Low Sodium Split Pea Soup

Let The Soup Cool Before Worrying About The Thickness

how to make a low in sodium split pea soup

This is one of the peculiarities of split peas. Your soup will thicken a lot as it cools. When you stir and it is still hot you will probably find that this soup is too thin. But I warn you, dont cook it to thicken it if you havent let it cool first. Once it has cooled down enough to serve you will see that the soup has become much thicker. Thats the trap of this recipe if youve never done it before.

Pacific Foods Organic Roasted Red Pepper & Tomato Soup Light In Sodium

Sodium content: 330 mg per 1-cup serving

Pacific foods soups are all organic, with as many ingredients being sourced as locally as possible. Their organic roasted red pepper and tomato soup light in sodium provides 330 milligrams of sodium per serving and is naturally packed with an antioxidant called lycopene. This antioxidant naturally occurs in tomatoes and has been found to support heart health.

Light In Sodium Soups: Chunky Tomato Bisque And Minestrone

It seems like its been a long time since we reviewed products from Amys. I spotted a new item in the freezer case and spent a few minutes trying to find another meal we hadnt reviewed, until I saw the sodium level in the one Id picked up: their new Thai Red Curry bowl has 780 milligrams of sodium. Nope. Thats way more salt than a 420-calorie lunch meal should have. I put it back, then it occurred to me that perhaps there were Amys soups that we hadnt reviewed.

The soup section of the store yielded far more reasonable results: todays soups, from their Light in Sodium line, have less than 350 milligrams of sodium per serving. As usual, a single can of soup is labeled to be 2 servings, but you and I know this is just silly: nobodys going to eat only half the can of soup.

The tasting panel opted to try the Chunky Tomato Bisque first. On first sip, this is an excellent soup: it has a bright red color and bright tomato flavor, with a hint of onion and chunks of tomato for texture. The addition of just enough cream to this soup does little more than add richness and cut the acidity of the tomato base. With all the tomato flavor, its clear that theres plenty of salt in this soup, and at 130 calories, 340 milligrams of sodium, and 3 grams of fiber , we were all set to give this a thumbs up.

Cook Toroughly Your Split Peas

The most important thing to make this recipe a success is to cook split peas long enough. This means being patient and not attacking the pot with your hand mixer after just 30 minutes of simmering. This is often the time needed for the usual soup, but for this one you need to abstain and wait at least 1.5 hours. To our taste, the split peas are soft enough to make a smooth soup after 2 hours. If you do it too early, it wont be as smooth as it should.

Healthiest Bone Broth: Pacific Organic Chicken Bone Broth

Healthy Slow Cooker Split Pea Soup

Sipping on bone broth is a great way to heal your gut. After animal bones are simmered in water, their collagen turns into a rich broth full of gelatin. When we ingest it, it acts as an intestinal Band-Aid, protecting and healing the lining of the digestive tract which aids digestion and helps us absorb extra nutrients from the foods we eat, explains nutritionist Lauren Slayton, MS, RD. Besides the fact that Pacifics bone broth is lower in calories and sodium than that of Kitchen Basics, we also like their addition of cider vinegar to the brothwhich Slayton also recommends. Apple cider vinegar is another ingredient that will further improve your digestion thanks to it containing active enzymes.

Substitutions For Split Pea Soup

Heres the substitutions and additions you can make for this meatless split pea soup. Please remember that when you make substitutions, it will change the nutrition data you see below in the recipe card.

  • Veggies You can swap or omit any of the veggies in this recipe to your liking. The combination below really works well and makes the most flavorful recipe so just know that it you omit or swap any of the veggies that the flavor may not be the same.
  • Protein You can add ham or another protein to this recipe. Simply add the protein when you simmer the soup in step 3 for 45 minutes.
  • Broth Any broth or stock may be used. I always use low sodium.
  • Spices You can swap or omit any of the spices. Again, the combination I have in the recipe makes the best split pea soup flavor so if you change them I cannot guarantee the same results.
  • Split Peas If you dont have green split peas for split pea soup, you can use yellow split peas instead or lentils would be a good substitute. I love this lentil soup!

The Gold Standard In Organic Food Since 1987

Amys Kitchen is one of the first companies to make organic, healthy food popular and accessible. They use sustainably-harvested, organic, and non-GMO ingredients for their ready-made meals, soups, and sauces. Why? Because its not only better for people, its far kinder to our planet. Amys sources from local California farms whenever possible to support the community and keep their carbon footprint low. Plus, they were one of the first to use BPA-free, recyclable aluminum cans for their products. These common practices are only common because of Amys. In fact, the USDA looked to Amys when they were setting organic and environmental standards.

  • recyclable packaging

One of the first companies to use recyclable cans without BPA lining, you might say Amys is the gold standard in sustainable packaging.

  • responsible sourcing

The ingredients in Amys products are sourced from local organic farms when possible. Their meals are always vegetarian because eating and farming meat has major environmental consequences.

When you crave warm, creamy comfort foods, grab your slow cooker and simmer a batch of homemade split pea soup. Split peas pack a potent dose of protein, hunger-filling fiber, and heart-healthy antioxidants all for less than 300 calories a bowl. My go-to split pea soup recipe originally came from Taste of Home. While I love the ease of tossing the ingredients into a slow cooker, the salty flavor overwhelmed me. I recommend using low-sodium chicken broth and adding diced celery. Vegetarians feel free to leave out the ham and add low-sodium vegetable broth. The smoked ham hock in this creamy Split Pea Soup gives it a great smoky flavor. Why Should You Buy Low

If you have ever eaten a salty dinner and woken up with bloated “sausage fingers”, you already know the effects that eating too much sodium can immediately have on your body. Aside from unpleasant bloat, eating too much sodium puts you at risk for developing serious medical conditions, like high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Guidelines from the 20152020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that Americans consume less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day as part of a healthy eating pattern. However, the majority of adults in the US eat more sodium than they shouldan average of more than 3,400 mg each daywith more than 70 percent coming from processed food and restaurant meals according to the report.
