Salisbury Steak Loaves with Onions & Gravy
  • This recipe comes together in about 30 minutes. First things first, melt the butter in a large skillet and add in your onions along with some Worcestershire and a little of your beef broth. The onions will cook, you can stir occasionally, for about 6-8 minutes until they’re nice and golden.
  • I like to make my patties while the onions are cooking. Mix up your ground beef, egg, seasonings, and breadcrumbs in a large bowl. Roll the meat into 5 balls, then shape them into patties and set them aside on a plate.
  • When the onions golden, leave them in the pan and just kind of scoot them around to make room for the patties. Get the beef in there and sear for 4 minutes on each side until starting to brown, then remove them onto a clean plate.
  • Now give the onions a stir and sprinkle over the flour. Keep stirring for just about one minute to cook the flour. Then you can slowly pour in your beef broth while using a wooden spoon to scrape up any bits on the bottom of the pan. You’ll only need to take 1-2 minutes to do this part, the gravy will continue to thicken while simmering with the meat.
  • Reduce the heat on your stove to medium-low, scoot the onions around and add the patties back to the pan. Now, you’ll top each with a slice of cheese and the parmesan. The parmesan is optional, and you can use mozzarella, gouda, or white cheddar in place of the provolone if preferred. Cover your pan and simmer for 6-8 minutes until your patties are cooked through.

French Onion Cubed Steak

This one is so easy. The gravy it makes is worth the effort and is great on top of the steak, on mashed potatoes or my favorite, onion flavored new potatoes . A nice garden salad completes this quick meal. Increase portions to meet

1/3 c all purpose flour
salt and pepper, to taste
2 Tbsp butter

Steps:

  • 1. Sprinkle both sides of steak with salt and pepper, to your taste. Then dredge steaks in flour, covering completely and patting to make sure flour sticks to meat.
  • 2. Melt butter in large, non-stick fry pan over medium-high heat. Place steaks in melted butter and brown on both sides. Sprinkle onion soup mixture over the steaks, followed by water and wine. Reduce heat to low and let simmer for about 10-15 minutes. Thin with more water, if needed.
  • 3. Serve while hot, covering with the gravy.

How To Make Salisbury Steak

  • Make the patty mixture. Combine patty ingredients using your hands, until just mixed well.
  • Form the patties. Divide the meat mixture into 6 equal-sized portions and shape into ovals.
  • Sear. Cook the patties about 4-5 minutes per side , then transfer to a plate and keep warm.
  • Cook onions and mushrooms. Cooking them in the same pan means all those glorious browned bits from the patties will add so much flavor to the pan sauce youre about to create!
  • Add other gravy ingredients. Whisk them to combine.
  • Make slurry. Combine cornstarch and water in a separate bowl until smooth. Whisk into the gravy and simmer for about 3 minutes, or until thickened.
  • Return patties to the pan. Give them a good coat in the gravy.
  • Serve!

    That Old Lipton Onion Soup Pot Roast Recipe

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

    Heat the oil in a 12-inch ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat. Add the beef and cook until well browned on all sides. Sprinkle with Onion Soup Mix. Tuck the potatoes in around the roast, turning to coat with oil. Add the carrots and celery. Pour enough water in to reach halfway up the side of the roast. Cover tightly and place in oven. Braise for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, until fork-tender, checking the liquid level about 3/4s of the way through.

    Remove beef & vegetables to a platter and cover to keep warm. Pour the juices from the skillet into a large measuring cup. Allow fat to settle on the top and skim off, adding about two tablespoons back to the skillet. Place skillet on a burner and heat to medium-high. Sprinkle flour over the fat and cook, stirring often, until the mixture starts to appear dry, about two minutes. Top off the drippings in the measuring cup with beef broth for a total of two cups, and a splash of wine, if desired. Whisking vigorously, pour the drippings into the pan. Bring to a simmer and cook until thick enough to coat the back of a spoon, leaving a distinct line when a finger is run through. Taste and adjust seasoning.

    • Heat oil in a skillet.
    • Mix flour, salt and pepper.
    • Dredge cube steaks in flour mixture fry steaks until cooked but do not overcook or will become stringy.
    • Remove steaks from pan and drain on towels cover to keep warm.
    • Drain off all of fat except for 2 tablespoons.
    • Saute onion in skillet till tender scrape up little bits of meat from pan.
    • Add flour and cook with onion till slightly brown.
    • Whisk in beef broth and cook till thick and bubbly. If not thick enough mix up a little flour/water and whisk into gravy.
    • Cut cube steaks into 1 strips and return to pan with gravy heat through and serve.

    Meanwhile, you can prepare the caramelized onion sauce. In a large pan heat olive oil and butter. When they are ready, add the onion. Stir until it starts to caramelize, 25-30 minutes. Add the honey, Bovril and ground pepper, and cook for 5 more minutes.

    Dont overwork the patties. This is the most important thing to keep in mind when making burgers.

    Mixing breaks down the proteins in the beef, pushing the juices out of the meat. The more you handle the beef, the drier the meat gets!

    The warmer your hands, the faster the proteins will break down. Wash your hands before working the beef so they stay cold.

    The best meat for burgers is ground chuck steak. For the juiciest burgers, youll want the ratio to be 80-85% lean, 15-20% fat.

    Be as careful as possible when forming the patties. This will ensure juicy burgers. Again, you dont want to overmix or mash the beef!

    Form an indent at the center of the patty using your thumb. This will prevent the burgers from puffing up.

    As the patties cook, the heat pushes the juice towards the center, causing the burger to bloat. But if they have a dent in the middle, the burgers will be flat when cooked.

    Chill the patties for 10 minutes before cooking. This will seal all the beefs juices in!

    Grill on high heat. This will give the patties that nice, crusty, seared surface.

    Do not touch the patties once theyre on the grill. Dont press them with a spatula and dont flip them over and over. Just let them sit there, covered.

    Otherwise, again, they will be tough and dry.

    To check for doneness, gently press the surface. A medium-rare burger will be slightly springy. But for more accuracy, you can use a meat thermometer to test. Heres a simple guide:
