United States And Canada

In the United States and Canada, chicken soup often has noodles or rice in it, thus giving it its common name of “chicken noodle soup“. The term may have been coined in a commercial for the Campbell Soup Company in the 1930s. The original 21 varieties of Campbell’s condensed soup featured a “chicken soup with noodles”, but when it was advertised on the Amos ‘n’ Andyradio show in the 1930s by a slip of the tongue the soup was referred to as “chicken noodle soup”. Traditionally, American chicken soup was prepared using old hens too tough and stringy to be roasted or cooked for a short time. In modern times, these fowl are difficult to come by, and broiler chickens are often used to make soup.

Canned chicken soup

Often sold as a condensed soup, canned chicken soup such as Campbell‘s Chicken Noodle Soup, is notable for its high sodium content: 890 mg per 1â2 cup serving. This gives a 1+1â2 cup bowl of soup about 2,500 mg of sodium, a full day’s allowance in the case of this mainstream brand. Other condensed chicken soups produced by Campbell’s, such as Chicken with Rice or Chicken & Stars Soup, have similar amounts, as do generic versions of the product.

Usually, the main ingredients of this canned soup are:

  • Chicken Broth

Easy chicken soup | simple ingredients

Im lucky to have wonderful childhood memories of the chicken soup made by both of my Jewish grandmothers. Once I got old enough to cook for a living and travel a bit, I realized that lots of other people think of chicken soup just as fondly, since it holds a beloved place in almost every cuisine. Its flavors and ingredients might vary, but its standing as the most comforting of meals is universal.

The great thing about chicken soup is that once you learn the basic method, you can flavor it however you like. It starts with an easy, homemade brothjust throw a chicken and some vegetables into a pot and let them simmer. Once the chicken is cooked, remove it, shred the meat, and return it to the soup later. Then, its simply a matter of adding your own favorite ingredients, from spices, fresh herbs, and vegetables to noodles, grains, and beans.

You can go traditional with classic chicken noodle, or branch out to Tex-Mex chile-lime chicken soup, or Asian chicken noodle soup with bok choy and shiitake. Or invent your own version. No matter what flavors you choose, your soup will make a delicious one-pot meal for a chilly winter night. And just thinkit might even create delicious memories for the soup-eaters in your family, too.

How To Freeze Leftover Chicken Soup

To freeze, allow your soup to cool at room temperature before transferring to the refrigerator to cool completely. Next, transfer to freezer-friendly containers or double-bag in freezer-friendly zip-lock bags. Remove most of the air, leaving just a small amount of space to allow the liquid to expand as it freezes.

  • To reheat, allow the soup to thaw in the fridge overnight, then transfer to a pot and cook until heated through.
  • Keep frozen for up to 6-8 months.

But what about if you dont plan to freeze the leftovers? Enjoy within 5 days, thoroughly reheating each time.

This soup is as easy as 1, 2, 3, and while it takes a bit of time, most of the time is hands off while it simmers away!

    Healthy Vegetable Chicken Soup

When I say that Ive been on a month long eating bender Im not exaggerating. I literally ate my way through New York, the Betty Crocker Kitchens, and Arizona.

Double breakfasts, six dinners, buffet dessert. No calorie left behind, no restaurant untouched.

Let me let you in on a little secret. You know all those food bloggers that post obscene food pictures from restaurants and bakeries?

The truth is that they rarely eat all of it, if even a bite. Ive witnessed this many times to verify that is the case.

I know, I knowas a food blogger you have to have discretion otherwise you would be 500 lbs .

I havent quite learned that discretion part.

You remember on Instagram how I posted an ice cream cone entirely filled with cookie dough in NYC?

Whats not pictured are the 12 other containers of cookie dough that we took back to our hotel and ate later that night and for breakfast the next morning.

So I guess Im the nonconformist in the food blogging world. A whole lot of fun but horrible on the waistline.

Which is why todays soup has ALL the veggies in it. Around 8-10 cups of veggies. While we were in Arizona I told the kids when we got home were having a grill-off for a month because we had eaten so much garbage.

Yep, chicken and veggies, fish and veggies on repeat. But somehow they got sick of it and so this soup which is still healthy came about.

Just be warned that if you do store the leftovers, the noodles will soak up the liquid and you may have to add more broth.

Do You Cook The Chicken Before Putting It In The Soup

You dont need to cook the chicken before putting it in the soup. Put the raw chicken in the simmering broth and let it cook at a low simmer until it shreds apart easily with two forks.

Simmer covered for 20 minutes, more or less depending on size.

Use two forks and pull apart the chicken. Taste and adjust the broth. Squeeze with lemon to taste.

Add chili flakes if you want, a drizzle of sesame oil is nice, some scallions or fresh herbs, then serve it up!

Looking for something a little heartier than your usual chicken noodle soup? Instead of the long noodles most of us are used to, this recipe calls for gnocchi as the pasta for more heartiness and a fantastic flavor and texture.

What Type Of Chicken Is Used For Soup

Best Chicken Noodle Soup From Scratch With A Whole Chicken
    • Chicken breasts, skinless
    • Chicken thighs, skinless
    • Boneless chicken is faster to cook and easiest to handle, but yes, you can use bone-in chicken, just remove the skin for a lighter leaner broth.

If adding rice or quinoa, you could add directly to the pot of simmering broth, only adding about 1/2 cup.

Same with canned beans- just add one can.

I prefer to keep my rice or noodles separate, to prevent the soup from getting cloudy, but do as you like.
