The holiday season is the time of year when seeing friends and family is hard to avoid. We also find ourselves with more vacation days during these winter months. However, even though these two holiday realities suggest cheer and relaxation, they dont always mean were taking the necessary time to slow down and appreciate what really matters. Instead of just eating and drinking your way through the next weeks, why not harness the holiday spirit and take a pause to help your fellow New Yorkers in need? There are hundreds of opportunities to volunteer from now through the New Year, and the list weve compiled below is a good place to start.

Soup Kitchens In New York City Volunteer di 2020

St. Johns Bread & Life, the largest soup kitchen in Brooklyn, provides 3,000 meals a day to New Yorkers in need. Photo: St. Johns Bread & Life

One in five residents in Brooklyn is food insecure, meaning they lack reliable access to affordable, nutritious meals. That is 20% of the population of your neighbors. Isnt that insane? Isnt that just insane? These are our neighbors, until their living situations become untenable and they are pushed out by rising rents and developers and one missed financial step.

If you look around Brooklyn there is always a new restaurant, a new bar, a new shop selling cool succulent plants and what is that, a beautiful woven throw from a visit to Tulum? But there are also people who live in Brooklyn, call it home and will continue to, before and after all of these enterprises and every seemingly crucial all-day brightly painted café and wellness outlet. I like food, I like drinks, I like breathing and stretching. But I like it more when other people have food.

Emergency food providers are all over this borough, some offer weekly meals or pantries, some are open daily. What they all have in common is the desire to address the need in their communities. They are compelled to help their neighbors.

    Description

Founded in 1983, Food Bank For New York City operates the country’s largest food bank, providing community food programs throughout the five boroughs of New York City with food, related products and support services. Today we distribute more than 51 million pounds of food every year to over 1,200 community-based programs that serve free meals to the City’s hungry. These programs include soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, senior centers, low-income day care centers and other nonprofit programs that reach out to people in need of food. Operating out of our Bronx-based warehouse Food Bank For New York City collects, inspects, and distributes millions of pounds of food. Food Bank For New York City also provides support services to the City’s emergency food providers by hosting nutrition and food safety workshops, networking sessions and other education initiatives. We use our central role in the City’s anti-hunger effort to provide legislators, advocates and the media with information about hunger in the City so that they may formulate effective policy and heighten public awareness of this important issue. How Volunteering At A Soup Kitchen Changed Stephen Henderson’s Life And Inspired His New Book

Stephen Henderson’s book, The 24-Hour Soup Kitchen: Soul-Stirring Lessons in Gastrophilanthropy, is available now, with 100% of proceeds benefiting Food Bank for New York City

When Stephen Henderson was traveling on assignment to New Delhi, India to cover the country’s fashion week as a journalist years ago, he never expected to come across a soup kitchen that would change his life forever. Stumbling upon it after partnering with a young design student who acted as a guide during his visit, Henderson was intrigued by the volunteer-run operation.

” was run by volunteers who dont know from day to day what food is going to show up or who’s going to show up to cook it. But they know that 20,000 people are going to show up to eat it,” he shares with PEOPLE.

Astonished by the soup kitchen’s efforts, he arranged to go back to New Delhi where he cooked for a week, and thus his interest in what he describes as “mass cookery” began.

Now, 10 years since his initial visit to the country’s soup kitchen, and with many more volunteer efforts both domestic and in countries such as Israel and South Korea under his belt, Henderson has written his own book The 24-Hour Soup Kitchen: Soul-Stirring Lessons in Gastrophilanthropy where he details the different ways in which people in need across the globe are fed by soup kitchens.

Recognizing that soup kitchens need help 365 days a year, Henderson continued to travel the world to spread kindness.
