This blog post originally appeared September 3, 2018. It has been updated for clarification and new photos.

I made these bowl cozies for each of our children a few years ago for Christmas. Through the years, weve been gravitating towards more handmade or homemade gifts for Christmas. We really try to make the holidays more about memories and time with family than about the gifts under the tree. This year, our Christmas gift giving was almost 100% handmade gifts.

The bowl cozies were a big hit. In fact, my husband loves the bowl cozy and literally uses it daily. When I prepare the Rice Sides for him, I usually make them on the stovetop, but even so, the bowl gets pretty hot! Then theres ice cream. My Corelle dishes get pretty cold when filled with ice cream. The bowl cozy is perfect for bowls of ice cream!

Step : Transfer Pattern Markings

Place the pattern on top of the batting side of the fabric. Draw out the darts onto the batting with a washable pen or sewist chalk.

Transfer the pattern markings on each set of fabrics. First transfer the darts onto the batting, then fold the paper pattern diagonally and transfer the first diagonal marking. Unfold and fold the opposite site, transfer the other diagonal marking. Repeat for the second set of fabrics.

If you dont want to fold your pattern or find it a bit tricky, you can just draw a line across the fabric, connecting the two opposite corners. Draw a second line between the other two corners. You should have an X mark going through the middle of the fabric.

Step : Finish The Diy Bowl Cozy

The only work that remains now is to add the finishing touches to the bowl cozy.

Turn the entire thing inside-out through the opening you left unstitched. Then fold the opening inward until its aligned with the rest of the seam, pin it and press it flat.

Topstitch along the top edge of the bowl cozy all around. This will close the opening shut in the process.

The bowl cozy is now ready for use! No more burned hands for you!

Step : Join The Pieces Together

Now you are going to sew the two fabric pieces together to form the bowl cozy.

Take one of the pieces and turn it inside-out so that the main fabric is facing outward.

Then place one bowl cozy piece into the other. Make sure that their right sides are facing each other. Tuck them well and align their edges, as well as their darts. Pin around and leave a 2 inch gap for turning. Mark the gap with double pins/clips/

Sew the two pieces together along the top edge with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Dont sew along the entire edge, remember to leave those two inches unstitched to turn the bowl through.

You can clip the corners at this point, especially if you decided to make the square variant of the bowl cozy.

Weve all heard the waiters common admonition, Careful! The plate is hot! At which point, we instinctively reach out to touch the plate because we just cant help ourselves! Hot dishes happen at home as well, and theres usually no waiters to warn you about them. Instead, use our soup bowl cozy to protect yourself. Made with all natural fibers, it can go right into the microwave. So, even though they always tell us only the food should heat up in the micro, we know that is not always the case. Say goodbye to too hot to handle with our cute cozies. But wait theres more. These cozies work just as well to protect your hands from too cold dishes, like ice cream.

S4H Fast Fridays projects are all about whipping up something wonderful in no time at all, and these cozies are super quick and easy. Set up an assembly line and create a bevy of bowl cozies in a single afternoon. • Add a layer of batting against the wrong side of both the front panel and the back panel. The edges of the two layers should be flush all around.
  • Using a fabric pen or pencil, draw in the two diagonal lines from corner to corner as shown on the paper pattern.NOTE: As always when working on the right side of your fabric, make sure your marking tool is one that will easily wipe away or will vanish with exposure to the air or the heat of an iron.
  • Lightly pin together the layers at the outside edges and along the drawn lines.
  • Thread the machine with thread to best match the fabric. Slightly lengthen the stitch.
  • Stitch along the drawn lines on one layered pair. First in one direction and then in the opposite direction, creating a large X.
  • Repeat on the second layered pair. Take the time to re-thread with matching thread if need be.
  • On both the front and the back panels, pin the cutouts right sides together. These cutouts are similar to a dart, but without the traditional center fold of fabric. This was done to reduce bulk.
  • Rather than bringing together two marked lines as you would to create a standard folded dart, you simply align the raw edges of each cutout, right sides together, and pin in place.
  • Stitch together using a very narrow seam allowance: ¼.
  • Press open the tiny seam allowances.
  • When all four cutouts are sewn on both the front and back panels, your cozy has already begun to form its final boxy shape.
  • Re-set the stitch length to normal.
