Is cream of mushroom soup gluten free?

The cream of mushroom soup you’d usually buy from the store is NOT gluten free, however there are other great gluten free cream of mushroom soups on the market!

I love Vivian’s Live Again’s cream of mushroom soup because not only is it gluten-free, it is dairy free and vegan.

I love that it comes in a powdered form that you simply mix with water and then bring to a simmer on either the stovetop or in your microwave. Each package makes equivalent to 5 cans of cream of mushroom soup, but it takes up less space in your pantry and it allergy friendly.

It also comes in smaller travel-sized single serve packages, equivalent to one can of cream of mushroom soup.

I also like making my own gluten free cream of mushroom soup. It only takes 5 minutes if you have the ingredients on hand.

Which tuna is gluten free?

Most canned tuna is gluten free. I always check the ingredients, but plain canned tuna should be gluten-free.

With flavored canned tuna, or premixed tuna salad you will have more issues.

Is there a gluten free egg noodle?

Yes, there is! Jovial makes gluten free egg noodles. They come in a tagliatelle shape, so you’ll need to break them up if you want them to be like tradition egg noodle.

You can also break gluten free fettuccine into bite-sized pieces for a similar effect.

Are breadcrumbs gluten free?

How To Make Tuna Mushroom Casserole

Start by cooking the egg noodles according to the package directions. I find that egg noodles are light and perfect for casserole making. After the noodles are cooked combine the noodles, two 6 ounce cans of tuna and the mushrooms in a large bowl.

Combine the milk and the cream of mushroom soup in a bowl. Whisk or stir well to combine. You will want to stir these together completely before combining them with the noodles.

After you have the creamy mushroom sauce combined, you will want to mix it with the noodles.

When all is mixed well together, pour into the baking dish. Toss crackers with melted butter and sprinkle over the casserole. Then pop the casserole into the oven, and bake.

Cook until it has heated through. Then remove it from the oven and enjoy your tuna mushroom casserole.

I recommend solid white albacore tuna in water for this recipe. Either StarKist or Bumble Bee brands are my preference. The albacore tuna has a mild taste than chunk light tuna, and a more firm, solid texture that holds up better when mixed into the dish. Make sure that you drain the tuna really well before combining it with the other ingredients. You don’t want a watery casserole filling!

Just make the casserole as directed but I like to use a tin toil pan for the one going in the freezer.

However, instead of baking, cover with foil and allow to cool.

Once cooled, freeze.

To bake, remove from freezer the day before you want to eat it and allow it to thaw in the refrigerator overnight.

Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour covered, and 15 minutes uncovered. You might have to adjust the time based on your oven.

    Best Tuna Casserole From Scratch

    Party

Tuna Casserole with peas was a staple in our house growing up, and both Barbara and I remember always liking it. However, Barbara was a little hesitant about making it for her girls because she didnt think it would be something they like.

Well on a Friday during Lent, our Mom just happened to be over while Barbara was preparing dinner so she decided to give this easy casserole a try. Moms version of classic tuna casserole is an old-fashioned version containing peas and crushed potato chips on top.

Boy oh boy, is Barbara glad she gave it another shot. It might not be fancy but both girls had two helpings! So Mom for the win.

If you dont have any canned cream soup available, try this tuna casserole with Velveeta.

    Tuna Casserole For Lent

This 1950s tuna casserole has graced our family table for years, especially during the season of Lent.

During Lent, we change up the cream of chicken soup for cream of mushroom or celeryactually we do this whenever we dont have cream of chicken on hand. Our mom always used cream of celery for almost any recipe that called for a can of cream soup!

Heres some simple substitutions and additions to make this classic tuna casserole your own.

    • Switch egg noodles for any type of pasta such as macaroni.
    • Substitute cream of celery or cream of mushroom for cream of chicken.
    • Go non-dairy by using almond milk for regular milk.
    • For an extra creamy tuna casserole, use evaporated milk instead of regular milk.
    • Stir in diced onions to the casserole mixture.
    • Add a cup of your favorite shredded cheese to the mixture.
    • Instead of potato chips, top with crushed butter crackers.
    • Use canned chicken instead of tuna for a chicken noodle casserole.

Notes About Moms Tuna Casserole With Chips

A couple of tips from Barbara when making this tuna casserole from scratch.

    • Par-cook the noodles so they are just slightly under-done. They will finish cooking in the oven once mixed into the rest of the ingredients.
    • Barbara likes the big chunks of the chunk light tuna however, you can use any kind of canned tuna. You might even be able to trick those kiddos who think they dont like tuna into believing its chicken, just saying.
    • We have a deep 1-quart dish that we use for this, but go ahead and use a larger casserole dish. The casserole will just be thinner and may heat through a bit quicker than 30 minutes.
    • Megans husband LOVES cheese so sometimes shell add a cup of shredded cheese to the dish or sprinkle it on top with the chipsor both. She also substitutes mixed veggies for the peas when thats all she has. It becomes a bit of a cheese and tuna medley recipe that way.

Homemade Tuna Noodle Casserole without the Canned Soup

Try topping the casserole with crunchy onions like we do in our green bean casserole recipe.

Add some heat by stirring in a tablespoon or two of sriracha or Franks Red Hot sauce.

Make your future self happy by whipping up a double batch and freezing one pan for later.

Try it with mixed vegetables instead of peas, or canned chicken instead of tuna!

I love this served warm out of the oven, but my husband likes it cold the next day!

    Tuna Casserole With Egg Noodles

As I mentioned earlier, this tuna casserole with egg noodles comes together with just six ingredients: low-sodium canned peas, canned tuna in water, canned cream of mushroom soup, egg noodles, dry bread crumbs, and whole milk. Plus, youll need some butter to mix with the bread crumbs for the topping and a touch more to grease the baking dish.

But the real beauty of this tuna noodle casserole recipe is in its versatility. Dont like peas? Consider canned green beans or carrots instead. Not a fan of tuna noodle casserole with cream of mushroom soup? Try it with canned cream of celery soup its what my mom always used in hers. And she always topped her tuna casserole with potato chips, but I prefer this buttery bread crumb topping. Get creative and make it your own!
