How To Make Split Pea Soup

  • For this recipe, you will need a leftover ham bone, which makes this the perfect soup for after Easter or Christmas. Save that ham bone from your holiday ham! If you dont have a leftover ham bone, you can still make the soup. Just buy ham hocks from the grocery store. If you arent sure where to find them, just ask the employee at the meat counter, they can help you. The ham bone or hocks give the soup so much flavor!
  • If you want to make this soup vegetarian, you can leave out the ham and use vegetable broth, but it really gives the soup a lot of flavor.
  • You start with onion, celery, and garlic, like most soups. The soup is also seasoned with bay leaves, thyme, rosemary, chicken broth, and the ham bone or hocks.
  • After you add the split peas, cover the pot with a lid and simmer for 60 minutes, or until the peas are tender. You can stir it occasionally, but it should be fine. Go watch your favorite show or read a book:)
  • When the peas are soft, remove the ham bone or hocks and stir in the carrots. You can also stir in cooked ham to thicken the soup. This is optional, but it will add lots of flavor. Josh always adds ham, especially when we have ham to use up! Its perfect!
  • Cook for an additional 20 minutes so the carrots and soup can thicken up. The soup will thicken even more as it cools and sits, especially the next day. If the soup is too thick, you can add a little water or more broth.
  • Ladle the soup into bowls and garnish with fresh parsley.

Judith Dale: What Was Buellton Like During The 1920s

Milt Guggia Jr., whose father purchased both Pea Soup Andersens Buellton in 1999 and Pea Soup Andersens Santa Nella in 2007, was not available for comment. Milt Guggia Enterprises also owns other local eateries like AJ Spurs in Buellton.

Pea Soup Andersens was the brainchild of Anton Andersen from Denmark, and his wife, Juliette, a French woman. In 1924, they established a restaurant renowned for its split-pea soup a secret recipe of Juliettes and named it Andersens Electric Café because it had one of the first electric stoves in the area.

The iconic sign for Pea Soup Andersens in Buellton.

Buellton City Council member John Sanchez, who confirmed the restaurants listing, remarked that since 1924, the property has entertained a hodgepodge of businesses over the years.

Though nostalgic, Sanchez said he sees real potential for its future.

He recalled that the restaurant at one time housed a popular bar that attracted locals, a memorable place where he ceremoniously celebrated his 50th birthday with friends and family.

Its nice as it is, if someone wants to do something more traditional with it, Sanchez said. But it would be nice to see somebody buy it and build something nice, too.

Should the property sell, Sanchez said the Buellton Historical Society, which uses a designated area in the upstairs portion of the restaurant as its headquarters, could possibly relocate to the old Willemsen Dairy property purchased by the City last year for $2 million.

Andersens Split Pea Soup In Bulleton

If you have driven Highway 101 as much as I have, then you have no doubt seen the sign for Andersens World Famous Split Pea Soup dozens of times. I have passed this place more times than I can count as I have never been a fan of peas in general so I assumed the same would be valid for the soup version. However, in the name of adventure, I made the stop and sat down to a bowl of green soup. Here is the review.

History

Andersens was founded in 1924 when Anton Andersen got the property and created Andersens Eclectic Cafe. After only a few months, they added a family recipe for split pea soup to the repertoire, which quickly became the favorite on the menu. In the 30s and 40s, they acquired rights to a cartoon that eventually became the logo and started advertising up and down the state. They have been doing the same thing ever since, making pea soup and getting people to stop with their funny signs on the highway, with more locations coming each year.

After pulling off Highway 101 on the Avenue of Flags, I made my way down to Andersons massive Danish building right off the freeway. Parking was easy in the lot behind the restaurant, right under the iconic logo that I have seen so many times on the drive.

I was on a mission though, so I headed into the massive restaurant to get my soup on.

The menu is overwhelming and reminds me of a diner with a wide range of options. I went with the pea soup in a bread bowl with toppings.

I am not a fan of peasat all. But for some strange reason, I LOVE split pea soup. Especially this recipe. Unfortunately, I cant take credit for it. This is my Dads recipe. Its my favorite split pea soup!

Its not a difficult recipe, but it is somewhat time consuming.2 hours of cook time. Its so worth it though! Its also very filling.

One serving is 2 cups and its only 2 SmartPoints! Two cups of soup is a hearty portion!

to view your WW Personal Points and track it on your app.

With the new plan points for this recipe are very different. It depends a lot on the peas and potatoes.

This is also a great recipe you can freeze. My kids dont like this soup so I always have leftovers. That works for me!

When I make it I usually have it for dinner, then I freeze the rest to have for lunch.

The leftover soup tends to thicken up, so I just add a little water to it and its perfect!

  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • Add chicken broth, water, dried split peas, ham bone or ham hock and bay leaf to a large pot. Bring to a boil then lower heat and simmer for one hour.

  • Remove ham bone. At this point, I usually add another cup of water since the peas absorb a lot of the liquid.

  • Use a hand-held blender to create a smooth texture.

  • Add the onions, celery, carrots, potatoes and ham. Also add the Worcestershire sauce, parsley, basil, Italian seasoning and horseradish.
