Low-calorie diets that are used under the supervision of a physician are typically designed to be nutritionally adequate .

However, the food choices of the Cabbage Soup Diet are very limited and unbalanced. The diet includes almost no protein and is also very low in carbs, fat and calories. Additionally, its deficient in many vitamins and minerals.

There is not a serious risk of vitamin and mineral deficiencies if you only follow the diet for one week, especially if you decide to take a multivitamin. But this doesnt make up for the diets lack of calories and protein.

Consequently, many people on the Cabbage Soup Diet complain of dizziness, weakness and lightheadedness while on the diet.

Day Cabbage Diet Plan

Day One:

Fruit Day: On your first day you can eat as much fruit as youd like . When you dont feel like any more fruit but youre hungry, have your soup. Only fruit and soup today.

Day Two:

Vegetable Day: Today you can eat as many vegetables as you can handle, and they may be raw or steamed. You should really try and avoid peas, corn and beans but eat a lot of leafy greens. So today have as much soup and veggies as you want. And for dinner you may chow down on a big, baked potato with oil, or butter if that’s your thing.

Day Three:

Day 1 and Day 2 combo: Today youre basically going to eat all the fruit and vegetables and soup you want, but no potato at dinner.

Day Four:

You Can Finally Eat Bananas Day: Todays a fun day because you can eat AS MANY BANANAS as you want today. You can also have as many glasses of skim milk as youd like. And of course throughout the day eat as much soup as you want.

Day Five:

Get Your Protein And Tomatoes On: Today the diet calls for a piece of beef or chicken that is 10 to 20 ounces. You can substitute with anything high protein, as long as it’s not too starchy or sugary. You can also up to six fresh tomatoes. Putting ketchup on your beef does not count for fresh tomatoes. Its also very important today that you drink 6 to 8 glasses of water to eliminate the uric acid from your body. Your soup should be eaten as often as youd like.

Touted Health Benefits Of The Cabbage Soup Diet

Although there is no scientific evidence that suggests the cabbage soup diet is safe and effective for weight loss, eating cabbage soup alone as part of a balanced diet may be beneficial.

For example, a preliminary study on the effects of red cabbage consumption in obese mice found decreased cholesterol over the course of eight weeks. The study was published in December 2016 in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, though its unclear whether the same results would be found in humans and in a randomized controlled clinical trial the gold standard for medical research.

I NEVER thought Id like this cabbage soup, but its so good!

So You Say Youd Like To Make Some Substitutions

The key to being successful with the Cabbage Soup Diet is to really not stray from the recipe or weekly meal plan. Having said that, there are a few substitutions you may experiment with if you get bored or dont like another particular food item.

A number of other high fiber vegetables may be added to the soup for a bit more flavor, as long as they are lower in calories. For instance, adding corn or carrots would not be a good substitution because they are both sugary vegetables with too many calories.

Veggies like zuchinni, spinach, and kale are acceptable substitutes. You may even add one can of black beans to the pot for a bit of added flavor, texture and protein. To change up the flavor, stick to herbs and seasonings like cayenne, curry powder or bay leaves.

Pros And Cons Of The Cabbage Soup Diet

Dietitian Jasmine Carbon points out cabbages nutritional benefits:

Cabbage is a great source of fibre essential for gut flora and bowel health, she says. Eating a portion of cabbage would count towards your 5 portions of fruit and veg a day.

However, it should be eaten as part of a balanced diet. This is not a diet I would recommend anyone to follow, she adds.

Jasmine is concerned with how restrictive the cabbage soup diet plan is, which in turn could affect your body both physically and mentally:

If done for a number of days the person could miss out on vital calories, protein, vitamins and minerals essential for the body to function and to allow you to carry out your day-to-day tasks.

Mina agrees that the diets focus can wreak havoc with your blood sugar levels. Leaving individuals feeling faint or weak and is particularly dangerous for those with diabetes.

The cabbage soup diet also has a reputation for leaving you full of wind . This is because cabbage is high in fibre and can cause some digestive issues for those who arent used to consuming high quantities of fibre.

Expect to experience some gastro-intestinal discomfort such as bloating, gas build up, nausea and flatulence, adds Jasmine. Diarrhoea is another common side-effect of the cabbage soup diet plan.

Whilst weight loss can be expected , its worth noting that those who follow the cabbage soup diet will put the weight back on when they come off it.
