You may have been prescribed what is called a phosphate or phosphorus binder. This is a medication that is intended to prevent the absorption of phosphates into your bloodstream.
Too much phosphorus is very harmful to the body over long periods of time and can lead to issues such as vascular calcification , skin breakdown, joint pain and damage, bone damage, and higher risks of heart attack, stroke and death.
If your doctor has prescribed phosphorus binders to you, be sure to take them as prescribed. They are most effective when taken at the beginning of your meal. If you struggle with phosphorus control, you may need to discuss a dose adjustment with your nephrologist or dietitian, especially when it comes to eating fast food.
Always discuss medication changes with your prescribing physician.
Hearty Chicken Noodle Soup
A home-cooked favorite, this savory chicken noodle soup is perfect for rainy, windy days.
In a 4-quart heavy-bottomed pot, heat oil over medium-high heat for 1 minute, then add cubed chicken breast and brown lightly.
Add all vegetables and spices and cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring frequently.
Add water, broth and lemon juice to pot.
Cover, turn to high heat and bring to a boil, about 2 minutes.
Reduce heat and let simmer for 20 minutes.

What Are The Ways To Make A Kidney
If you have diabetes along with kidney disease, you need to control your blood sugar to prevent more damage to your kidneys. A diabetic diet and a kidney-friendly diet share a lot of the same food items, but there are some important differences. There are some ways your kidney-friendly diet and diabetic diet can work together. Below are a few food items that are good for you, if youre diagnosed with both diabetes and kidney disease.
- Fruits: Berries, papaya, cherries, apples and plums
- Vegetables: Cauliflower, onions and spinach
- Proteins: Lean meats , eggs and unsalted seafood

Ready-to-eat snack foods like pretzels, chips, and crackers tend to be lacking in nutrients and relatively high in salt.
Also, its easy to eat more than the recommended portion size of these foods, often leading to even greater salt intake than intended.
Whats more, if chips are made from potatoes, theyll contain a significant amount of potassium as well.
Pretzels, chips, and crackers are easily consumed in large portions and tend to contain high amounts of salt. Additionally, chips made from potatoes provide a considerable amount of potassium.

Todays video gives you a whole new idea on how to make your own soups that are also kidney-friendly. Now that the winter months are here, many people love to stay warm and healthy with a bowl of soup. Robert shares a soup recipe today and shows how it can be kidney-friendly and low sodium.
Adding many nutritious vegetables to your soup is another great way to consume vegetables on a renal diet. This quick and easy-to-make soup recipe is something you might want to try out at home.
In his soup recipe, Robert explains all the stuff going into it and what you should look out for. This recipe takes about half an hour. When choosing the broth, always stick to a low sodium or no-salt option. The chicken broth shown in the video contained 200mg of sodium, and that gets divided depending on how big your serving bowl is.
Firstly, youd put the broth into the pot and let it heat for a while. Next, you add the vegetables into the soup, and to spice things up, you can always sauté your vegetables before adding them. Some kidney-friendly vegetables that go well with the soup are cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, celery sticks, etc.
After half an hour, check if your vegetables have cooked thoroughly. To make sure, insert a fork into the vegetables and check if it goes through. You can enjoy them crunchy or tender, depending on your preference.

However, just like this information here, the exact phosphorus load will not be available as it is not required to be calculated by restaurants.

How To Eat It
Eat the soup in small sips throughout the day, at room temperature if possible. If you like, you can add a little bit of lemon juice to it.
Its highly recommended that you consume at least two glasses of onion soup on an empty stomach at least half an hour before breakfast. Try to consume the soup every day before midday so you dont have to go to the bathroom at night.
Potassium Is Still Unclear In Fast Food
Luckily, potassium may be a bit easier to find. This should especially be the case more so since 2016, when the FDA required potassium content to be listed. However, this requirement has yet to be enforced and may still take time to become more obvious on food and nutrition labels.
However, potassium additives are now becoming a more prevalent issue with kidney disease, and of course are just as difficult to find obviously labeled.
You can use the steps noted above for finding phosphate additives to also find potassium additives. Just search for potassium instead of phos.
But I will add that potassium is likely not an issue for many with CKD, in fact, you may or may not need to limit your potassium.
If you are already struggling with these issues, I dont recommend you look even for fast foods that are okay for kidney disease. Because ultimately, theyre not if your labs and health conditions are not well-managed.

Phosphate Additives In Fast Food
Arguably one of the most challenging parts of a renal diet and fast food is determining the amount of phosphorus. Finding low phosphorus fast food is difficult nearly impossible.
If your phosphorus levels are already trending above 3.5 mg/dL, you are at a higher risk of further damaging your kidneys and increasing risk of death.
Phosphorus is not a required nutrient to be listed on the nutrition label, although evidence suggests that it may be beneficial to the public for manufacturers to include phosphate information on their nutrition facts.
How to find phosphorus additives online
If you are curious about finding phosphate additives in foods at a restaurant, here are the steps you will need to take:
Beans And Peas In Your Kidney Diet
Eating beans and peas was never smooth sailing for my patients on dialysis because of the high phosphorus and potassium content. Most of them grew up eating a variety of legumes as part of their regular meals. Yet it is quite unimaginable for some patients to avoid beans and peas completely. And why should they? Half a cup of beans provide protein, from 6 to 15 grams, and 4 to 9 grams of fiber. Because getting enough fiber in the kidney diet is a challenge for most people on dialysis, this source cant be ignored completely.

Garlic For Kidney Health
If you are suffering from CKD you can benefit from garlic in your diet.
- Garlic contains diuretic properties. It helps in the elimination of salt/sodium and water from the body, helping the kidneys to flush out more sodium through urine.
- When kidney vessels are damaged, they are not able to filter the water from the blood on their own.
- Salt absorbs water from the blood and reduces the fluids in the blood vessels, thereby decreasing pressure on the arteries.

Tip: Since dialysis patients cannot take salt, they can use garlic to flavor food as a substitute!

Asparagus Improves Kidney Function
Asparagus was considered the perfect solution for curing urinary problems in Europe and Asia, its native countries. Asparagus is among the top foods good for kidneys.
- It contains glycosides as well as saponins, which are diuretic and purify the blood by removing toxins.
- Regular consumption of asparagus will lead to increased production of urine and it soothes the urinary system, enhancing the cellular activities in the kidneys, dissolving acids, salts in kidneys that can cause kidney stones.
- The hydroxynicotianamine present in asparagus can help prevent hypertension and improve kidney function.
How To Make Onion Soup
To make onion soup, boil one onion per liter of water. As an option, you can add parsley sprigs along with the onions, which will also help cleanse your kidneys deeply.
Drink the soup made with two liters of water and two onions every day. You can make more and store it in the fridge for a maximum of two to three days.

Kidney Friendly Options At Starbucks
Stick to the cows milk or almond milk. Oat and coconut milk options have phosphate additives, as shown in the image above. Soy is difficult to find and may vary store-to-store.
The cafe mocha has no potassium or phosphate additives . Vanilla and classic syrups have potassium additives but no phosphate so could be acceptable in small quantities.
If you need breakfast to go along with it, the Spinach, Feta, and Egg White Wrap is a decent choice with no additives. Beware the sodium content, however, as it clocks in at 830milligrams.
The Sprouted Grain Vegan Bagel will give you 12 grams of protein and 7 grams of fiber along with 490 milligrams of sodium for 330 calories. Having some cream cheese, which is lower in phosphorus and potassium is acceptable.
In fact, the majority of their hot bakery items do not have phosphates included, with the exception of their smoked bacon.
Need lunch? The Tomato and Mozzarella sandwich should do, with 580 milligrams sodium and 15 grams of protein .
The Prosnax Green Apples, Egg, Mild Cheddar Cheese, and Cashews Snack Box may be a better option at 250 milligrams sodium and 13 grams protein for 320 calories.
Bakery sweets are not recommended due to the low nutrition value and high sugar, saturated fat, and often times sodium content.
Red Grapes Top Food For Kidney Repair
A Tunisian report states that grape seed and skin could actually reverse damage to the kidneys.
- It can reverse damage caused due to a high fat diet, which is one of the leading causes.
- Grapes have a high concentration of antioxidants, which reduce oxidative stress and neutralize free radicals.
- Red grapes flush out uric acid and other waste products in the kidney, acting as a natural kidney cleanse.
Tip: Consume about 15 grapes a day for maintaining a good kidney health.

Learning to eat well with chronic kidney disease can seem complicated, but it can actually be quite simple when streamlined to focus on the most important changes that can help keep the kidneys working well. The four areas to focus on when making diet modifications are in eating the right amount of protein, phosphorus, sodium, and potassium. Eating well with chronic kidney disease can be easily combined with any other dietary needs such as eating for diabetes or heart disease, because the foundation of the diet is the same: eat a variety of healthy foods that are simply prepared and wholesome. Track your nutrient intake for a few days to see how your intake of protein, phosphorus, sodium, and potassium measures up to the recommended amount for CKD listed below.
Foods high in phosphorus include meat, dairy, nuts, seeds, beans, peas, chocolate, whole grains, oatmeal, dark cola, and bottled iced tea. Choose small portions of high phosphorus foods, and try not to eat more than two or three portions of high phosphorus foods in one day. Choose low phosphorus drinks and avoid dark colas and bottled tea.

Healthy Diet Tips For People With Diabetes And Kidney Disease
Although everyone is different, below are some general tips for eating well with diabetes and kidney disease. Consider the following:
- Eat small portions of lean protein. If you eat too much protein, it can make your kidneys work harder. But you do need some protein for your body to function properly. Good sources of protein include eggs, chicken, and fish.
- Stay away from salt. Instead, season food with herbs and spices. Too much salt can increase blood pressure and potential kidney damage.
- Read food labels. Check for the amount of sodium and sugar in foods to keep from overdoing it.
Switch to fruits and vegetables with lower levels of potassium. Your doctor may tell you to limit certain fruits and vegetables that contain a high amount of potassium. For example, berries and apples have lower potassium than oranges and bananas.
Avoid foods with empty calories. High calories foods that provide little nutritional value, such as soda, chips, and ice cream, should be kept to a minimum.
Limit alcohol, as too much alcohol can damage the liver, heart, and kidneys. Certain alcoholic drinks are also high in sugar and can increase glucose levels in the body.

Kidney Friendly Coffee Shops
When choosing a fancy coffee order, keeping to the small cup size is a great way to enjoy while not overdoing it. You still get 12 ounces of your beverage but wont have to push away a cup of water at your next meal.
Of course, black coffee is best .
Choose sugar-free syrups if you need a sweetened drink. Not a fan of sugar-free? Try half sugar-free, half regular. A venti sweetened black coffee will set a woman over her daily allowance of added sugars. Also, skip the whip for even less sugar and saturated fat.

To identify if a menu item has additives, you need to individually select that option and then review the ingredients. You can still do control + F search on that web page to make it a bit quicker.
