Pressure cooking in the Instant Pot reduces the cooking time a fair amount. Using an electric one also allows you to leave the pot unattended while it cooks. The cooker will even switch to a Keep Warm setting once cooking has finished so you dont have to worry about turning off the cooker right away when the soup is done.

I did some quick research on rotisserie chickens – checking the weight at my local stores – and they varied. Most were about 2 pounds, but Costcos famous rotisserie chickens were closer to 4 pounds. Thats OK – one bird will give you enough bones and meat to make this soup.

Pressure Cooker Chicken Noodle Soup: The Herbs
As I told my friend Michele, I like to add a little dried dill to my chicken noodle soup. The dill brings a light, almost sweet, flavor to the soup. I got the idea from my grandmother. She didnt make homemade chicken soup. What she did make were those little boxes of Mrs. Grasss soup. She loved that soup and said more than once, I think theres dill in this.
To this day, I have no idea if Mrs. Grasss soup ever contained dill. My grandmother thought it did and thats good enough for me*.

Can You Overcook Chicken In A Pressure Cooker
How long to cook Instant Pot Chicken Breast: Dont overcook overcooked chicken breast is not anyones favorite thing, but is somewhat difficult to do in the Instant Pot because the steam provides such a moist environment for the chicken to cook in. Dont undercook undercooked chicken breast is just plain dangerous!
Sear The Chicken First For More Flavor
Take advantage of the saute feature on the Instant Pot. Searing the meat in the hot fat adds more flavor to the surface due to the Maillard reaction. When the surface temperature of the food reaches 300-degrees, youll see a brown crust form and start to smell the aromatics. This process also gives any fat time to render into the pan to flavor the liquid.

Pressure Cooker Chicken Noodle Soup: The Noodles
Now lets get serious. Its time to talk about noodles!
It doesnt matter what kind of noodles you use in this soup. Use whatever you love. Personally, Im all about egg noodles. We do need to talk about how to cook those noodles.
Dont get mad at me. Please? Please dont get mad at me.
I dont cook my soup noodles in the pressure cooker. There. I said it.
Noodles cooked in soup makes for a cloudy soup. The starch from the noodles not only makes the soup cloudy, it also mutes the flavors a bit.
In this case, I think its worth the extra timeand potto cook noodles separately and then add them to the soup. As the pressure cooker builds pressure, I bring a pot of water to a boil and cook the noodles while the soup does its thing in the Instant Pot. My noodles are always ready at the same time as the soup. Then I drain the noodles and stir them into the soup.
If you dont feel like dirtying an extra pot, I totally understand. Simply make the soup under pressure. After releasing the pressure, turn the saute function on and bring the soup to a boil. Stir in the noodles an cook until tender. For egg noodles, this takes about 6 minutes.
How To Quick Release Instant Pot
When making this Instant Pot Chicken noodle soup, youll use a quick release to stop the cooking so the chicken doesnt overcook. When the cycle ends, just turn the venting knob to vent to release the steam.
Always protect your hand with an oven mitt or kitchen towel to prevent burns as the steam is very hot. Quick release will make the pressure drop in seconds instead of minutes. Once released, the lid will easily open. Never force the lid off your Instant Pot if it doesnt open easily, it is still under pressure and should not be opened!
Tips For The Best Pressure Cooked Chicken
- Youll need a 6-quart or larger pressure cooker for this recipe. The pot should be just big enough to fit a 3- to 4-pound chicken. If you have a larger pressure cooker , you can also get away with using a slightly larger chicken.
- Be careful when doing a quick-release. This is because liquid-heavy pressure cooker recipes like this soup can release a lot of steam during the venting step after cooking.
- Scared of steam? That’s ok! If you want to avoid the jet of steam entirely, you can wait for the pressure to release naturally. Just wait until the pressure cookers float valve has returned to its “down” position. This will take quite a while, though, since this recipe contains a lot of liquid.
- Chicken jello?! Good chicken soup made with the whole chicken will often develop a jelly-like consistency once chilled, so don’t be alarmed if this happens to you! The soup will turn back into liquid when warmed.

Add Aromatics To The Soup Base
I use a classic combination of onions, carrots, and celery or a mirepoix to add sweetness and rustic flavors. Leaving the root vegetables in larger chunks gives a pop of color and a heartier texture. After the chicken is seared and removed, the vegetables briefly saute.
The moisture in the veggies helps to deglaze the pan of any flavorful browned bits from meat and juices. Cooking the minced garlic, thyme, and rosemary in oil infuses their fat-soluble compounds into the soup for a more pungent lingering herbaceous taste. A dried bay leaf is added into the chicken stock to season the liquid gently.
- Sear the chicken
- Add the chicken back

Do You Boil Noodles Separately For Soup
Noodles left to simmer in soup for too long become slimy and overly soft, and they can break down and make your soup too starchy. If youre adding them on reheating, you can add uncooked pasta after the soup is simmering steadily and cook it for 10 minutes or cook your pasta separately and add it just before serving.
Can You Cook Pasta In The Instant Pot
Absolutely, I frequently cook Instant Pot Mac and Cheese, its easy and wonderful. In the mac and cheese recipe, the pasta is cooked in the Instant Pot under pressure.
In this recipe, the Instant Pot cooks the chicken and veggies under pressure however it is used to boil the pasta using the saute setting at the end. While the noodles could be cooked under pressure in this recipe, the chicken and noodles need different cook times and the Instant Pot takes a lot of time to come up to pressure.

Using The Instant Pot
The advantage of using the multi-cooker is that it can saute and pressure cook all in one. Using the saute setting, the seasoned chicken browns in olive oil first. This process gives the meat and bones a chance to cook in dry heat for better flavor development. The vegetables and herbs briefly saute to create more depth, taking advantage of cooking the aromatics before simmering. Add chicken broth or stock plus a bay leaf, then close the vessel and cook on high pressure.
After pressure cooking, use the natural release option to ensure that no hot liquid splatters from the venting valve. I also cover it with a towel to prevent a mess. During this process, the chicken meat and bones have an extra 10 minutes to infuse flavor. To cook the noodles, remove the chicken and hit the saute setting. It will boil the noodles just like on the stovetop. Once al dente, add the shredded chicken back to the pot and its ready.

Cooking isnt anywhere near my college major, yet here I am over a decade later with a real food blog as well as writing for others with food blogs. Ironic isnt it?
I have never taken a cooking class in my life. When I fell into real food it was literally that: I fell into real food. I had my first baby and just wanted her to eat better food than I did as a child. Plain and simple.
The very first thing I learned how to cook on my real food journey was bone broth, and how to use it for soup. I wasnt a huge fan of just drinking bone broth straight up , so soup-making became a love of mine right from the very beginning.

Does Soaking Beans Reduce Gas
I mentioned this in my Cajun 15 Bean Soup recipe, but I wanted to repeat it again here. I often hear people say that soaking and discarding the soaking water lessens gas problems from eating beans. However, my contact at Hursts Beans says:
In reality, the tried-and-true best way to reduce gas from eating beans is to actually eat beans more regularly. Your digestive system gets more accustomed to processing the natural components in beans, peas, and lentilsthus reducing gas
Why Cook The Noodles Separate
I prefer to cook the noodles separately because they get mushy when they sit in the broth too long or when you reheat them.
Generally, I dont add them to the soup before I serve it. I let each person fill their bowl with as many noodles as they like, then ladle the broth and vegetables over the top to suit their taste.
Plus, the soup reheats much better if the noodles are frozen separately. Noodles require less time to reheat, and heating them separately keeps the noodles from absorbing all the broth.
