Unboxing Kenley Noodle Soup Bowl Set Two 35 oz Large Bowls with Handles for Japanese Ramen Asian N

Ice cream is the food of my people. I grew up on Cape Cod, where every teenaged townie spends at least one summer scooping ice cream for tourists. I did it myself at the excellent Ben and Bills Chocolate Emporium. But when I set out to test ice cream scoops to find out which one produces the prettiest, most effortless scoops, I thought it best to call a real expert: Jeni Britton Bauer, of Jenis Splendid Ice Creams.

Jeni has been in the business for two decades, owns eight shops, and is the author of two ice cream cookbooks, so she knows her way around a scoop. She has an all-time favorite model that she uses at her shops . In general, she says to choose a model thats all one piece, without moving parts like a release lever. The spring/lever ones don’t work well for American hard body ice cream. Too many pieces and they pop apart when scooping. I don’t recommend them, she wrote in an email.

That narrowed down the field considerably. I also decided to restrict the testing to 2- to 3-ounce ounce scoopers. That way, a heaping ½-cup serving is about two scoops, which feels just right, neither skimpy nor over-the-top.

Starting with Jenis recommendation, I took a look at the brands and models recommended by Cooks Illustrated, The Sweet Home, and The Kitchn, as well as those that are best sellers on Amazon, and gathered a group of seven contenders.

Most Durable: Sumo Ice Cream Scoop

Comfort: 3 out of 3 stars

Ease: 2 out of 3 stars

Release: 1 out of 3 stars

Attractiveness of scoops: 2 1/2 out of 3 stars

Similar to the Oxo scoop in terms of shape, the Sumo Ice Cream Scoop stands out from other scoops for its stainless steel construction, which is a plus because some online user reviews claim that models made from coated plasticlike the Zylisscan flake after long periods of heavy use. Its a solid, well-made model that will last a long time. But like its Oxo companion, the ice cream is more inclined to stick, making for a messy scooping experience. On a more positive note, its available in four fun colors, each of which will brighten up your utensils draw.

Wide and shallow bowls with sloping sides are easy to get around with a spatula, whisk or electric mixer. But you need to be careful, especially when using high speed or you can wind up with splatters of frosting on your countertop or walls. On the other hand, with deep bowls, you need to work harder to get to the bottom but you wont have to worry about spattering.

Our Soup Bowl Buying Guide

A good bowl of warm soup can be filling and satisfying, especially on one of the colder days of the year. But as important as it is to find the perfect soup to fit your craving, you also need the right bowl to hold it.

You may never have given a second thought to the type of bowl you use for your soup. But there are several factors that go into making one ideal. The depth of the bowl is one of the most important factors. Many soup bowls will hold 20 ounces of soup, but you can also find bowls that will hold 30 ounces. A can of Campbells soup is 10.5 ounces, although you also add a can of water to that for a total of about 21 ounces. A can of Progresso soup is 18.5 ounces.

When youre finished eating, your bowl will need to be cleaned. The vast majority of soup bowls can be cleaned in the dishwasher, but its also important to find a bowl that doesnt absorb the tastes and odors of the soup served in them. Porcelain is a popular material for this, but if you opt for porcelain, make sure its strong enough to endure daily use. Thicker porcelain will be able to better withstand cracks and chips.

Best Bowls With Handles [2018]: Stacking Bowls with Handles, Set of 6

Handled soup bowls can be constructed of various materials, including melamine, stainless steel, ceramic, and porcelain. Melamine is extremely durable and very resistant to breaking and cracking. It is also nonporous, so it’s resistant to stains and can be rinsed off. Most melamine soup bowls with handles are BPA free and safe for cleaning in commercial dishwashers. However, melamine should not be used in a microwave as the material could weaken and peel.

Stainless steel is very strong and resistant to rusting, scratching, denting, and staining. It’s convenient to clean and requires almost no maintenance. Handled soup bowls constructed of stainless steel can withstand long-term use.

Ceramic is an umbrella term for materials that are constructed of clay made up of mainly silicon dioxide, aluminum oxide, and water. This clay is then exposed to temperatures higher than 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit in a specialized oven called a kiln, eventually taking shape as a ceramic handled soup bowl. Before or between firings, the ceramic may receive a glaze coating, making it smooth to the touch.

Though it’s a subtype of ceramic, porcelain differs from other ceramics because it’s made with kaolin. Kaolin is a fine-grained, smooth clay named after the village in China where the making of porcelain originated. Porcelain is thin and strong with a white finish. It’s nonporous and covered with a clear glaze that makes the color pop.

What Makes A Great Ice Cream Scoop

Comfort: Only one scoop was a complete flop. Most of the scoops performed well, especially in comfort and ease of scooping. A few that were otherwise great ran into trouble on releasing the ice cream the colder they got, the harder it became to get the ice cream out of the container. A few were too large or blunt to get into nooks and crannies at the bottom of the carton.

Weight: The scoops fell into two general categories: light and heavy. Three were in the 4- to 4.5-ounce range and four were in the 8- to 8.5-ounce range. But design mattered more than weight. There were winners and losers in both groupsa well-designed heavy scoop can give leverage cutting through hard ice cream. A well-designed light scoop can feel more comfortable and nimble.

Features: Two of the scoops have heat-conducting or defrosting fluid sealed inside the handle: Supposedly, that fluid transfers heat from your hand on the handle to the bowl, warming it just enough so that it glides smoothly through the ice cream and then releases the ice cream easily from the bowl. Both performed wellone better than the otherthough the downside is that you cant put them in the dishwasher. However, washing an ice cream scoop by hand really isnt much of a hardship, so I didnt hold that against those models.
