Pour the tomato mixture into a saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat. Continue cooking, stirring constantly, for about 10 minutes, until thickened and reduced by about two-thirds.

More Tomato Sauce Substitutes
The following substitutes won’t stand in for tomato sauce if you’re making a pasta dish, but they will give you satisfactory results if the tomato sauce is being mixed into a crockpot recipe, casserole, or something similar that just needs that touch of tomato taste. Here are a couple of options to try.
- Ketchup: Use 1 cup of ketchup in place of 1 cup of tomato sauce. Add spices to tweak the flavor as needed. A bit of basil is a good choice.
- Tomato Soup: Add a 10 3/4-ounce can of tomato soup. Then, cut one of the wet ingredients in the recipe back by 1/4 cup to account for the extra liquid. Tomato soup tends to be sweeter than most tomato sauces, so you may need to make some flavor adjustments.

Is Tomato Paste Healthier Than Tomato Sauce
The major health benefit provided by tomatoes is due to their antioxidants. The antioxidant found in tomatoes is known as lycopene and it helps to prevent cell damage, maintain heart health, and reduce the risk of many types of cancers.
It is said that lycopene in the tomato paste absorbs better, making this ordinary cooking ingredient a powerful source of an important antioxidant. Thus, as far as the antioxidant contents go, tomato paste overshadows fresh tomatoes and tomato sauce that is cooked very little.

How To Make Tomato Herb Soup Step By Step Photos
Start by adding ¼ cup olive oil, 2 cloves minced garlic, 1/2 tsp dried oregano, 1/2 tsp dried basil, 1/2 tsp dried thyme, 1/4 tsp dried rosemary, 1 pinch crushed red pepper flakes, and some freshly cracked black pepper to a sauce pot. Turn the heat on to medium-low and sauté the herbs in the oil for about two minutes, or until the garlic has softened.
Add 6 oz. tomato paste and 1 Tbsp brown sugar to the pot. Stir until everything is pretty well combined . Continue to stir and cook for about 5 minutes more, or until the tomato paste takes on a darker burgundy hue .
Add one 28 oz. can of crushed tomatoes. Crushed tomatoes are smaller bits than diced tomatoes, but not quite as smooth as tomato sauce. Its somewhere in between, and doesnt have any seasoning added.
Also add 3 cups of vegetable broth, which will thin the soup out, add depth of flavor, and just the right amount of salt. I use this Better Than Bouillon to quickly mix up the exact amount of broth that I need.
Then just whisk everything together and heat through! The end! The flavors are even better the next day.
OMG grilled cheese + tomato soup FTW!
Now give yourself a high-five for making such a delicious soup in under 30 minutes.
Canned Tomatoes Are Best
While fresh ripe summer tomatoes can make a lovely tomato soup, when it comes to mastering classic tomato soup, canned is best. Canned tomatoes provide a consistent soup whether youre making it October or January. You can use whole canned tomatoes or even canned diced tomatoes for making this soup in a pinch, but Ive found crushed tomatoes have the right amount of acidity and flavor and dont require as much blending time.
Classic tomato soup also gets a potent dose of concentrated tomato flavor from tomato paste. While the amount is small, you really shouldnt skip or substitute this for any other tomato product. Keep both canned tomatoes and tomato paste on hand for tomato soup anytime.

Is Tomato Sauce The Same As Tomato Soup
Tomato sauce and tomato soup are not exactly the same thing.
Tomato Soup usually has thick tomato chunks, herbs, spices, milk or cream, and sometimes stock added to it whereas a tomato sauce is a more liquid consistency with very little chunkiness to it.
Even though they both have tomatoes as an ingredient in them, the textures and flavors are very different!
