How To Make Canned Tomato Soup Taste Better
I love homemade meals just as much as the next person, but Im also a big fan of meal shortcuts for busier nights especially when it tastes almost like homemade. I think a lot of you are like that, too based on the popularity of our How to Make Canned Refried Beans Taste Better article!
I dont know of too many people who rave over a plain can of tomato soup I sure dont. However, there are a few small adaptations you can make to take it from blah to having no leftovers.
My kids go CRAZY over these ways weve made canned tomato soup better. Just the other night when I made it, my son was so sad we didnt have any leftovers, and he kept telling me how much he loved it. It was really that good, and it tasted better than really any tomato soup Ive had from restaurants or at the store.

Tips For Making Tomato Soup With Tomato Sauce
Making tomato soup at home is easy, but there are a few things you can do to make sure it turns out perfectly every time. Here are our top tips:
Adding Acid For Canning
As I mentioned, acid is incredibly important in making sure your homemade canned tomato soup will stay shelf-stable.
To really make sure the acid level is right, it is common to add lemon juice or citric acid to the jars when you are canning anything tomato related.
You might be worried that lemon juice would affect the flavor of the soup. It does, but only slightly. And your soup wont taste lemony at all. Rather, it just tastes slightly brighter.
Citric acid doesnt alter the flavor of the soup at all. So if youre concerned about the lemon flavor, use citric acid.
However, there is another factor. When you add milk to the tomato soup that had citric acid in it, the milk separated a little. When added to the soup that had lemon juice, the milk separation was barely noticeable.
Id rather have a slightly brighter soup with less milk separation. Choose which route is best for your tastes!

Key Ingredients And Their Substitutions
To make tomato soup from tomato paste, we needTomato paste– This is store-bought readymade tomato paste. You can use any of your favorite brands. This tomato paste can be substituted with homemade tomato puree.Almond milk– I have added almond milk to defuse the bold taste of the tomato. Ideally, this tomato soup tastes creamy and rich when butter is added. But almond milk does the same role of butter, and give an aspect to the soup. Basil– This is the flavoring agent here. You can substitute with cilantro, sage, mint, etc.
Can You Freeze This Tomato Soup Recipe
This recipe makes a whole big pot of soup so if youre not going to use all of it you can freeze it for another meal!
The best way to freeze any sup with dairy is to leave the dairy product out of the last step. If youre using heavy cream the soup will freeze fine but milk is better when added fresh to the recipe.
Once you defrost your soup just heat in a pot until warm, stir in the whole milk and serve!
This soup recipe can be on the table in less than 30, so you can make it ahead of time or make it right before you need dinner! This isnt one of those recipes that gets better as it sits so if you need dinner ASAP, this is the soup for you!

What Kind Of Tomatoes To Use
I use either Cento tomato puree or Pomi strained tomatoes. Both are Italian brands. Cento is easier to find in regular supermarkets. They are sweeter and less acidic than American brands. If using an American brand such as Muir Glen Tomato Puree, you might need to add a small amount of a sweetener to balance out the acidity of the tomatoes.

Tomato Paste Instead Of Tomato Sauce
If you have a can of tomato paste in your pantry, you are in luckthis is the best substitution for tomato sauce. All you need is the tomato paste and water.
Mix together 1 part tomato paste and 1 part water until well blended. Then, season your “sauce” to taste. Tomato sauce is typically seasoned with herbs, garlic, and onion. You may even find the sauce benefits from a drizzle of olive oil or a pinch of sugar.
For the most authentic tomato sauce taste, cook the garlic and onion in oil until they’re soft, add the tomato paste and water mixture, and heat through. Taking the time to add a few extra ingredients will greatly enhance the flavor and texture of your finished sauce.

How To Make Tomato Juice At Home
Tomato juice can be easily found at the market and many people tend to buy and store it for later use.
But if you dont have any its easy to find a replacement. All you need is a bag of tomatoes and a blender to create your own juice at home.
You can use the ripest tomatoes that you have and you need some sugar to balance the acidity. You can add extra seasoning, onion, salt, and black pepper for additional taste.
It is very easy and fast, and also youll find a good use for those ripped tomatoes instead of throwing them out.
Ketchup In Pizza Sauce
Ketchup may not be in the recipe listing for Grecos Pizza but is unmistakenly tasted in the sauce, especially with the Cheeseburger Oven sub. This discovery is what lead to the creation of my version of a Cheeseburger Oven Sub, which is one of the products that Greco does a really nice job on.
It could be that the Tomato Paste, Water, Citric Acid along with the spices is what creates the ketchup flavor.
Add a small amount of Ketchup. It isnt much, almost unnoticeable, just to lift the flavors a bit. I tend to stick with Frenchs Ketchup or Heinz Chili Sauce.

Why Youll Love This Roasted Tomato Pasta Sauce
- This recipe isnt super hands on. Other than slicing the tomatoes, which you could actually skip if you want, youre really just waiting for the tomatoes to roast.this is reason number two.
- The process of roasting the tomatoes transforms their flavor and brings out their natural sweetness. Its amazing with fresh summer tomatoes, but it even works in the winter months when tomatoes arent at their best.
- Juices from the tomatoes work with the starches from pasta water to create a light and slightly creamy sauce.

Sprinkle In Some Herbs
Take advantage of dried herbs and add some Italian seasoning. The blend is typically a combination of oregano, basil, marjoram, rosemary, and thyme, so you dont have to individually source each one.
If you have fresh herbs, feel free to use them. Simply add 3 times the dried amount listed, about 1 ½ teaspoons. Blooming these herbs in oil releases more fat-soluble flavor compounds, adding even more essence to the soup as it simmers.
