cant rely on restaurants and takeout counters to have foods that suit your needs. Many restaurants use a lot of butter to make their food taste so good.

    Thats why you may want to do more cooking at home using fresh foods if possible, not prepared stuff packed with preservatives.

    Some people with UC find that eating four to six small meals instead of three large ones keeps their guts happier, which means youve got more dishes to plan than ever.

    Pick up some meal-prep habits if you havent yet. Those include planning bigger meals in a slow cooker or making staples like baked chicken, starches, or roasted veggies that you can mix and match for the rest of the week.

    While youre shopping for the week ahead, pick up some of the staples youll need during a flare-up, too. That way you can skip going to the store when youre under the weather.

    So much research still needs to be done to find the ideal combination of foods that will keep IBD in remission, but you can work with a gastroenterologist or registered dietitian to find what works for you.

    That may require a lot of trial and error, so be patient with yourself.

    Ingredients

    • One 3 lb butternut squash, peeled and seeded
    • 2 tbsp olive oil or unsalted butter
    • 1 medium onion, chopped
    • 6 cups chicken or veggie stock
    • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
    • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
    • 1/2 cup Greek yogurt for garnish

    Preparation

  • Cut squash into 1-inch chunks.
  • In a large pot, heat olive oil or butter. Add onion and cook until translucent, about 8 minutes. Add squash and stock. Bring to a simmer and cook until squash is tender, about 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Using an immersion blender, puree ingredients in the pot until smooth. Alternatively, cool soup slightly and place in a regular blender. Stir and season with nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Serve with optional garnish of Greek yogurt.

    Breakfast To Control Diarrhea And Cramping

    A low-fiber and low-residue diet eases bouts of diarrhea and abdominal cramping associated with ulcerative colitis. Follow this type of diet for the short term and after physician consultation, because it restricts your nutrition intake. Breakfast may include 1/2 cup of apple juice, one scrambled egg with one slice of toasted white bread and a side of plain grits. Plain hot or cold cereal can replace grits, and you may add one slice of cheese to the eggs if you can tolerate dairy. Choose cranberry juice or strained and pulp-free orange juice as an alternative to apple juice. Top the toast with margarine or low-sugar jelly.

    Limit foods high in saturated fats because these increase the amount of waste passing through your colon. Choose well-cooked or tender cuts of meat and nonfat or low-fat dairy as tolerated. Lunch may include a tuna sandwich with an iceberg lettuce slice on white bread, 1/2 cup of cooked carrots on the side and a medium banana. Add a cup of low-fat milk or fruit juice to complete the meal. Instead of bread, wrap the tuna in a white grain pita or tortilla and opt for steamed salmon or flounder as a fish alternative. Use herbs, pepper or plain gravy instead of salt to flavor foods.

    Instead, Kennedy suggests pretzels made with white flour. Avoid whole-wheat and seasoned varieties, and Look for pretzels with salt if you have active diarrhea, which can help replace lost sodium, Kennedy says.

Your protein needs are higher with IBD especially in a flare state, she says. Then add fruits that are peeled, but don’t use fruits with seeds. Try bananas, peaches, mango, papaya, and melons. She also recommends adding smooth nut butters for nutrients and flavor. Vanilla extract and cocoa powder are some other flavorful options to include. Make sure you blend the ingredients until very smooth so that your drink is easier to digest.
