How To Make Split Pea Soup
- 1I usually use a 28-ounce package of peas and double the rest of the ingredients. A single recipe isn’t quite enough for a family of two adults and two children, or to have enough for a second meal for two adults.
- 2Combine all ingredients in a large pot and boil hard for 20 minutes, then slowly until peas are tender.
- 3Strain through a fine sieve.
- 4Reheat to the boiling point.
- 5I ladle the soup into bowls and sprinkle it with a bit of paprika or Parmesan and a few croutons.I never add ham or anything to this recipe because I love Andersen’s flavor. I sometimes make a different split pea soup with ham that I don’t puree–I leave it kind of chunky with the peas adding texture. It just depends upon what I’m in the mood for. 🙂

Andersens Split Pea Soup

Anderson? Yeah, Im talking about Andersons Pea Soup in Buellton,California off Highway 101 very close to the Dutchtown of Solvang. Anyone whos ever driven on a long trip up the 5 or 101 freeways in California HAS to have seen these billboard signs seemingly in the middle of nowhere proclaiming: Try Andersons Split Pea Soup, only 227 miles!. I dont actually have a picture of one of the signs but I plan to take one next time I drive up north. This is some marketing genius who thought of this. There is absolutely nothing to do while driving up these long stretches of highway, but look at the scenery. So they just buy up some cheap ad billboard space in 50 mile increments or so and plop their signs down advertising how far it is to their Pea Soup Headquarters. Id like to know how successful they are in getting people to think about Pea Soup I know its certainly worked on me! I recently decided to make use of the extra ham and ham hock bones that are inevitably left over from Sunday dinner. Ive never tried to make Split Pea Soup so I stopped by the market and picked up a few bags.

Judith Dale: What Was Buellton Like During The 1920s
Milt Guggia Jr., whose father purchased both Pea Soup Andersens Buellton in 1999 and Pea Soup Andersens Santa Nella in 2007, was not available for comment. Milt Guggia Enterprises also owns other local eateries like AJ Spurs in Buellton.
Pea Soup Andersens was the brainchild of Anton Andersen from Denmark, and his wife, Juliette, a French woman. In 1924, they established a restaurant renowned for its split-pea soup a secret recipe of Juliettes and named it Andersens Electric Café because it had one of the first electric stoves in the area.
The iconic sign for Pea Soup Andersens in Buellton.
Buellton City Council member John Sanchez, who confirmed the restaurants listing, remarked that since 1924, the property has entertained a hodgepodge of businesses over the years.
Though nostalgic, Sanchez said he sees real potential for its future.
He recalled that the restaurant at one time housed a popular bar that attracted locals, a memorable place where he ceremoniously celebrated his 50th birthday with friends and family.
Its nice as it is, if someone wants to do something more traditional with it, Sanchez said. But it would be nice to see somebody buy it and build something nice, too.
Should the property sell, Sanchez said the Buellton Historical Society, which uses a designated area in the upstairs portion of the restaurant as its headquarters, could possibly relocate to the old Willemsen Dairy property purchased by the City last year for $2 million.

Outside, the mural declares theyve been splitting peas since 1924. Thats because back in June of 1924, Anton and Juliette Andersen first began serving split pea soup and other tasty foods at their small cafe. Originally, their restaurant was called Andersens Electrical Cafe to commemorate their new electric stove . Shortly after opening, their pea soup became quite an attraction and the restaurant became known as Pea Soup Andersens.

Buellton Seal Beach And Andersens Split Pea Soup
Buellton by Curt Cragg and the Buellton Historical Society, An Images of America Book, Arcadia Publishing
Did you know Buellton, 170 miles north of Seal Beach, off Highway 101, is where famous Andersens Split Pea Soup was born?
Nearly 100 years ago, the soup started gaining its fame in a small Buellton cafe on ranch land, once owned by a Vermont man who came west looking for riches in the California Gold Rush.
In 1924, France native and cook, Juliette Andersen, and her Danish husband, Anton, once a top chef at the Biltmore Hotels in New York and Los Angeles, opened Andersens Electrical Cafe to delighted customers along the California coastal road .
She used her French mothers split pea soup recipe to attract customers on what had been part of the huge, R.T Buell Ranch, home to 1,200 dairy cows, 3,500 head of cattle, 700 sheep, 700, hogs, 150 horses plus over 4,200 acres of wheat and grain crops.
People wanted to call the town in Santa Barbara County, Buell, but Oregon already had a city with that name, so it became Buellton. In 1922, the last section of the coastal highway was paved and soon, the Andersens cafe started servicing hungry travelers. Their original split pea soup grew in popularity as visitors told others all over about its wonderful taste.
So many customers, at what became known as Pea Soup Andersens, The Original Home of Split Pea Soup, asked about the ingredients that waitresses handed out cards with the recipe .
