Mistake : You Dont Pay Attention To The Salt Content Of Your Soups
Making most of your meals as soup can increase the sodium content in your diet and it doesnt just affect your waistline.
Soup is one of the foods that is typically high in salt in part because some of its ingredients are salty . Even if you mainly eat canned soups, you should know that they are often high in salt.
And as we all know, too much salt is unhealthy: it can increase the risk of high blood pressure, kidney stones, and stomach cancer, and is unhealthy for the heart.
When we eat too much salt, our bodies retain water, which can lead to swelling, gas, and even weight gain.
/6how To Make Your Meals More Nutritious
If you do prefer having soups or salads as a part of your everyday dietplan, do ensure that you make use of choice, fresh, seasonal vegetables and fruits. Spices and dressings can be added as well, which can speed up your progress.
If you prefer having vegetable soups, use nutritious vegetables and avoid the use of excessive cornflour. Processed and instant soups should be avoided too.
Also, make sure you have a portion of proteins with whatever you are having. This is very crucial for good weight loss.
Adding nuts and seeds to your soups and salads will also enrich the taste and nutrition of your meal.

Drawbacks Of The Cabbage Soup Diet
As with most restrictive diets, it is possible to feel hungry or deprived during the first days. However, as the body gets the nutrients it needs and resets itself, you will no longer experience cravings. For example, as you consume fruit on a daily basis, you will no longer feel like you need to reach out for biscuits, candy or chocolate.
Another drawback is that the Cabbage Soup Diet can feel more boring than other diets. After all, you need to eat the same kind of soup every day for a whole week, for at least twice a day. Heres a tip: you can use spices to make it tasty and different each time.
The good news is that spices tend to boost the metabolism, not only make your meals delicious. Pepper, cloves, oregano, basil, chili etc. are well known for their fat burning properties, so go ahead and flavor your cabbage soup according to taste. Cabbage can take a whole range of different flavors. It will no longer feel like youre eating the same food over and over again.
Finally, there is the risk that the weight you lost comes back after a week on this diet. This happens because were dealing mostly with water weight. As stated in the beginning, this program isnt suitable for long-term or permanent weight loss. Do not attempt to turn it into a lifestyle, no matter how much youre enjoying the results.
May Cause Gallbladder Issues
There have been a few anecdotal reports of gallstones and gallbladder blockages in people who used the Cabbage Soup Diet over the long term.
Gallstones can be the unintended consequence of any rapid weight loss.
Normally, when you eat high-fat foods, your gallbladder releases digestive juices to help break them down.
However, if you hardly eat any fat, your gallbladder may not empty for longer periods of time, making it more likely that stones will form.
Gallstones may be more common among people following a very-low-calorie diet or a low-fat diet, such as the Cabbage Soup Diet .

How Does The Cabbage Soup Diet Work
The concept is fairly simple: you make and eat as much cabbage soup as you want. Generally people eat between two and three bowls per day – and because it contains virtually no calories, this leads to weight loss.
The idea behind the diet is that you feel full while losing weight due to being in an intense calorie deficit.
While the cabbage element is naturally essential for this diet, you can eat other low-fat foods while on the plan. Mina, founder of Formulate Health , says, The soup doesnt only contain cabbage. Many recipes include green peppers, onions, mushrooms and other vegetables.”
“As well as cabbage soup, the diet allows you to start incorporating different fruits and vegetables in the first few days, and slowly reintroduces lean meats, dairy and rice towards the end of the 7 day program.”
Here Are Essential Soup Ingredients To Include
- Broth or stock: From organic to low-sodium to vegetarian, the ideal soup base is up to you and can be fortifying on its own. Make your special stock or broth by simmering turkey, chicken or beef scraps, or a pot of vegetables and add herbs or spices to flavor.
- Vegetables: Use canned tomatoes, leftover cooked vegetables, frozen vegetables, or chopped fresh vegetables, such as onions, celery, carrots, cabbage, greens, and broccoli.
- Canned or dried beans: These versatile legumes add protein and fiber and work well in almost any soup.
- Protein: Choose chicken, turkey, or lean beef. You may add small amounts of ham or sausage for flavor.
- Vegetarian protein: Add slices of tofu or crumbled tempeh to your bowl. Top your soup with shredded cheese for more protein.
- Herbs and seasonings: Garlic pumps up flavor well. Bay leaf, thyme, basil, and oregano meld nicely with most soups.

/6they May Not Make For A Balanced Meal
However, all being said, it’s important to remember this very well that salads and soups are only part of a balanced diet and not a complete meal in itself. Therefore, attempting to try out a diet that only boasts of depending on soups and salads can not just devoid you of other nutrients you may need to lose weight, but also make you more prone to experiencing deficiencies. Remember, soups and salads alone do not make a healthy choice. Whether you are vegan, vegetarian or a non-vegetarian, you need a balanced intake of all food groups to lose weight in a holistic manner. Relying on just one form of nutrition won’t help you lose weight well, or even if it does, the results may not be beneficial in the long run.
Some nutritionists also opine that while soups and salads make for a lighter meal and are low on carbs, they may not be the most helpful choice at all times. The body needs nutrients to keep moving, and depending on the lifestyle you lead, higher carb consumption may be required. For the same reason, having soups and salads as your last meal of the day is preferable, instead of having them for breakfast or lunch.

I did it in the instant pot! I sauteed the onions, garlic, carrots, green beans and mushrooms in olive oil. Then added broth and gave it a good stir to scrape up bits. I added Kale instead of cabbage and cooked it 5 minutes. Quick release, add zucchini and stir. Add tomatoes last and dont stir. Cook another 5 minutes and quick release. I didnt add beans or tomato juice. I sprinkled it with parmesan and it was wonderful!

Sacred Heart Soup Diet
Similar to the cabbage soup diet, the Sacred Heart soup diet is a 7-day eating plan that consists almost entirely of a broth-based soup with non-starchy vegetables.
While other low calorie foods are allowed, the diet is very specific as to which foods can be included each day.
When followed closely, the Sacred Heart soup diet claims to help you lose 1017 pounds in 1 week.
There are several types of soup diets. While some are more restrictive in what you can eat, like the cabbage soup diet, others allow for more flexibility, like the bean soup diet.
And the fewer calories you eat on a soup diet, generally the more weight youll lose.
Just keep in mind that as with other low calorie diets, most of the weight lost over the 510 days is likely due to water rather than fat loss .
Furthermore, as the diets are generally for only a week or less, youll likely regain the weight you lost unless youre able to transition into a more sustainable weight loss eating plan .
As the bean soup diet recommends transitioning into a plant-based eating pattern, it may have better long-term success than the others.
Regularly consuming soup has been linked to a lower body weight. However, theres insufficient research on the benefits of soup diets for weight loss. Still, due to the low calorie nature of these eating plans, youll likely lose some weight in the short term.

Mistake : Eating Soup For Multiple Meals
Making most of your meals soup can really rack up the sodium in your diet â which only tangentially affects your waistline, but hear us out.
Soup is one of those foods that are typically sodium-laden â in part because some of its inherent ingredients are salty .
But also, if you’re mostly eating canned soup, know that those are often sodium-heavy. In fact, canned soup ranks fifth among the saltiest foods most Americans eat, according to the American Heart Association .
Also, when we eat too much sodium, our body holds onto water and that can lead to puffiness, bloating and, yes, even weight gain.
