How To Store This Dip

How long does French Onion Dip last? Its delicious the same day its made and even better the next. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will keep up to 5 days without any flavor loss, but will loosen a bit as the days go on, so give it a quick stir before serving again. Can you freeze French Onion Dip? No, sorry. Once thawed, the sour cream separates and becomes grainy and unappetizing.

Homemade Dry French Onion Dip Mix

Ill admit it. I actually like the Lipton onion mix stuff. You know, the stuff in the envelope that can be used to make soup or dip? Ive never used it to make soup but as a dip it tastes pretty good. Tear open the envelope, pour the contents into a bowl of sour cream, stir, refrigerate for 30 minutes, pull out a bag of your favorite potato chips, sit back and *crunch, munch, crunch.*

BUT you know how it is with most pre-prepared food items. The list of ingredients always includes strange things that really just dont belong there. So if you can make the same thing without all the junk that tastes just as good or better, plus is way cheaper to make yourself, why wouldnt you make it, right? Right!

Heres a copycat recipe version of the dry French onion dip mix you can throw together in 2 minutes and youll love the results.

And it also makes a cute little gift idea.

Its as simple as combining a few dry ingredients together and then mixing it in with the sour cream. It only takes a couple of minutes to put together, but you can also make a few dried dip mixes in advance to have on hand when you need them. This recipe is the equivalent of one envelope of dried onion soup mix.

Lets get started!

Combine everything but the sour cream in a small bowl. I use msg-free beef broth granules.

Add the dip mix to the sour cream in a medium-sized bowl.

Stir to thoroughly combine and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, preferably an hour, before using.

Why This Garlic Dip Is Even Better Than Onion Dip

Still, its a long way off from what Critz called the number one brand in that space and America’s favorite by far. In fact, Liptons Classic Onion Dip doesnt need to do much, if any, marketing.

I think the main arguments about why this rose to popularity would be political and social, explains Adrienne Bitar, postdoctoral associate in history at Cornell University and author of Diet and the Disease of Civilization. Following WWII, in an effort to expand civilian consumption of dehydrated foods , the government discovered a real winner. Consumers were much more eager to embrace dehydrated soups than they were other dehydrated products.

Coincidingly, as Bitar points out, the rise of the middle class and the idea that you would have an elite dip that you would show off to your friends at nice dinner parties in Levittown just kind of fits in with the larger story.

How To Make French Onion Dip

Got 5 minutes? Thats all you need to make this dip. Simply place all the ingredients in a bowl and whisk to combine. Make sure everything is well incorporated you dont want streaks of white from the sour cream, spots of brown from the beef paste, or clumps of seasoning.

Give it a taste and adjust the flavor, if necessary. Definitely taste with a chip. Most chips are pretty salty, so youll probably want the dip less salty than you think.

Making Classic Liptons Onion Soup Dip:

Lipton soup mix dip with garlic

So there is nothing to making your Classic Liptons Onion Soup Dip. Just mix it up, taste it and make sure you put just the right amount of the mix in the sour cream for your tastes and let it sit for a while. Preferably about an hour or so in the fridge if you can stand to wait. That softens up those onion flakes a bit and melds all those flavors together.

Do you live in one of those areas of the country where the only sour cream you can buy is the thinner sort? That used to be the case here in Minnesota, so I dont know if thats a thing where you live. If it is or if you dont want to shell out the big bucks for a premium brand of sour cream, line a strainer with a paper towel or cheesecloth and strain it in the fridge for an hour or more until the consistency of your sour cream is nice and thick.

I really dont think Im a food snob hey, Im that person who has confessed to doing the KFC and Maccers drive through of shame. Its made using French Onion Soup mix. And I love it. I dont care what anyone says. And I bet my mum would love this too!

Ive really gotten into making my own homemade seasonings lately. I find that its so much cheaper in the long run than buying these tiny little containers of mixed spices. Youre making a larger quantity that will take you longer to use up.

Plus I like the fact that I know exactly whats going in my seasoning, there are no hidden ingredients that you need to question.

Onion Soup Mix Dip From Scratch

This Onion Soup Mix Dip from Scratch is the bomb. Just like I remember that dip from way back when I was a kid. That stuff was super yummy. But, it used to have beef in it, so this vegetarian gave up eating it.

I dont know if it still has beef in it or not, but it definitely has some preservatives, and as I learned recently it isnt available everywhere, so its great to be able to mix up your own Homemade Onion Soup Mix.

Vegan Sour Cream And Onion Dip

I am not a vegan but I am lactose intolerant and a lifelong onion dip lover. When I asked one of my vegan friends whether they had any good vegan sour cream and onion dip recipes, they told me that sadly, none were as good as the OG Liptons Onion Soup Mix and a container of sour cream. For the uninitiated, classic sour cream and onion dip is just a pint of any full-fat sour cream mixed with one packet of Liptons French Onion Soup mix. Sometimes chives if you are fancy. My sister had tried every type of vegan sour cream on the market paired with the soup mix and they were all missing something. Some were just too sweet or coconut-y to be reminiscent of the original recipes taste.

So, being me, I could not rest until I had achieved a SC+O dip SO GOOD that it would bring a tear to your eye and make you ask the maker at least 5 times if they are SURE there is in this recipe. I first debuted this dip at an all-girls camping trip where half the attendees were vegan. This dip was a HUGE hit. The vegans were desperately making sure this was absolutely, 100% vegan , and the non-vegans could not believe that they actually liked something vegan.

Is Onion Soup Mix Low Carb/keto

You can use onion soup mix when cooking if you are on a low carb or Keto diet, just make sure not to go overboard and use too much.

It has 3.4 NET Carbs per tablespoon to be exact. But dont be too alarmed because when you add it to your recipes you are probably only going to add a few tablespoons. And then when you divide that up in your whole recipe you really arent adding in many extra net carbs.

    Super Natural Simple: Whole

She calls the mix French Onion Salt and deploys it first in a dead-simple breakfast strata recipe. Then she suggests sprinkling the mix over milk-washed biscuits before baking, or using it to top off a roasted sweet potato. I recently added about 1 tablespoon of the mix to the dough for savory hand pies that I then took along on a camping trip. Delicious.

Swansons recipe isnt an exact dupe for Lipton, but ½ cup of her French Onion Salt can be used as a substitute for a 1-ounce packet of dehydrated French onion soup mix. I made batches of dip with each to compare, purely for editorial reasons. Sour cream dip made with Lipton’s mix had richer, darker flavor. The one made with Swansons mix was brighter, and somehow more elegant. If Liptons dip was a robust winter onion, Swansons was a lithe spring onion. I could eat a whole batch of either in a single sitting. If you want to make a version with Swansons homemade mix thats closer to the Lipton standard, add a few dashes of Worcestershire or soy sauce when stirring everything together .

Or, if you want to go your own way, Swanson also suggests swapping out the dried chives for any other dried herb you love. Go thyme for an even more French feel or dried mint for something a little more zingy. Dill? Cilantro? Besobela? Really, whatever you like.

    Notes About Beef Bouillon

French Onion Soup Dip with FAGE Sour Cream

Beef is the base for French Onion Soup, and really a necessary ingredient in this dip IMHO. Over the years, Ive tinkered with how to incorporate that beef flavor in the best way and Im done trying. Its beef bouillon paste. Some onion dips add soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce to get that flavor, but its not the same. Beef broth is ok, but its not rich enough plus, youd have to add a lot of it and then you risk the dip being too watery.

I always have Better Than Bouillon beef paste in my fridge because I use it in my Slow Cooker Pot Roast, incredible Beef Stew, Chuck wagon stew, and this dip. A little jar goes a long way! A beef bouillon cube can be used instead, BUT it gives off a much stronger, saltier taste and not my preference. NOTE: 1 beef bouillon cube crushed into a powder equals 1 1/4 teaspoons. If you go this route, I would add in 3/4 teaspoon, taste and only add in the rest if needed. And mix it really well, so the dip isnt grainy. Make one batch with the paste and once with the cube and compare!

To make soup the general proportion is one cup of hot water to 1 ½ teaspoons of this Onion Soup and Dip Mix. Mix and allow to sit so that the ingredients dissolve and rehydrate. You can, of course, add more or less to suit your tastes.

To make onion dip combine about half of this recipe in a pint of sour cream and stir to combine. Again add more or less to suit you tastes.
