How Lipton Onion Dip Mix Turned Me Into A Chef

Sometimes you need a break from the craziness of this modern age, which is why were celebrating nostalgic foods this week at BonAppetit.com.

I grew up just outside of Chicago, and I always knew I wanted to be a cook. The first thing I ever got to make at home, when I was around seven or eight, was popcorn. But that was mostly because it was in the air popper and it wasnt that dangerous. And I got to melt the butter on my own, which was pretty exciting.

My moms cooking was a lot of Stouffers or pork chops with seasoning that you cooked in an oven bag with water. Even now, when I go home, thats what I want. I dont want something fancy, I want pork chops in a baggie, even though I still dont understand what it is. She also made something called Goop. You take equal parts cream cheese and mayonnaise, you box-grate an onion, and then you dissolve some beef bouillon cubes into it. Its sort of like a French onion dip, but for some reason, in my family its called Goop. It was at every holiday function, every special occasion. When guests are coming over, we have the Goop.

My dad is the kind of guy who is super hands-on. Hes a carpenter, and I built a lot of things with him growing up. Theres just this same craft element to cooking, too, and I responded to that more than building cars or a shelf or dresser or cabinet. But it was the same language.

MIX. Mix together well and keep refrigerated until ready to serve.

Variations:

  • Add some spice: you can easily kick the heat up a notch by adding red chili flakes or a splash of hot sauce.
  • If youre not a fan of sour cream you can easily use plain geek yogurts, mayo or softened cream cheese. You can even mix and match to make a combination you love.

For Homemade Dried Onion Seasoning use:

  • 2 ½ tablespoons dried onion flakes
  • ¼ tsp onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon dried parsley
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Storing Homemade Onion Dip

Store your dip in an air tight container and keep it refrigerated for up to a week. It shouldn’t last beyond the first day or two as it’s that addictive!

Why does French onion dip get watery?

The dairy used as a base for the dip can get watery, especially if you have dipped chips, carrots, or celery directly into the dip container. The separation happens, if you’ve ever used sour cream after the container was opened you’ve likely seen this before. Simply stir the French onion dip before serving.

How long until French onion dip goes bad?

Technically, the dip should last for a week but it can last longer if stored properly. Use your best judgement on appearance and odor of the dip to determine if it is still good. If there is any sign of mold, discard the remaining French onion dip.

Can you freeze French onion dip?

Sour cream doesn’t freeze well, especially when used in dips like this onion dip. Freezing sour cream changes the consistency of the sour cream, so I do not recommend freezing French onion dip.

Notes About Beef Bouillon

Beef is the base for French Onion Soup, and really a necessary ingredient in this dip IMHO. Over the years, Ive tinkered with how to incorporate that beef flavor in the best way and Im done trying. Its beef bouillon paste. Some onion dips add soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce to get that flavor, but its not the same. Beef broth is ok, but its not rich enough plus, youd have to add a lot of it and then you risk the dip being too watery.

I always have Better Than Bouillon beef paste in my fridge because I use it in my Slow Cooker Pot Roast, incredible Beef Stew, Chuck wagon stew, and this dip. A little jar goes a long way! A beef bouillon cube can be used instead, BUT it gives off a much stronger, saltier taste and not my preference. NOTE: 1 beef bouillon cube crushed into a powder equals 1 1/4 teaspoons. If you go this route, I would add in 3/4 teaspoon, taste and only add in the rest if needed. And mix it really well, so the dip isnt grainy. Make one batch with the paste and once with the cube and compare!

Saving Money & Other Options For Classic Liptons Onion Soup Dip:

French Onion Soup Dip with FAGE Sour Cream

First of all, Classic Liptons Onion Soup Dip beat the pants off any store-bought dip Ive hadand was much cheaper! The mark up on a store-bought dip is incredible. Watch for sour cream on sale, usually around every holiday. Sour cream keeps for weeks and stays fresher if it is stored upside down. It might be a bit messy when its opened, but try it and see if you dont notice a huge difference in the freshness.

As far as the actual Liptons Onion Soup Mix for this dip, check for your spices and herbs in the bulk section of the store and they may very well cost less. The best part of that homemade mix is that you can control the ingredients, especially the bullion. Go for something inexpensive or if its your jam, go for high end organic, or something in between. And if you dont want to make your own Liptons Soup Mix, youre always welcome to just buy a packet.

Now, Im not going to ever imply that Classic Liptons Onion Soup Dip is an absolute match to my recipes with the slowly cooked caramelized onions, but it has a definite place in my repertoire of Onion Dips and I know Ill probably be making my Classic Liptons Onion Soup Dip a lot more often than those that take so much work and time.

The Classic, cool creamy dip!

French Onion Dip Is A Simple And Tasty Party Dip Made Using French Onion Soup Mix With Only A Handful Of Ingredients And A Few Minutes Of Prep This Will Become Your Go

French Onion Dip, or sour cream and onion dip, has always been a staple appetizer of so many picnics, parties and game days. Sometimes homemade, sometimes from a plastic tub at the store, but almost always at the party.

While I dont mind munching on the store bought variety, we all know homemade party dips are much betterand this French onion dip is so easy that it basically takes less work than going to the store for the already prepared kind!

This is a sour cream and onion dip using French onion soup mix. While you can use a store-bought packet, I highly recommend using a homemade mix. Its easy to make and keep on hand for recipes like this and usually more flavorful than a packet from the store.

The Worcestershire sauce is the secret ingredient in this French Onion Dip recipe. While I know of people who will whip this up using only the French onion soup mix and sour cream, I find that to be a little boring and by just adding a tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce. So much extra flavor is added.

This party dip literally takes 3 minutes to prepare its THAT easy! Just remember to prepare it a few hours before party time as it should refrigerate for 2-3 hours. If youre short on time, its also a great dip to put together the night before.

Kettle cooked potato chips are my go-to for party dips like this one because I love the crunch and subtle flavor but of course you can serve this French onion dip with your favorite chip.

How To Make French Onion Dip

Got 5 minutes? Thats all you need to make this dip. Simply place all the ingredients in a bowl and whisk to combine. Make sure everything is well incorporated you dont want streaks of white from the sour cream, spots of brown from the beef paste, or clumps of seasoning.

Give it a taste and adjust the flavor, if necessary. Definitely taste with a chip. Most chips are pretty salty, so youll probably want the dip less salty than you think.

Do you love French onion dip like me? Seriously, I absolutely love this easy appetizer dip even though I have a few other great methods for making my classic onion dip or French onion dip!

I still love the equally quick and easy to make version using Lipton’s onion soup mix. It’s so eighties and still tastes ALOT better than store-bought dips. But I don’t like the extra fillers.

Ingredients in store-bought mixes and ready-made dips have so many extras including preservatives and coloring that just aren’t needed. My simple homemade French onion dip has fewer ingredients and they’re ingredients that are always on hand!

Achieving The Best Tasting French Onion Dip

The dip may be slightly runny once you have blended the cream cheese with the French onion soup mix. To thicken it, I recommend placing it in the fridge for at least two hours. If it cools down too much, then the dip might go hard and will need to be warmed slightly to get to the right consistency.

Pick a French onion soup mix that you know and love as this is where all the flavor is going to come from. Picking a poor quality soup mixture might result in a dip that doesnt taste the best.

For a little bit of extra flavor, you can try mixing in some crispy bits of bacon after you have finished blending the dip. Its an amazing flavor combination that I highly recommend trying.

I really dont think Im a food snob hey, Im that person who has confessed to doing the KFC and Maccers drive through of shame. It just doesnt taste right to me, it has an edge of artificial-ness, and usually they are too salty.

This French Onion Dip is the one exception to my rule.

Its made using French Onion Soup mix. And I love it. I dont care what anyone says. And I bet my mum would love this too!
