How to Make Swedish Meatballs | Swedish Recipe | Allrecipes.com

A crockpot is a staple in our house. We actually have more than one crockpot as each meets a different need for our family of 6.

I used a programmable 6-quart crockpot for this recipe. A smaller one needs you to cut the recipe in half.

Mine is an original model from years ago in white which came with a second, divided crock.

Soon, I plan to order a new one: a 6-quart programmable cook n carry so we can take it on the road. The lid locks into place for transport.

This will make our annual Soup dinners at our church less messy compared to a crock that lets it all slosh around.

If you want a quick clean up of your crockpot, grab a crock pot linerbefore adding the ingredients.

These are wonderful for when dish patrol comes around. And, for some dishes like my Red Beans and Rice, it means no staining of my white crockpot.

When it comes to transporting your awesome Swedish meatballs, you need a way to do it.

No one wants to put have some of your wonderful dish end up sloshing around in the car or getting cold.

Even if you have a locking crockpot, a Crockpot carrier will help insulate everything.

Plus it is a lot easier to hold onto the carrier than just the crockpot.

I have used a travel carrier just like this one and love how well it helps keep my dishes together.

This Easy Swedish Meatballs Cream Of Mushroom Soup And Frozen Meatballs Recipe Makes Dinner Time A Breeze

We love to use frozen meatballs because they make it so easy. You can certainly use homemade meatballs though if you prefer.

The crock pot is so easy and you can also use the instant pot. The seasonings are great and we have even added worcestershire sauce, nutmeg and allspice.

Just use what you have for this traditional swedish meatballs crockpot.

What Kind Of Frozen Meatballs Should You Use

Again, its very important to use unseasoned, original meatballs. Avoid using Italian-style meatballs if you can. Its not a total deal breaker, but this Swedish sauce will taste better on plain meatballs vs. seasoned ones and will be more authentic.

You can even use vegetarian meatballs or meatballs made with ground turkey if youre looking for a lighter option. I find that the medium to higher priced meatballs do have better flavor but in this case, the Swedish sauce will overpower the flavor of the meatballs themselves more so than meatballs with red sauce. So you dont have to worry too much about the taste of the meatballs other than checking the ingredient list and nutrition facts.

  • What Is Swedish Meatball Sauce Made Of

Traditionally, the sauce served over Swedish meatballs is made by combining beef broth with heavy cream, flour, and sour cream to create a gravy-like topping. But that cooking method takes a lot of time and effort!

To make this recipe a little easier, just add some cream of mushroom soup to the sour cream! Youll get a delicious sauce that tastes just like the traditional Swedish meatball topping. And the best part is that theres no cooking involved! All you have to do is combine the sauce ingredients in a bag and toss the bag in the freezer until youre ready to start cooking.

How To Make Swedish Meatballs With Frozen Meatballs

Frozen Meatballs Yes you could of course make your own but that kind of defeats the whole purpose of this recipe being easy. I have to put a shoutout to the best frozen meatballs ever here and those are the Costco ones. They sell a giant bag of Italian style meatballs that are so delicious. The membership alone is worth it just for those meatballs. Or just pick up a bag from the grocery store. Any kind of frozen meatball works here Italian style, homestyle, etc.

Beef Broth I have tested the recipe with full salt beef broth and it was too much salt when combined with the condensed soup and gravy packet. Use the 50% reduced sodium beef broth. But of course, as always, use regular beef broth if thats what you prefer.

Cream of Mushroom Soup I dont even like mushrooms but I love this ingredient in these meatballs. The whole point of Swedish meatballs is that creamy gravy sauce and the cream of mushroom soup adds creaminess and rich flavor with the mushrooms.

Brown Gravy Packet Adds tons of flavor with just one packet.

    Water

    Garlic Powder

Evaporated Milk I wanted to add some type of creamy element. Sour cream is the usual ingredient in a Swedish meatballs recipe but I find that it makes the sauce chunky with bits of sour cream instead of smooth. The evaporated makes the sauce so smooth and creamy.

Can I Substitute The Cream Of Mushroom Soup

Swedish Meatballs with Homemade Mushroom Soup
    • I know not everyone loves this ingredient and I will be honest and say that this is the only recipe on my site that uses this ingredient. With that said, I dont even like mushrooms but I love this ingredient in this meatball recipe. You could try making homemade cream of mushroom soup or try using a different creamed soup like cream of celery or cream of onion. It will probably change the flavor slightly so I cant say for sure what the results would be if you used a different creamed soup.

Swedish Meatballs With Cream Of Mushroom Soup

There is something special about Swedish meatballs with cream of mushroom soup. The depth and richness of mushroom soup takes meatballs to the next level that cant be replicated by other ingredients. Whenever possible, I make my own cream of mushroom soup, but a can of store-bought soup will do the trick. A cup of the soup is enough for this recipe but you can easily add another half a cup if you like.

To introduce some color and acidity, and more flavor, I like adding a tablespoon or two of Worcestershire to the mushroom sauce, but thats totally optional in this recipe.

The trick to making the Swedish meatballs more flavorful is to roast bread crumbs before mixing them with ground meat. Very few recipes that Ive seen recommend doing and thats a big omission. Seriously, follow this tip and you will understand what I am talking about. It only takes a few extra minutes.
