History Of The Bullitt Mustang

It all began because of the 1968 thriller film Bullitt. It features an incredible 11-minute car chase between a souped-up Mustang GT 390 Fastback and a Dodge Charger through San Francisco. Steve McQueen and his Mustang finally overtook the powerful Charger and ran it off the road. Heres a video of the famous chase scene:

Rumor has it that the Hollywood engineers modified the ignition, carburetors, and cylinder heads in the two Mustangs used during the filming of that scene to make the chase closer. The scene made the Mustang, which was launched only four years earlier, a pop culture icon.

33 years later, in 2001, Ford rolled out a special edition of the Mustang GT and called it Bullitt. They built it to resemble the high-performance nature of the modified 1968 GT 390 Fastback in the movie.

Ford released newer versions in 2008 and 2009 and ceased production after that. However, theres a rumor going around that Ford is planning on releasing a 2018 or 2019 version of the Bullitt Mustang. In early December 2017, an eagle-eyed user at the Mustang6g.com forums spotted a new Mustang prototype that looked suspiciously like the Bullitt. Its dark green paint color was similar, if not identical, to the Bullitts famous Dark Highland Green paint. The unique 5-spoke Torq Thrust wheels and lack of badging were other hints to the Bullitt Mustangs possible comeback.

All In The Name Of Cleaning Up The Environment

The guys from Adventures With Purpose recently braved the frigid waters of a Portland, Oregon river to drag a Mazda RX-7 up to the surface. As it turns out, that was one of just six classic vehicles they found at the edge of this boat launch, so now they’ve returned to clean up the riverbed a little more by pulling another car from the murky water. This time, they believe they’ve hooked up to a 1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1!

The first attempt to bring this Mustang to the surface resulted in the engine being ripped from the transmission and being brought to shore by itself, and the V8 sported some long-tube headers suggest that this was a souped-up car before it was unceremoniously dumped in the river. On the second try, the crew is successful in bringing the Mustang to the surface, where the unmistakable SportsRoof body style is instantly obvious.

Years spent underwater resulted in extensive rot to this body, but this Mustang fastback design at least seemed to have held its distinctive shape. That is until the car packed full of mud approached dry land. While there’s nothing left of the car to save, there’s no doubt that it does help preserve the river and its ecosystem a little longer.

Shelby American used the Barrett-Jackson showcase to launch its 2015 Shelby GT, its souped-up version of the new Ford Mustang.

Carroll Shelby was famous for his Ford-powered Shelby Cobras and was called on by Henry Ford II to turn the original Mustang into a competitive race car. Shelby American produced various enhanced Mustangs GT350, etc. and built some 8,000 Shelby GTs based on the 2007-08 Mustang.

In addition to Shelby-designed exterior components such as a carbon fiber hood with functional air vents and aero-body enhancements including a two-piece rear diffuser , the newest Shelby GT features a Ford Racing supercharger and chrome-tipped Borla exhaust system to boost the Mustangs 5.0-liter V-8 engines output to 627 horsepower, making this the most powerful Shelby GT produced.

Shelby installs 3:73 gears with performance Ford Racing half-shafts, a Ford Racing performance suspension kit, staggered Weld Racing Shelby Venice wheels and grippy Michelin tires. Wildwood six-piston front brakes help keep things under control.

Shelby American can apply its Shelby GT unit to Mustang GTs with either manual or automatic gearboxes, and promises the cars are 50-state legal.
