How Many Carbs In Egg Drop Soup

2 Ingredient Keto Egg Drop Soup

The core ingredients in low carb egg drop soup are chicken broth, eggs, sesame oil, a sprinkle of green onions, and a seasoning like soy/gluten free soy , or coconut aminos.

If youre wondering how many carbs in egg drop soup, there are ONLY 0.6 net carbs per serving depending on what brands of ingredients youre using! Yep.you got that right, the egg drop soup carbs are less than 1 net carb per cup!

Chicken broth, eggs, and sesame oil all have NO carbs. Making sure to use either Tamari sauce or coconut aminos instead of regular soy sauce will make this an almost no carb soup recipe. Who knew you could make a filling soup with so little carbs.

We used the San-J brand Tamari found at most grocery stores that is gluten-free and sugar-free, it has just 1 carb per Tbsp.which means the soup only has 0.25 carbs per serving before adding a sprinkle of green onion.

And then the optional green onions have a total of 1.5 net carbs for 2 of them, which is an easy thing to cut back on. And even making the recipe as stated with green onions or scallions only adds 0.35 net carbs to each serving.

My mind was blown when I realized the total egg drop soup carbs are only 0.6 per cup of soup!

How To Make Thick Egg Drop Soup

If you prefer a thicker egg drop soup add a bit of Xanthan Gum. It will help to give the chicken broth more viscosity without any corn starch or flour. Keto friendly recipes do not contain corn starch because per serving there are 7 grams of carbs, and 6.9 grams of net carbs. That is why traditional egg drop soup isnt always keto.

Making Instant Pot Egg Drop Soup

If you prefer to use an Instant Pot for cooking soup, this recipe for egg drop soup without cornstarch works for that too. Here are the modifications you need:

  • Start by pressure cooking the broth and chopped ginger for 2-3 minutes.
  • Switch to the Sauté setting on High or More heat for the rest of the recipe

The reality is that it may take longer to make the soup in your pressure cooker or instant pot than making it on a stovetop . However, it can definitely be done if you want to make egg drop soup in your Instant Pot instead!

Gluten Free Egg Drop Soup

Traditional egg drop soup uses soy sauce for the salty umami flavor. Soy sauce is not keto because it has both soy and wheat which can be inflammatory on a keto diet. In order to combat this but still have a traditional flavor we chose to use coconut aminos. Coconut aminos are a low carb gluten free option for those who want a soy sauce replacement. It is not sugar free, but is lower in carbs and works well in keto recipes. If you prefer a less sweet soy sauce replacement you can try tamari which is packed with salty flavor and is 100% gluten free. While wheat free, it does still contain soy. Weigh out your options and pick whichever flavor and ingredients you prefer.

Is Egg Drop Soup Keto

Zero

This version is definitely keto-friendly. One serving provides 2.5g of total carbs and a whopping 22.5g total fat. I also love the fact that it has 18.8g of protein which makes it a great food for individuals who are looking to build muscle and boost weight loss through satiety.

Did you know that egg drop soup is a staple at many Chinese restaurants? The difference between those versions and that one we have here is the ingredients list. Typical egg drop soup carbs are high since the soup uses non-keto-friendly items like cornstarch and corn kernel. We need to eliminate them if we want to keep our carb intake down.

The rest of the ingredients are acceptable on a keto diet, such as chicken broth, bouillon cube, butter, garlic paste, and eggs.

Now that you know the carbs in egg drop soup , lets dive into the actual process of making it. Read on.

How To Make This Easy Keto Egg Drop Soup

With a total prep and cooking time of 20 minutes, our egg drop soup is actually one of the simplest meals thats super gentle on your scale. It doesnt matter if youre eating it to break a fast or you havent bought any meat yet .

For the ingredients, I use the following:

  • Chicken broth
  • Butter or bacon fat
  • Chili garlic paste
  • Medium eggs

To get started, the first thing you need to do is prepare the chicken broth and bouillon cube. If you prefer not to use homemade chicken broth, which can take time to make, you can simply dissolve a chicken broth cube in hot water. Its the same thing you do with the bouillon cube. Set them aside for now.

Next, heat a sauce pan and pour the chicken broth and chicken bouillon cube youve set aside. Heres what Ive discovered: One time, I didnt have the bouillon cube so I stuck with chicken broth instead. And the taste of the soup was completely fine! So dont worry if you dont have one of the cubes. Next, add the butter to the pan.

Bring the liquid to a boil and simmer for about 5 minutes. Now, its time to add a bit of chili garlic paste. This imparts hints of red in your soup and more importantly, gives it a kick. It makes egg drop soup more flavorful.

Finally, add in the medium eggs. Stir well. These eggs will make your meal more filling and nourishing. Eggs are an excellent source of protein and minerals such as zinc and iron. Cook for 3 minutes.

Transfer your soup to a bowl. Sprinkle with chopped chives on top and serve!

Our Top Tips For Making The Tastiest Keto Soups

Making your own soups from scratch is a great opportunity to flex your creative keto muscles.

You can easily customize most keto soup recipes by either adding or subtracting ingredients in order to come up with your own out of this world soup flavorings. With that in mind, here are some of my top tips for making the tastiest keto soups:

  • Experiment with different types of broth. Chicken broth offers a much different soup flavor than beef or vegetable broth would.
  • Experiment with using both fresh and dried herbs. Fresh herbs obviously work great for garnishment but dont sleep on how savory your soups can end up with even just a little bit of dried herb seasoning added.
  • Dont be afraid to take constant taste tests! As your soup is cooking, you should be constantly tasting it and adjusting seasoning amounts as necessary.

What Makes This Keto Egg Drop Soup Different

While most traditional egg drop soup recipes contain cornstarch or regular white flour as a thickening agent, this recipe does no such thing. You will find that egg drop soup gets most of its flavor and texture from the beaten eggs, not by adding flour or starch to the mixture.

If, however, you feel as though you need to thicken your soup, you can do so using a low-carb, gluten-free thickening agent like xanthan gum. This will allow you to enjoy a thick, creamy soup, without worrying about whether youll be kicked out of ketosis.
