The Cleveland Story Behind One Of Your Favorite Boxes Of Soup
CLEVELAND, OH – You always have boxes of Mrs. Weiss’ Soup Mix in your cupboard and you’re not always exactly sure why, but the soup is a winter staple in Clevelander’s diets.
The chicken flavor old fashioned noodle soup is usually priced around $1 to $2 a box. Another noodle variety, kluski, is available in a blue box, too.
The soup mix has a long history in Cleveland that dates back to 1923.
The noodle business was founded by Hungarian immigrants Gaspar and Bertha Weiss who originally sold Bertha’s noodles to Cleveland’s restaurants, according to Encyclopedia of Cleveland History.
The credit for Mrs. Weiss’ soup goes to Bertha and Gaspar’s son Albert. He introduced the dry noodle with seasoning packages we’re all familiar with today.
he business eventually expanded to a building at 2101 Woodland Ave. in 1937 and it unfortunately burned down in 1961. A new building at that location is currently being used for the Boy Scouts of America Lake Erie Council at Woodland Avenue and East 22nd Street.
After the fire, the company moved to Solon.
Since its inception, the company has continued to profit and grow.
After becoming part of the Hershey Pasta Group in 1993, sales were estimated between $1 million and $4.9 million, according to Case Western Reserve University.
The boxes of soup and varieties of noodles are available at most grocery stores in Northeast Ohio including Giant Eagle and Marc’s. .

Easy Chicken Noodle Soup Recipe Tip
I have tried different types of noodles, and my favorite type to use is kluski. They may be a mid-western thing, because my cousin, who lives in Texas, cant get them. In my humble opinion, they are as close to homemade as you can get out of a bag. The brand doesnt matterIve used Inn Maid, Mrs. Weiss, and also local Amish-made noodles. They are all delicious!
How Do I Make Crock Pot Chicken Noodle Soup
- In a medium skillet, season chicken breasts with salt and pepper. Cooking the chicken just to sear it.
- Place the chicken in a 6 quart slow cooker.
- Add chicken broth, minced garlic, dried onion, carrots, celery, dried thyme, bay leaves and additional salt and pepper.
- Cover and cook on low heat for 4-6 hours.
- Remove chicken and shred, using two forks.
- Remove the bay leaves and discard.
- Add in Mrs. Weiss Noodles, and the chicken.
- Put the lid back on and cook on low heat for an additional 35-40 minutes, or until the noodles are done to the taste.
- Add parsley if desired.
- Do not allow the soup to keep cooking otherwise the noodles go soggy.
I remember when I first got married, chicken soup was one of the very first recipes that I learned to make. Growing up, my mother worked outside of the home, and we always had chicken soup out of a can. I guess that it is a good thing that I know how to cook, because, sometimes that might be the only way that you can get your kids to come back home.
If you cook it, they will come. Wow, there are so many wonderful things to make, but you can never go wrong with Crock pot chicken noodle soup. Just dont overcook it. Also, you can use any noodle that you like, just make sure to test them to make sure that they are done do not overcook them!

Crock pot chicken noodle soup is so good for the body and good for the soul. I love having a warm bowl of soup now that the weather has gotten a little colder. It seems like I want to make soup every day. For me that is fine, but for my son that doesnt care for soup, not so much. Well maybe he deserves it. I made cookies today and what did he call them? Ya they wont be going on the blog. Ha ha.
I guess the thing that I love the most about a crock pot and soup, you can forget about it, go about your day, come back in a few hours and there is the most wonderful dinner ever!! Oh ya I like to make a little fluffy cornbread to go with it. That is heaven on earth.
Well, I looked out the window and what did I see? I saw snow on top of the mountain! I hope that we get just a little bit more fall. It does get dark early and with daylight savings time coming, it will be getting dark at 5:00 pm! I am not ready for that. I cant complain, I know that Alaska has it dark a lot longer than we do. What can I say, I just like light.
