We give and we give and this is the thanks we get: a No. 12 ranking on a list of “Most Generous Cities.“

And that’s not too shabby, since the survey looked at the largest 130 cities in the U.S., which means we cracked the top 10 percent.

A total of 13 factors were examined by Lawnstarter and placed into two general “generosity” categories individual, and community.

We were No. 7 in the community sector, which looked at things such as soup kitchens, homeless shelters and food banks.

In the individual section, which focused on volunteer work and charitable giving, we were No. 25.

Of our major neighbors, we were bested by Indianapolis and Chicago , but finished ahead of Cincinnati , Kansas City , Memphis , Nashville and Louisville .

The most generous city was Minneapolis the least, Hialeah, Fla.

The St Louis Area Foodbank Is Using Volunteerhub To Manage Volunteers Communicate With Partners Fill Opportunities And Increase Impact

St. Louis Area Foodbank has steadily grown to be the largest food distribution charity serving eastern Missouri and southwestern Illinois. The nonprofit opened in 1975 and provides services with the goal of increasing access to nutritious food while improving the quality of life for individuals in need throughout the organizations 26-county service territory. The St. Louis Area Foodbank has strategic partnerships with a robust network of community partners that include food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and residential programs.

Last year alone, St. Louis Area Foodbank, a member of Feeding America, provided more than 35 million meals to families in need of food assistance in the bi-state region. Volunteers at the Foodbank provide support in several key capacities including sorting food and packaging boxes. The St. Louis Area Foodbank elicits the help of over 16,500 volunteers annually.

Our volunteers program production is equivalent to 24 full-time employeesthe value add is huge, said Mary Cooper, Office Service Coordinator, St. Louis Area Foodbank.

In 2017, volunteers at the St. Louis Area Foodbank packaged over 5.6 million pounds of food. Supporters of the organization have a substantial opportunity to make a quantifiable impact. Growing numbers of volunteers and corporate sponsorship caused the Foodbank to explore management software to eliminate barriers.

Homelessness In The United States

According to data as of 2018, U.S. homelessness still has high numbers on a single night. The National Alliance to End Homelessness says 552,830 people experienced homelessness. Of this number, 180,413 were people in families, and 372,417 were individuals. Families often experience homelessness due to a financial crisis. These can be a medical emergency, death in the family, or a car accident. Certain situations prevent families from keeping their homes. They usually need help to find jobs, housing, or assistance with rent.

Approximately 15 percent of homeless people are homeless for long periods of time. The number of chronically homeless people in the U.S. has declined by 21 percent since 2010. Unfortunately, there are still plenty of people living on the streets or in shelters. These people could use your help, especially during the colder months.

Feed My People’s mission is to show God’s love and compassion to all His people, but particularly to His people in need. We are a Christian Food Pantry and Thrift Store located in both South County, St. Louis and High Ridge Missouri.

Everyone needs help from time to time. No matter who you are, what background you come from – or your age, tough times can come. Feed My People, is here to help you weather the storm.

The situations are many. Whether it is short term or you need help getting food in the long haul, count on Feed My People for so many situations.

Volunteering At Helping Hands

Volunteers are always needed to assist in our soup kitchen, clothing center and food pantry. Please contact Helping Hands of St. Louis if you or your group/organization would like to volunteer.

Opportunities include:

• Cooking and serving meals at the soup kitchen. Groups from area churches and organizations serve meals on a monthly or bi-monthly basis. Please contact us to see if there is an opening in the schedule.
• Sorting and hanging clothing and assisting clients with shopping in the clothing center on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
• Making scheduled pickups of food donations from area grocery stores and food banks. A good driving record and insurance is required.
• Assisting with client intake at the food pantry is needed. Volunteers must be knowledgeable with Microsoft Office and have people skills.

Happily, one fall tradition that many local families value is volunteerism, and giving back to the community. As the Missouri Agency Relations Manager, my job at the Foodbank is to serve as the connection between our organization and the food pantries, soup kitchens and residential facilities in the community that distribute the product that they receive from our warehouse. During the holiday season, I receive a multitude of requests on a weekly basis from service-minded individuals looking for their chance to lend a hand at one of the Foodbanks agencies. The abundance of giving from the community is heartwarming, and I am pleased to steer them in the direction of a fun service opportunity.

One great way to give back is to volunteer at a pantry or soup kitchen in your area in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving and Christmas. During this time, much of the vital prep work is being put in to build holiday baskets, and facilitate the other holiday distributions that make this time of year so special for clients. Helping Hands Of St Louis

Helping Hands of St. Louis, a ministry of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Toledo, is located at 443 Sixth St., Toledo, Ohio, serves low-income and homeless families and individuals. The Outreach Center includes a Soup Kitchen, Food Pantry and Clothing Center. Additional services include providing hygiene packs to families and hot showers and hygiene and snack kits to the homeless.

Since 1982, Helping Hands has served more than 1.5 million meals to people in need. An average of 250 meals are now served each day, Monday through Friday, through the generosity of local community members and businesses and through the dedication of our volunteer teams.

Habitat for Humanity Saint Louis gives families who live in substandard rental housing the opportunity to build and purchase their own homes. They assist the construction staff, organize supplies, photograph building activities, and work in the ReStore that resells donated building materials.

Food is the most basic of human needs and yet an increasing number of people in our area go to bed hungry at night and wake up wondering where their next meal will come from. Please help O.A.S.I.S. continue to help those less fortunate in St. Charles County.

We have no paid personnel at O.A.S.I.S. Over 90% of your donation is passed on in the form of food and hygiene items to families in need.

Whatever you choose to give, be assured that the O.A.S.I.S. volunteers will work hard to maximize the good that your gift provides to those who come to us for assistance.

1. Make A Donation

The recently enacted government stimulus bill adds a new above-the-line tax deduction allowing an individual who does not itemize to deduct up to $300 of cash donation to a qualified public non-profit 501 charity like O.A.S.I.S. This is in addition to the standard deduction.

This new $300 deduction is specifically for those who dont itemize their deductions and would typically not get any tax benefit for donations. Since its considered an above-the-line deduction, the IRS applies it when calculating your Adjusted Gross Income .

2. Hold a Food Drive

Donate To Local Soup Kitchens

Besides serving food at local soup kitchens, in-kind donations are also needed. Food banks and soup kitchens are always looking for donations such as:

• Canned goods, especially carrots, peas, green beans, and beans.

• Canned fruit, especially sliced apples, peaches, pineapples, and mixed fruit.

• Coffee creamer, sugar/sweetener, and teabags.

• Personal care products for men and women, including shampoo and soap.

• Napkins, tissues, dish soap, laundry detergent.

• Clothing such as hats, mittens, and scarves.

Feeding America is another great resource for finding local food banks in your area. They secure and distribute more than 3 billion meals throughout the U.S. each year.

FoodPantries.org is a third resource which allows you to search for soup kitchens. Use this to find nonprofit organizations committed to fighting hunger.
