It went by a lot of names and was pretty restrictive, but the good thing about the diet is you were allowed to eat as much of the Cabbage Soup as you wanted. Whether youre looking to follow that diet or not, The Original Fat Burning Cabbage Soup is really a fantastic soup.
Whats not to love about this Cabbage Soup? Nothing as far as Im concerned. Ive never gone on that Cabbage Soup Diet, but I love the soup! It tastes great, its low-calorie and high in nutrition, downright cheap, easy to make and makes a big pot. And since it makes such a big pot, I like to portion some of mine out and freeze in individual servings or larger for a family. So lets add make-ahead, meal prep and freezer meal to that list.
When I have The Original Fat Burning Cabbage Soup in my freezer, I know I know I can always grab a quick container of soup for lunch or dinner. Sometimes Ill just have it because I like it, but other times I use if for a little balance. if Im having a day when Im not getting my veggies in, I dont have to think about it. I just pop some in the microwave. And if theres been a day when Ive pigged out the next day I can have a quick bowl for breakfast lunch or dinner.

Cabbage Soup Diet Day 2
Its Tuesday the day of vegetables and no fruit. After starting the day with some Body Combat on You Tube it is time to tuck into the cabbage soup.
- 8am 2 ladles of cabbage soup
- 1pm 3 ladles cabbage soup
- 6pm 1 ladles cabbage soup
Because we can also have vegetables today, I added them to the soup to make mealtimes less boring.
With lunch I had sweet potato cubes over the soup and then for dinner I had cinnamon flavoured steamed carrots and some orange peppers.
Note, that on day 2 of the cabbage soup diet you are also allowed potatoes. This can be white or sweet, but many suggest having it for breakfast. Instead, I went with adding sweet potato cubes over my soup for lunch.

Cabbage Soup Diet Day 6
Hello day 6 and welcome to the weekend! Its also a day when you can enjoy either poultry or red meat along with vegetables.
- 10am 2 ladles cabbage soup
- 1pm sirloin steak + pumpkin
- 7pm topside beef + broccoli + pumpkin gravy
I also started my period today and maybe its all the fruit lately because I have no sugar cravings and dont feel as bloated as I normally do. In fact, I feel amazing.
I thought I would enjoy some red meat with the family and the beef doesnt disappoint. Then to get the gravy, I added pumpkin to leftover beef juices to make a gravy. Isnt that amazing? You can read more about how I do it, in our how to thicken gravy post.

If youre planning to try it, youll need to make some large batches of cabbage soup as preparation so youll have plenty to eat throughout the week. You are allowed a few other foods, but the guidelines are below.

- 6 large onions, chopped
- 2 cans of tomatoes
- 250g mushrooms, sliced
- 1 package dry onion soup mix
- 1 or 2 cubes bouillon Salt and pepper
- For added flavour: Cayenne pepper, curry powder, mixed herbs or any other seasoning.
Instructions:
1. Use spray oil to sauté the chopped onions in a large pot.2. Add the green pepper pieces and heat for a minute.3. Add the chopped cabbage leaves, sliced carrots, celery and mushrooms.4. Sprinkle over a little cayenne pepper or curry powder.5. Add 12 cups of water and any additional stock cubes.6. Cook over a medium heat until the soup is the vegetables are tender and the soup is the right consistency.

So we made a pact to try The Cabbage Soup diet together and blog our adventure so others know if it works if it doesnt, and how it makes us feel. I mean, is it really water weight?
Does it make you crap your pants? Once you lose weight, can you keep it off?
We are sure there are people out there that have searched it and want to know, so we are doing a social experiment. I will be recording everything I eat during the diet and will include any form of exercise I do.
Just so you know, here is the cabbage soup 7-day diet plan.
- Salt, pepper, parsley, garlic powder, soy sauce to taste

Spray a large pot with cooking spray and sautee all vegetables except cabbage and tomatoes until tender. Add cabbage and 12 cups of water or 8 cups and 4 cups of V8. Toss in bouillon cubes, soup mix, and seasonings. Cook until soup reaches desired tenderness add tomatoes.

Yes, this is a crash diet. But it can be a great kick starter to a long term plan to include more fruits and vegetables into your diet. The Cabbage Soup recipe itself has no magic, but its a great, economical staple soup to eat often. And studies show that if you start your meal with soup, you will have less room for other less healthy food.
I also love how budget friendly this diet is. So ya, I go on this diet here and there and I really like it!

Cabbage Soup Diet Results
As you can see from what you read above, I enjoyed banana ice cream, delicious homemade cabbage soup, cheated with fried onions, ate chocolate, and made blueberry slush drinks.
But worst of all I started my period on the 6th day and I always have weight gain with the dreaded monthlys. This of course ruined my results.
However, I STILL managed to lose 2.35kg or 5 pounds in 7 days. Then while most people gain weight the week after I lost another 2 kg . Giving me a total cabbage soup diet before and after weight loss of 9.4 pounds.
How Does The Cabbage Soup Diet Help You Lose Weight

I noticed that in the original cabbage soup diet that can also have brown rice on this day. Yet the more up to date versions of the cabbage soup diet dont include it. I went with it and had some instant pot brown rice alongside one of my soup portions.
I also made myself a late morning slush drink. Made with just frozen blueberries, ice and water it was amazing. I must do this again!
As well as that, today I cheated and had a low carb Atkins style chocolate bar which was yummy. The kids also gave me a few of their sweets.

Why This Is The Best Cabbage Soup Diet Recipe
One of the most significant changes I made to the originalcabbage soup is that I added more protein! The bone broth here and lean beefadd flavor as well as protein to help you feel satiated. This cabbage soup justgot an upgrade from a side dish or snack to a full entrée.
Using some flavorful bone broth allowed me to nix the ultra-processedfoods in the original recipe. The balsamic vinegar also adds deliciousnessto the soups broth. So goodbye, powdered onion soup mix and chicken bouilloncubes, there is no need for you here.
There is also no need to purchase special Cabbage Soup Dietspice blends like youll find for sale on the web. Regular dried herbs willwork just fine.
Another change I made was to adjust the vegetables to improvethe flavor. I love onions, but six seemed like a lot to put in a soup .
Then again, this recipe makes quite a lot of soup! I quicklylearned that my sizeable Dutch oven was not going to be sufficient to hold all ofthis veggie goodness. Heres a photo I took before I switched pots and finishedadding the rest of the cabbage in:
