How I Like To Caramelize Onions
While classically trained chefs my poo-poo my method, I feel it is easy, accessible, and fool-proof. Sure I cheat by adding a little sugar. I can live with that!
To make the onions start with a hot pan of butter or oil . Next add the sliced onions- I like to cut them in half, then into thin slices. Once the onions are in the pan with the hot oil or butter, season them with salt and fresh ground black pepper, and toss them to coat.
After the onions have cooked down a few minutes and begin to brown slightly and release some of their liquid- I go ahead and cheat my a** off and throw some good old granulated sugar in the pan. Toss this to coat- and the onions are off to the races as the sugar accelerates the browning process. Now its just a matter of occasional stirring, and deglazing for about 20 minutes before they are ready to go! I like to keep a cup of white wine close to the stove and add in about 2-3 tablespoons at a time, deglazing over the full 20 minutes as the liquid evaporates. Once the wine is gone, the onions are done! Caramel magic.

It might be a bit messy when its opened, but try it and see if you dont notice a huge difference in the freshness.
As far as the actual Liptons Onion Soup Mix for this dip, check for your spices and herbs in the bulk section of the store and they may very well cost less. The best part of that homemade mix is that you can control the ingredients, especially the bullion. Go for something inexpensive or if its your jam, go for high end organic, or something in between. And if you dont want to make your own Liptons Soup Mix, youre always welcome to just buy a packet.
Now, Im not going to ever imply that Classic Liptons Onion Soup Dip is an absolute match to my recipes with the slowly cooked caramelized onions, but it has a definite place in my repertoire of Onion Dips and I know Ill probably be making my Classic Liptons Onion Soup Dip a lot more often than those that take so much work and time.

- Add some spice: you can easily kick the heat up a notch by adding red chili flakes or a splash of hot sauce.
- If youre not a fan of sour cream you can easily use plain geek yogurts, mayo or softened cream cheese. You can even mix and match to make a combination you love.

- 2 ½ tablespoons dried onion flakes
- ¼ tsp onion powder
- ¼ teaspoon dried parsley

Assembling And Baking The Dip
Once your onions are ready, the dip comes together in a flash. All you need to do is stir together a few ingredients, add the onions and get ready to bake! To make the dip, you will need:
- Those delicious, freshly made caramelized onions.
- 2 bricks of cream cheese, softened. Leave it on the counter for an hour or so before youre ready to make the dip. Mixing firm cream cheese is HARD and makes for mixed results, with not so mixed ingredients. Plan ahead and let those bricks chill on the counter and get nice and pliable.
- A cup of sour cream, for tang and even more richness.
- A bit of dry or fresh thyme, to give the dip that classic soup flavor.
- A bit of Worcestershire sauce, for umami goodness.
- Gated Parmesan cheese, for salty, cheesy bite.
- Shredded sharp cheddar cheese, to top the dip and make it extra bubbly, crisp and gooey.
To bake the dip, simply stir together all the ingredients above , and transfer to either 1 greased 8×8 glass or ceramic baking dish, or 2 large oven-safe soup crocks. I like to serve the dip in 2 crocks, because its super cute- and because it is French Onion Soup Dip, after all. If you are taking this to go- it could also be prepared in a foil pan.
Once the dip is in your baking vessel of choice, top it with the cheddar cheese and transfer it to a 350 degree oven for 30-35 minutes, until the cheese is browned and bubbly. Then resist the urge to dig in for about 10-15 minutes.

Party season is upon us so its super handy to have an arsenal of quick party food that you can whip up no matter how busy you are.
And while I always prefer cooking from scratch when I can. Some of my favorite easy dips are olive tapenade and hot onion dip made entirely from scratch, youre missing out there are many times when I simply dont have time to make it from scratch.
And this French Onion Dip made with French Onion Soup Mix has saved me many times. MANY times!
Even though its made using a French Onion Soup Mix, my twisted logic tells me that because I didnt buy it in a tub from the store, it is semi home-made.
And I can absolutely promise you, it is BETTER than store bought because its creamier. So many French Onion Dips sold at stores are rock hard when cold so the chips break when you try to scoop up dip. This French Onion Dip is soft even straight from the fridge no more broken chips!
There are versions of this made with just sour cream and French Onion Soup Mix. But I really feel that the addition of mayonnaise makes a huge difference adds richness and more layers of flavor.
Give this a try! I promise you will LOVE it. Seriously tastes just like store bought!

Throwback from the 80s! All you need is French Onion Soup mix, sour cream and mayonnaise to make this utterly addictive French Onion Dip that is way better than store bought dip. This is the ONLY recipe I make using a store bought packet mix a testament to how good it is!
I really dont think Im a food snob hey, Im that person who has confessed to doing the KFC and Maccers drive through of shame. But I was brought up with food made from scratch and my mother ended up doing a great job of brain washing me because I never use store bought packet mixes or recipe bases. It just doesnt taste right to me, it has an edge of artificial-ness, and usually they are too salty.
This French Onion Dip is the one exception to my rule.
Its made using French Onion Soup mix. And I love it. I dont care what anyone says. And I bet my mum would love this too!
Even though it starts with a packet soup mix, this is still way better than French Onion Dip bought in a tub. For one thing, its really soft French Onion Dip sold in tubs are usually quick thick unless left out to soften. And it tastes less artificial than store bought dip. I think the sour cream goes a long way to add an element of freshness to this dip.
