For this first time this past December, I hosted a Hanukkah dinner at our house for a few close friends. While Im not observant, I can acknowledge and appreciate the culture that that side of my family brings to the table But more than anything it was an excuse to break out my grandmas recipe box, making latkes, brisket, matzo ball soup, and a cocoa torte for dessert .

Every time I open the box of her recipes the mere smell of it transports me back to her house. Maybe thats why I dont open it more often: I get too darn emotional every time I do. And yet, I hope that smell never goes away.

I always have a hard time writing about her recipes, mainly because they are so meaningful to me and I want to do them justice, but, unlike the latkes and the cheesecake, this one doesnt really have a story. Its not something we ever cooked together, and actually, I dont think Ive ever had her matzo ball soup at all. Probably because it is traditionally more of a Passover dish, and we would always visit my Grandma around Hanukkah, stuffing ourselves with as many latkes as we could fry in the tiny Florida kitchen. So I dont associate her with matzo balls the way I do with latkes. Still, I thought it fitting to serve it at our dinner .

Its my goal to share more of these heirloom recipes, and I know Grandma would approve. She wasnt one to keep secret recipes rather, food was, and still is, all about sharing.

Matzo Ball Soup For Gentiles

With Passover right around the corner, I thought Id share some photos from a recent visit with my family. We discovered my great-grandmas Jewish cookbook with recipes compiled by her retirement community and we definitely had to try them out.

Thing is, the two ladies in the following photos are not Jewish. They are my mom, who has picked up enough knowledge over the 40 years shes been married to my Jewish dad, teaching my brand-new sister-in-law who had never made Jewish food before that moment. The learning curve can be steep with matzo ballsyou cant make them too big and watch out for splash back when you drop them in the soup! I think they did alright since it sure tasted good in the end.

The recipe from the book is for the matzo balls themselves. We throw them is a simple broth of chicken stock seasoned with kosher salt and parsley, and we throw in a few carrots and some celery for good measure.

See the recipe after the photos.

Grandma Ruths Matzo Balls For Chicken Soup

It was an inside joke in our family that Great Aunt Roses matzo balls were never to be eaten as they were as heavy and dense as lead. So, of course as a young bride and newly converted Jewess, I was determined to produce light, flavorful matzo balls for my chicken soup.

Today I look back at those days and wonder what was so difficult? Grandma Ruth painstakingly showed me how to easily make this tasty dumpling a no-brainer..and thankfully, my matzo balls have always turned out light and deliciousmaking homemade chicken soup a comfort food in our householdbut the ingredients are few and the technique simpleso I dont understand anyone ending up with leaden matzo balls. The trick is not to compress the dough when rolling each ball between your palms, just lightly encourage each tablespoon of dough to form a ball.

Remember that chicken soup I made at the beginning of winter and stored in my freezer for a sick day? Well, unfortunately I am feeling a cold coming on, and knew there was no better cure for a sore throat and sniffles than a hot bowl of home made chicken soup with matzo balls. When you have no appetite and cant taste a thingthis is just the ticket! The aroma of chicken soup and the delicate flavor of steaming hot matzo balls breaks through those sick day blues!

Jewish Grandma Approved Matzo Ball Soup

My mom has always taught me that there is nothing a steaming bowl of chicken soup cant fix, and I happen to wholeheartedly agree.

Lately my commute in the elevator at work has involved shielding myself from coughs and sneezes, sniffles seem to be more prevalent than ever, and this freezing rainy weather is not doing us any favors. Its officially cold season people, and we need to arm ourselves!

The perfect weapon? This insanely good chicken soup recipe that takes a nod from my Jewish grandmother, who adds a plump matzo ball in with hers.

Fresh with dill, hearty with big chunks of chicken, and full of good-for-you veg, this soup is part of your aresenal against any sickness that could come your way. And guess what? It couldnt be easier!

My secret weapon in this soup is a rotisserie chicken that you can pick up from nearly any grocery store. Theyre always juicy, full of flavor, and make the soup so quick to whip up.

Take your chicken and shred it into bite sized pieces. You should throw away the bones and the skin, but any liquid thats in the bottom of the container it came in should be saved to add to the stock.

Next up I made the matzo balls. This may sound like a sin, but I used the matzo mix from a box, and it was absolutely delicious. I promise my Jewish grandma, Mennie, approves!

So, make the matzo balls according to the directions. The mix will probably call for them to set for 20 or so minutes, so while they do go on and chop your veg.

Take that cold season!

1 lb. bag peeled baby carrots

2 yellow onions medium to large

5-6 regular carrots

1 package Croyden House Matzo ball mix

Jewish Chicken Soup With Matzo Ballsthe Real Jewish Penicillin

This recipe is what my childhood memories are made of. It is what I need to turn to when I am sick or aching from a bad day. The rich golden broth makes my sniffles melt away and warms my soul. Full of veggies, tender chicken and moist, melt away matzo balls, this Jewish Chicken Soup is the Real Jewish Penicillinthe answer to all of lives hard times.

This post is a recreation of the very first blog post I ever wrote. However, it was so near and dear to my heart that I decided I needed to make it better.

Year after year, the one request I get from my readers and clients alike is to teach them the secret to a real Jewish chicken soup. There are very few rules to a good chicken soup, mine starts with two ingredients, heart and soul.

This Chicken Soup was the ONLY food I would eat as a kid. We had to have it in the house all the time or else I went hungry.

I can still recall that wonderful taste. The best part was when my mother used to hand feed me with it. She would take a bite size piece of bread with some meat on it from the soup and put it in my mouth followed by a spoonful of broth. That taste has been forever imprinted in my mind.

When I am sick, this is my calling. All diets are off when Im sick, I slurp up every golden circle of chicken fat and gobble up every last piece of chicken skin, until my belly smiles with glee.

And so I pass my moms simple recipe onto you.

This soup is ALWAYS a standard in my freezer as well as on my holiday tables.

Review Of Myeongdong Dakhanmari Main

Local favorite restaurant and its highly recommended for anyone who enjoys chicken! This is home style chicken soup with potatoes and sticky rice stick. All it was missing were some carrots -) to remind me of my own grandmas soup back in the states. We went in and didnt even need to order apparently theres only one main dish. We sat at a table and our waitress brought out a hot pot for the soup, and a whole, fresh young chicken. She cut the chicken into pieces with a scissors in front of us, and placed it into the pot to cook. The chicken was clean .The meal cost 18,000 KRW , and the two of us were pleasantly stuffed. The chicken was absolutely delicious. To find it: Line 1 subway stop Jongno5, exit 6. Walk straight for 30 meters . Instead, after your 30 meter walk, turn left down a big alley, its another market. Head straight down this main alley for about 150 meters at least. Youll past outdoor clothing shop like Patagonia, etc. Eventually the alley will turn into a food street. This restaurant will be on a corner on your left side. Check the photos.

What Gluten Free Noodles Are Best For Chicken Soup

Grandmas Matzo Ball Soup

Some brands of gluten free pasta definitely hold up better than others. I like Jovial and Barilla pasta brands for chicken soup. As I mentioned above, you do not want to cook these in your soupbut these noodles will hold up to sitting in a bowl of soup for a little while.

Homemade Chicken Soup A Delicious Alternative To Flowers

What started in the small kitchen of the Poritzky family in Massachusetts, became a considerable success that dazzled Boston, New York and Atlanta, among other areas. In 2004, Janice Poritzky, a loving grandmother of seven and a spectacular cook, began spreading her divine recipes across the nation, offering a taste of her Jewish essence. Grandmas Chicken Soup broke ground with her glorious matzah ball chicken soup that fed her grandchildren, family members and friends during Passover.

The idea to share grandmas love of cooking slowly escalated. The Poritzkys set up a soup shop where guests came to try her homemade delicacies such as her creamy mac and cheese, delicious matzah ball chicken soup, kugels and fresh-from-the-skillet potato latkes. Sales soared, considering it was the only business selling homemade chicken soups, so Janice Poritzky and her children, Betsy Maselek and David Poritzky, decided to take a step further.

While the entire country was quarantined, businesses were shut down, employees were let go, the Poritzky family experienced a different phenomenon that made the business prevail despite the pandemic. It was Passover of 2020 when the pandemic was well underway. The family began sending orange, polka-dot packaged deliveries of its homemade soup to thousands around the country as a delicious alternative to flowers and a warm hug sent from miles away.
