Celebrating its 22nd Anniversary, the Prom Boutique provided Dresses for 795 Regional High School Students

Hempstead, NY May 25, 2016 The Long Island Volunteer Center, working in conjunction with Nassau Community College Marketing & Fashion students, coordinated 18 collection sites across Long Island last month to accept new and gently-used prom dresses, bridesmaid dresses and accessories for the 22nd Annual Prom Boutique held at NCC on April 16. All dresses and accessories were distributed free of charge to girls of families across the region who cannot easily absorb the expense of a new gown for their prom, awards ceremony, or graduation. High school guidance counselors, at-risk youth agencies, group homes, and church outreaches made the program available to their constituents. Seven hundred ninety-five girls benefited from 28 different schools and nonprofit youth organizations across Long Island. Created at the Junior League of Long Island in 1995 and added to the array of community service projects at the Long Island Volunteer Center in 1999, this event was made possible with generous funding from Alex and Ani, Bellmore Lions Club, Friends of Lana, LIU Post Long Island Volunteers Service Club, Weight Watchers, and Zurich NA.

The Long Island Volunteer Center

Dear Friends of the Long Island Volunteer Center,

Because the best thing all of us can do to protect ourselves, our families and our neighbors is to practice social distancing, the Long Island Volunteer Center will be suspending all our volunteer activities until May 15, the updated date for residents to stay at home as directed by NYS Governor Andrew Cuomo. Our staff will be reachable by email and voicemail and will continue to prepare for all the important ways volunteers improve lives and strengthen the community.

It is critical to listen and follow the directions of state and local authorities and get information from trusted, reliable sources.LIVCs COVID-19 page is filling up with links to resources and volunteer related information including safety tips, opportunities as well as in-kind donation needs as they surface.

We want you to be aware that we are a member agency of the Long Island VOAD and receive regular updates from Long Island leadership on regional response. We are also in contact with our national office, Points of Light, and metro-area volunteer centers to monitor the best use/application of volunteers to meet the demands of this healthcare crisis and its economic impact.

Q: How Many Volunteers Can Show Up

I Volunteered at a NYC Soup Kitchen for a Day

A: Single volunteers on weekdays must call ahead to reserve a day. On the weekendâs single volunteers are welcome, but need to call ahead to make sure we are not at our limit for volunteers on that day. We schedule groups of no more than six people and arrangements need to be made ahead of time.

Event Recognized September 11th As A National Day Of Service & Remembrance With47 Volunteers Lending A Hand

Hempstead, N.Y. September 14, 2016, The Long Island Volunteer Center and the Nassau County Firefighters Museum and Education Center in conjunction with Long Island Blood Services hosted a Blood Drive on Monday, September 12th from 2:00pm to 8:00pm. The Blood Drive was held at the Nassau County Firefighters Museum in Garden City as a poignant way for Long Islanders to pay tribute to 9/11 victims and heroes. In all, 22 pints were donated which, according to blood donor statistics, will help save the lives of up to 66 individuals.

Another feature of the commemorative Day of Service was assembling 140 comfort kits for homeless veterans served by Beacon House at the Northport VA. The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs reports that one out of every six people in a U.S. homeless shelter is a veteran. The harsh reality is that those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces are 50 percent more likely to fall into homelessness than are other Americans.

$383 Million For Suffolk County Projects

Governor Cuomo today identified up to $383 million for four proposed resiliency and water quality projects to extend sewers in Suffolk County in four areas, which County Executive Bellone advanced. Subject to federal approval, the State has identified up to $300 million in Community Development Block Grant Disaster Recovery funding and $83 million to be financed through low-interest loans from the Clean Water State Revolving Fund administered by the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation and the Department of Environmental Conservation.

The extension of sewers to these areas is an important step to help Suffolk County recover from Superstorm Sandy and will dramatically jump start a comprehensive effort to reduce nitrogen pollution that adversely affects coastal wetlands that protect communities from damaging storms and are critical to the regions economic and environmental health. The proposed projects include:

Red Cross Provides Tips For College

Learn what to do in an emergency by taking a CPR/First Aid/AED class before heading to school.

Posted September 03, 2014 , New York , New York

Students heading off to collegeperhaps for the first time this yearmay be inexperienced at driving long distances or driving alone. When preparing college-aged children for a long drive to school, make sure they take the following precautions.

Driving Tips:

· Before packing the car, do a simple safety check. Check lights, turn signals, tire pressure and fluid levels.

· Make sure you pack carefully so there is nothing blocking your view through the rear window.

· Prepare an emergency kit for your vehicle and keep there at all times. Include a first aid kit as well as items like a blanket, flares, a flashlight, batteries and jumper cables.

· Leave early and give yourself enough time to travel at a comfortable pace.

· If you find yourself getting tired, pull over to a gas station to walk around and refresh yourself.

· Never talk on your cell phone while driving. If you must use the phone, pull over to a safe, well-lit parking lot. Place your call there or at least use a hands-free earpiece. NEVER text and drive.

· When driving in inclement weather reduce your speed. Dont make sudden moves if the roads are wet. Applying the brakes slowly and steadily will help you keep better control of your vehicle.

· Remember to always wear your seat belt and require any passengers to do the same.
