Zero Nutritional Difference Between Campbell’s Healthytomato Soups And Regular Just Higher Price

3.5.1010:51 AM EDT By Ben Popken

A new ABC7 investigation shows Campbells Healthy Request and Low Sodium tomato soups contain the same nutrients and exact same amount of sodium as regular tomato soups, but they cost more. Eek! Waiter! Theres a scam in my soup!

FINDINGS:* Both the LOW SODIUM and normal tomato soups contain the same amount of sodium, 480mg.* The HEALTHY and regular tomato soups are nutritionally exactly the same* Except HEALTHY contains 1.5 grams of fat while regular has 0 grams of fat.* Normal soup costs $.99

* Healthy varieties cost more is because the recipes are different* And theyre made in smaller batches.* Fat was added for flavor* And to help the body absorb nutrients* Healthy claim falls within American Heart Association guidelines* 25% less sodium claim is as compared to the average all varieties of condensed soup, not just tomato.

CONSUMERISTS TAKE:* Classic example of two-tiered pricing, and deceptive marketing* It seems we live in a culture where everything is perceived as unhealthy until a marketing message tells us otherwise* Always read the fine print, even on your freakin cans of plain tomato soup

Campbells Healthy Request Cream Of Mushroom Soup: Decoded

Water and mushrooms need little explanation. We could get picky and ask if its clean water and organic mushrooms, but lets not. Okay?

Modified food starch is a heavily-processed ingredient used as a thickening agent, stabilizer, and emulsifier. It can be made from any number of starchy foods, including corn, wheat, or tapioca. The consensus seems to be that its relatively harmless. However, if youre gluten-sensitive, youll want to avoid it unless its explicitly labeled gluten-free. Also, if its made from corn, theres a 88% chance its genetically-modified corn with built-in pesticides and other goodies. Its also likely that modified food starch hides MSG, although this may not always be true for all cases.

Wheat flour is a refined flour with added synthetic vitamins and minerals. While this may not be best for you, its also not especially concerning. Many foods are made with refined flours, and this is in low enough quantities that I suspect its only here to be a thickener.

Vegetable oil is definitely one of those totally gross products of the industrialization of our food supply that I wish our culture would entirely abandon. Corn, cottonseed, canola, and soybean oil are all highly likely to be from genetically-modified plants. But the real kicker here is that these industrially-produced oils are completely unnatural and new to the human diet:

Sugar refers to refined table sugar, and it likely comes from genetically-modified sugar beets.

The Healthiest And Unhealthiest Campbells Soups

Campbell’s Soups might be healthy on the outside, but watch out for the sodium.

When youre standing in front of a giant wall of Campbells Soups at the supermarket, its tricky to know which soups are healthier than others without checking each individual label. So weve done the work for you and figured out which of their soups have the most and least amount of calories, divided into each of their product categories including Condensed, Chunky, and Homestyle.

One thing that you should be on the lookout for when eating any canned soup is the sodium level, which is high across the board. Unless youre a member of the enlightened minority, chances are youre eating more than your daily allowance of sodium. In doing so, youre pretty much quickly volunteering your body for high blood pressure, which then lends itself to cardiovascular disease, which is the number one cause of death in the world, according to the American Heart Association.

Pretty heavy stuff.

If commercial soups like Campbells play a frequent role in your diet, then you need to be aware of how one serving alone may be tipping you over your sodium allowance and putting you at risk for ailments far more grave then you feeling bloated in your skinny jeans.

Campbell

Mmm, mmm, good. Part of the English language. Most everyone would recognize it as the Campbells soup slogan. Their soups are, generally speaking, just that good and not great. This is true with some of their Healthy Request soups that we tested .

A can makes two servings, but realistically for most folks it would be a single dinner serving of soup. That makes it 960 mg of sodium . Thats still a fair amount of salt. It is, however, very low calorie at 240 for the two servings. Unless youre on a very sodium restricted diet, this is a pretty good choice.

The Healthy Request Tomato soup is also pretty good, with a sweet tomato flavor. It has about the same amount of salt as the Chunky Chicken Noodle at 470 mg per cup. Interestingly, this one does call for mixing the concentrate with 1% milk, but the milk is not included in the Nutrition Facts keep that in mind when reading the label.

The Chicken Rice soup is Mmm, mmm, edible, but barely. Like the tomato, it is also a condensed soup, but using water makes it thin and the overall effect is bland, bland, bland. While this soup claims to use lower sodium sea salt, the salty flavor comes from potassium chloride and that is immediately obvious in the metallic taste. The rice is white, the broth thin, the chicken sparse with a texture of dried up little bullets and theres almost no veggies. Leave this one on the shelf.
